FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
Just a heads up that the FSTA Trade Conference will be held at the Bellagio Las Vegas on Thursday and Friday of this week, with the FSTA Industry Draft on Thursday at 7 pm ET. It will be broadcast live on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio and we'll have a team in this one. It's a 13-team league (yes, 13 teams, mixed league draft) over 29 rounds. Tom and I finished 5th last year, but we're hoping for a better finish this year.
Tonight they are picking the draft order, using KDS live when you are selected. That airs at 8:15 pm ET on the Fantasy Drive. Tune in and see what pick we get. I'm not even sure which one I want.
It's a good group of owners. Here's the list:
2015 SiriusXm/FSTA Fantasy Baseball League participamts
1- Steve Gardner, USA Today Sports
2-Jeff Mans, Fantasy Alarm
3-Glenn Colton, Colton & The Wolfman, defending champs
4-Mark Bloom, Scout Fantasy
5-Anthony Perri, Fantistics Fantasy Sports
6-Ray Flowers, SiriusXM Fantasy Radio
7-Greg Ambrosius, Stats/NFBC
8-Charlie Wiegert, CDM Sports
9- Jeff Paur, RT Sports
10-Chris Liss, RotoWire
11-Ron Shandler, Baseball HQ
12-Todd Zola, Mastersball
13- Nando Di Fino, RotoXperts
STATS Fantasy Advantage is on the air on Wednesday at 10 pm ET and then we're on the air live from the Trade Conference from 1-2 pm ET on Friday to talk about the draft the night before. Should be good fun.

Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
I was randomly pulled 10th in the draft order for Thursday's FSTA Industry Draft and I got the 6th pick. Not a bad deal. I kind of like the 6th pick. Here's a look at the draft order for this week's 13-team draft:
FSTA Industry Draft
13 Teams, 29 Rounds
Thursday, Jan. 15th at 7 pm ET on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio
Draft Order:
1. Steve Gardner, USA Today
2. Rick Wolf/Glenn Colton, Fantasy Alarm
3. Ron Shandler, USA Today/BaseballHQ
4. Charlie Wiegert, CDM Fantasy Sports
5. Anthony Perri, Fantistics.com
6. Greg Ambrosius, NFBC
7. Todd Zola, Mastersball.com
8. Mark Bloom, Dr. Roto/Scout
9. Chris Liss, Rotowire.com
10. Tony Paur, RT Sports
11. Jeff Mans, Fantasy Alarm
12. Ray Flowers, Fantasy Alarm/SiriusXM Fantasy Sports
13. Nando di Fino, RotoExperts.com
This is a group that usually stays away from Starting Pitchers, but we'll see if that trend continues. Should be a lot of fun.
Okay, let's see the predictions on who will be available at #6 for me in the 1st Round and then again in the 2nd Round. I'm seeking the NFBC's advice to start out. Thanks all.

Do you think Fantistics takes Kershaw? He's the only one who would. That leaves me with a gimpy Miggy or Abreu then. Sorry, I can't take the hometown centerfielder there, or do I?ToddZ wrote:1. Trout

Anthony has a history of taking pitchers early, it's part of what his site preaches but of course nothing is a sure thing.
Miggy will be interesting. If you take Gomez, we'll probably take a 1B, but not the one you think. Check out Peter's mag, I pan Abreu. We'll look at Miggy and .....

Some decent meat cornermen coming later (though obviously not in the Miggy or Abreu class). Want balance? Gomez (though don't be surprised if Shandler doesn't pick according to script and grab him).
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I"m expecting a Ron surprise at 5. I don't think he goes according to ADPs, but you never know. Gomez does provide an interesting start if he can continue to keep that batting average up. Interesting thought.Edwards Kings wrote:Some decent meat cornermen coming later (though obviously not in the Miggy or Abreu class). Want balance? Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
The lineup around Abreu is much improved this year. His walk rate nearly doubled in the second half last year because teams stopped throwing him strikes.
Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
Funny, isn't it?
We have become so oriented with numbers that we think everything must be put in categories.
Abreu drew more walks over the second half. We know this because of splits and his game logs.
There is no category for a batter like Abreu being pitched around, by a pitcher.
So drawing a walk, while being pitched around, makes Abreu a better on base player.
For fantasy, he becomes a worse player because pitchers are making fewer mistakes with him. Preferring to miss with a ball, rather than a strike.
Scherzer, the pitcher that avoided him twice in one game, walks four.
Numbers only folks will say that the four walks were an anomoly. Scherzer is demerited for being a smart pitcher.
There IS a category for Scherzer's walks. There is NO category for what could have happened had Scherzer been more aggressive with Abreu.
We can't categorize, 'smart'. Football coaches avoid good punt and kick returners by not allowing them a chance.
That, is considered smart.
Scherzer walks Abreu.
It is considered smart.
But, his numbers take a beating.
His k/bb ratio is hindered.
His bb/9 is hindered.
His total walks is hindered.
And even if Abreu scores one of four times, it is a certainty that an announcer somewhere will tell us how walks kill pitchers.
Someimes, even though there is no category for it, a pitcher uses a walk as a weapon.
Even though most will see it as a fault.

Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
thought I would see some comments from Greg this morning but he may be involved in FSTA meetings
But one observation - this had better be a trading league or the excess stolen bases will be a waste.

Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
It's a trading league. We have speed that others would love to have. We lack in power, which we need to address. I probably shouldn't have gone for the one-trick pony so early, but couldn't resist!!Captain Hook wrote:thought I would see some comments from Greg this morning but he may be involved in FSTA meetings

I'm on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio at 1 pm ET to discuss the league and my team. I'll try to post later, but it's a busy day of meetings. Be patient with me.

Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
Okay, now for an honest assessment of my team: I SCREWED UP!!!
I admit that I tried to get too cute on a couple of picks when I should have just gone down the safe route. It was an interesting atmosphere because there were 400 people in this room and nobody could hear the picks and nobody could really see the draft board. It was tough to keep track of picks. The reason the draft took so long is because the facilitator had to walk down to each group of owners and shout out who was just picked. And this went on for almost 400 picks.
But I blame myself for some picks on the offensive end that I wish I hadn't made. I have no problem with my pitching staff and think I can contend there, but I'm short on power on the offensive end and I have some guys who really need to come through to justify where I drafted them. The good news is that this is a trading league and I may have speed to deal later in the season.
Okay, here's my thoughts:
1.6 Giancarlo Stanton: With power at a premium, I was happy he fell to me at the 6th spot. If Ron Shandler had taken Stanton over Abreu, I would have taken the gimpy Miguel Cabrera at 6. He fell to 9th, which was a bargain, but I'll take the 40+ homer potential of Stanton as the foundation of my team.
2.8 (21st pick) Chris Sale: Remember this is a 13-team league (don't ask why), so when I saw Chris Sale still available I jumped at him. I had planned on taking Kershaw in Round 1 or an SP in Round 3, so this was good value. He should get more Wins this year and if he can duplicate the rest of the numbers my team will have its ace.
3.6 Dee Gordon: Here's where I went wrong. Jacoby Ellsbury fell to me and I had my eyes on him the whole way. He would have been a perfect fit with the power and speed combination, but I targeted speed after the Stanton pick and didn't think Ellsbury would be there and took Gordon. I wish I had this one back, that's for sure. I know I didn't want to start with two Outfielders, but I let the Coronas talk me into this one.
4.8 Victor Martinez: I wanted to keep a close eye on Batting Average in this league with a target of .268 in BA for this format. Martinez provides power and a great BA, but I know he's old and I was targeting young players. But he fit the start and now I had a good start to my infield.
5.6 Nolan Arendado: Here I had my choice of Kyle Seager or Arenado and I went with the younger guy in a hitter's park. I jumped him a few picks, but I knew neither guy was coming back to me. Some folks think it was too early and that I should have taken Seager out of the two, but we'll see. I'm not thrilled with it, but I do like his upside.
6.8 Sonny Gray: I was thrilled to get him as my second SP. There was a run on Closers in this round, but in a 13-team league I never even considered one of the closers. I'm happy with Gray as my SP2.
7.6 Mookie Betts: Okay, so I drank the Bill James Kool-Aid as he has Betts projected for a season of .321 BA, 15 home runs and 40 SBs. I admit I fell in love with those numbers and believed them. I do believe he starts in RF and hits at the top of the lineup. I've been roasted for taking him so high, but I believe in the talent. He better come through to make me look good (well, that's impossible, but you know what I mean).
8.8 Yan Gomes: I took him as the 6th Catcher and was choosing between Gomes and Brian McCann. I just liked his upside and BA better than McCann's. Nothing sexy here, but he filled a hole.
9.6 Hisashi Iwakuma: I think he fell too far in this draft as his ADP in the NFBC is 101. I still needed offense, but as my third SP I felt like I was starting to build a solid staff.
10.8 Steve Cishek: Got my first closer and I'm in the game now for Saves.
11.6 Rusney Castillo: Again, someone who seemed to fall to me as his NFBC ADP is 116. This is pick 138 and his upside was too good to ignore. If he goes 15-20 and hits above .280 he will be a solid outfielder for me.
12.8 Jean Segura: I didn't like this pick, but I had several guys tell me they wanted Segura. Some people expect a bounceback year and I hope it happens, but he looked bad for a full season last year. He deserved that .244 average. Still, he had a lot of personal issues last year and he didn't adjust to the pitchers' adjustments last year. He will be better, but I'm not expecting numbers like we saw in 2013.
13.6 Michael Wacha: Seemed like good value at the time. Time for a bounce back season from Wacha.
14.8 Matt Adams: I could see I was lacking in power and went with the softball hitter. Even if he hits mainly against RHPs, I think 20-25 HRs is possible, which is what I needed at this time.
15.6 Hector Rondon: Here's my second Closer and on a team that should be much improved. Good bargain at this price.
16.8: Jayson Werth: I know he's hurt and he probably will start the season on the DL, but when you draft in January you take guys like this and hope for a healthy return. I can certainly fill in at the OF spot for a month if needed in a 13-team league. I think this pick is going to pay off later on for this team.
17.6 Khris Davis: Just looking for power and I have BA to spare here. He was nothing great last year, but those 25 HRs will help this team.
18-20: Homer Bailey, Shelby Miller, Yusmeiro Petit: Three SPs with upside as they fill out my rotation. There's no guarantees with any of these guys, but the talent is there. Petit down the stretch as a SP was awesome and he could be the best bargain of the three. We'll see.
21.6 Jason Castro: Not a help for my BA and may not start all year, but 2nd Catcher options are painful everywhere.
22.8 Mike Moustakas: I'm believing in the post-season bump and hoping for the best as my UT. I can always replace him.
23.6 Jennry Mejia: A potential 3rd closer to move in and out of my starting lineup when needed. I like it.
24.8 Jose Peraza: I'm betting on an early callup and a total Braves rebuilding job. Bargain here.
Reserve Rounds: I added SPs Jonathan Niese and T.J. House to fill out a pretty good staff. Reserves Andrelton Simmons (starts for Peraza if needed at MI), Nick Markakis (starts for Werth in April) and Solarte filled out the roster.
I think this team would look better with Ellsbury over Gordon and I know I jumped Arenado and Betts, but it was a January draft. Hopefully by April some of these gambles pay off and my rotation stays healthy. If all of that happens, hopefully this team competes into the football season. We'll see.
Okay, take your shots boys. I deserve 'em.

Two hitters below replacement level (Moustakas & Peraza) and an average staff = average to slightly-below average team
Re: FSTA Industry Draft In Las Vegas On Thursday
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Greg. I agree with much of what you said retrospectively. Maybe too early on dee but he surely can outperform that slot. I remember talk last year on how dee and / or billy were returning first round value. Surely easier to construct a team with one of those super Judies in an auction format. Hard to evaluate this draft. I'm sure some picks were made for "chatter" purposes. It was interesting listening to some of the commentary and interviews. I think much of the nfbc community is better prepared than some of the experts at this point in the season.
Maybe I missed it - did you / could you share who won some of the awards? Stats was up for an award or two I think you mentioned?

I think Abreu over Goldschimdt is ridiculous.
