Main Event KDS

Gentleman, without getting into specifics particularly this year's draft....

I wanted to know what criteria do you use when coming up with your KDS for that season's draft?

What tools if any do you use?

What trends if any do you look for?

Ultimately how do you decide your season's KDS.

For me, strictly drafting preference, no other real analysis. IF I were to do something other than straight butter, I would prefer to draft in the middle (7,8,9). Personally can't stand drafting around the corners (which means by drafting 15th last year, I got my least preference).
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Here are two recent Draft Champions League DCs to look at. It shows what some folks are thinking about now. I'd say about one-third of DC owners go straight 1-15, but many do take the time to change their preferences for these drafts and almost everyone changes them for the Main Events. You might get 1 or 2 for the Mains per league who go straight 1-15, but almost everyone changes it a little bit.

I've had owners who are personally mad at me for not getting a high draft pick, but in baseball you can see that most folks do want to be near the top of the draft. So you have a 1 in 15 shot at No. 1, 1 in 14 shot at No. 2 (in most cases), 1 in 13 shot at No. 3, etc. In football it's different because with Third Round Reversal the preferences are all over the board as many owners like to draft near the bottom of the order. That doesn't happen here in baseball.

Anyway, take a look at these preferences to see if you learn anything:

Looking at this league, the average KDS received was 4.53, which means that on average each owner got their 4th or 5th preferred spot and seven teams got a Top 3 preference. That's not bad for a 15 team league. The lowest anyone got here was their 9th preference. The preferred spots they got were 1st (2 teams) 2nd (3 teams), 3rd (2 teams), 5th (3 teams), 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th (2 teams).

This was another Draft Champions League on the same date. Results were slightly different as again 5 teams went straight 1-15 and many wanted the top spots. Average KDS received here was 5.66; not as good as above:

In this league, three teams got their 1st preference and six teams got a Top 3 preference. But four teams also got their 10th or lower preference. Spots received were: 1st (3 teams), 2nd (2 teams), 3rd, 4th, 5th (2 teams), 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th.

Thanks guys for the replies, I do always enjoy setting my KDS up, and this being my 3rd year in the Main(4th+5th entries) I just wanted to get some fresh eyes into the do's and don'ts or strategy in making said selections, I assumed that many leave there's unchanged but where is the fun or strategy in that? Anyway this seems to be an interesting year, and I can't wait to draft again soon.

It's not for the ME but in case you care, I've been using the following KDS in the Draft Champions leagues this winter:

8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,7,6,5,4,3,2,1

The main goals here are twofold.
Firstly, I'm very high on Anthony Rendon this season and when I've tried to get him in round 1 by picking 13 or 11 KDS I've not gotten him both times because he went anywhere from 11 to 9 respectively. I want him on my teams so I ask for KDS8 since virtually no one ranks him higher than 8th.

Secondly I'm tring to avoid missing out on any positional runs since I'm using a modified 'Tiers' system for the first time this year. Picking at KDS8 ensures the minimum number of picks being revealed after I make my choice.

I rarely want to draft first, usually in the middle.

I look at the ADP of the first few rounds and line up what I can "expect" from each draft position. I look for what pairings I like the best, and then I set my KDS accordingly.

It's interesting how many people put #1 first in their KDS; it's always in the second half for me.
