Non-Tender Marcus Giles?
Somebody must know something I do not (at least that is what my wife infers often)? Why would the Braves just non-tender a guy like Marcus Giles, which reportedly they are getting ready to do. Is he that hurt? He did not do well in the lead-off role last year, but he is no lead-off hitter so that is no surprise. I do not understand this one...
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

My question more than anything is why not offer him a contract direct to try to avoid arbitration?
His arbitration tag of over 5 million is what is scaring off trade partners- that should tell him you are not going to get that on the open market especially when you consider the demand for starting 2b's is essentially 2 teams and Loretta and Belliard are still unsigned also.
Throw a one year 3.5 million dollar off at him see if he bites. If they resign him and trade for Baldelli as heavily rumored that would be a lineup with American league level depth in the NL. Laroche hitting 7th, Renteria 8th my goodness..

The story the "media"likes to ignore is that it turned out that many more pitchers were roiding. Many people stood by the opinion that roids would not help pitchers. But,pitcher after pitcher seemed to have "lost"four to five miles off of the fastball.Back to Giles I have the opportunity to sit and listen to the scouts talk amongst themselves before the marlin games. The name I heard oh so many times was Marcus Giles. They made no bones over what they thought about his usage.

this line made me chuckle. Back in college 2 pals who frequented the weight room starting getting pretty pumped up. Big necks the whole works. It got out that they were juicing. They were then dubbed around campus as .... the balloon brothers.

We're here to pump (clap) YOU up! Ha! That would have been perfect. Their only saving grace was that the girly men hit the scene a couple years after

I agree. Steroids wouldn't be surprising for either Giles brother. It has to be something...if you can give Pierre $9M and Matthews $10M, why not give Giles about $5-$6M???
I guess we'll have to wait and see. I know this is not what this thread started out to be, but are there any players that anyone avoids an early round pick on because of steroid fears? Losing a 1-5 round pick for 1/3 season can be devastating.
I know last year, I had some players I tried to avoid (maybe I overthought that angle a bit too much) but I couldn't see an early pick on Helton. I had my doubts about Sheffield also.
I would feel bad if these guys were clean and others like Giambi rewarded owners who got them later.
I admit, I did expect sharper drop off in HR totals.

Bonds
Giambi
Boone
Giles
Giles
McGwire
Sosa
Canseco

a quick story from inside the clubhouse. my brother is a caddy @ eastlake country club in atlanta. he had the privledge of caddying the braves outing this year and i was excited to hear which player he had caddyied for that day, to my dismay he caddyied(sp??)for one of their broadcasters who was quite loose lipped about alot of the players. for what it is worth marcus giles is known as a huge jerk and the braves have been trying to unload him for quite a while. the broadcaster mentioned many bar brawls and cover ups for him. once i saw that he was non-tenedered i had to chuckle!! i am glad to see an orginzation get rid of some of its cancer. remember guys, there is alot we dont see or understand that happens off the field that affects their onfield situation or contracts. I guess that is the disadvantage of being a homey. I had not heard or chose to ignore the clubhouse cancer and the 'roids stuff (which certainly could have "assisted" in all the injuries last year). Thanks...

I don't understand how Giles has stayed near the top of the lineup the last two years, definetely a seven or eight hitter. Managers get in a comfort zone and automatically make out a lineup. Jack Wilson hitting two devalues Bay a bit. Other examples?

tons worse than Marcus Giles.

Dusty Baker, genius. And that followed Pierre and his OBP.

Dusty had to go. granted the team had lots of injuries last year and maybe they went to war without enough weapons, but he let the team quit, lay down and die, didn't make any attempt that I saw to stop it and didn't seem to care. Just a guess on my part, but I don't think Lou will stand for that. If he can infuse some heart into the team and God forbid get them to play fundementally sound baseball as a "team". We may see a winner some time in my lifetime. I wonder if Lou is young enough to get all that accomplished before it kills him. The Cubs are a tough nut to crack even with the extra spending. Somehow no matter who manages, who owns them, or who plays for them they always play the same. Swing at anything, swing for the fences every time, and oh by the way we can relax now and play like idiots. The fans will love us anyway. Sorry for rambling on. Watching the Cubs for over 40 years will do this to you.
