This is my first year using FAAB. I know there is no right answer to this question but how much do people usually bid on free agents? I know there is a difference between bidding on a backup middle infielder and a new closer but what is a typical bid?

There is no typical bid.
If a player kills it in the Minors, he could go in the large three figures. $200-950.
If Joe Nathan is released and Soria gets the job, he could go from $100-600.
If Max Scherzer has Tommy John and Tanner Roark is a starter once again, he could go for virtually any amount, depending on need.
If Everth Cabrera steals five bases the first week. Same thing.
It is dictated by time of the year, needs for your team, needs of contending teams, judgment of how much a player will contribute in the future, and really, sometimes just liking a player.

After the first few weeks, it'll get easier as experience grows.

I agree with Dan. Wide range of bids based on player and needs.

It also depends on who you are replacing on your team.
I just saw Andrew McCutchen leave tonights minor league game holding his side. He seemed to be in some discomfort. If McCutchen were to go on the DL with an injury, his replacement would be worth far more to the player that took Andrew in the first round than he would be to the player looking to pick up a few extra AB's out of their 5th OFer slot.

Welcome to the hell that is FAAB, where your Sundays are forever ruined, where your mind plays tricks on you, and where a $50 bid on some stiff like Jose Velverde at noon on Sunday somehow turns into $350 by 10:00 PM EST. Good luck. If you figure it out, please let me know, still trying to figure it out myself going on my 8th year. I'm quietly chuckling to myself as to the innocent naivete of your question. However, as I think about what's ahead , my chuckle is quickly turning into a scared chuckle, then a quicker, whining, border-line-crying-chuckle a la Ted Baxter as I think about my own naivete and what's ahead for the next 26 Sundays.

I don't know if I would be comfortable drafting him in the 1st Round anymore.
