NFBC Entry Fee Level
I've been giving this some thought and want some feedback from the MB folks. Would you be against the NFBC raising the entry fee in the future to $1,300 and increasing the second and third place league prizes to $2,500 and $1,000? We'd then have league prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000, while raising the entry fee only $50. I'd even consider reducing the co-manager fee to make the hit less for most teams.
This would be a a strong payback within the leagues and then as we grow beyond 360 teams we could increase the overall prizes. I know some folks would like to see first and third place prizes even higher, but I don't want to raise the entry fee too much at this point as we still need to continue to grow this event and eventually we need to increase the top prizes. It's a thought I'm having for the NFBC and NFFC and wanted to get some feedback this week. Thanks.

Get it done greg. Put it into effect for this year if possible

I think you can leave the grand peize at $100,000 for quite a while. It's a big prize and a nice round #. I would encourage raising second and third league prizes. 359 won't winn the 100K of course and winng, or doing well in your league is the best most of us will see in any 1 year. 2nd in your league should produce a profit and 3rd I still think should breal even if possible. Like what you've doen this year raising overall league prizes. Have no complaints. I know you need to make some cash too. Your running a great league and deserve your cut. I have no problem with an extra $50. If your goona pony up 1250, 1300 ain't no thing.

I think the increase is reasonable, especially given that the $100k was kept intact even though we had only 195 in the first year. I say go for it.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I'm all for it. Raise the entry fee as much as you like as long as a comparable/proportional increase in payoff % is instituted. I agree that, if possible, 3rd place breaking even would be ideal, but obviously, you can only do what the numbers allow.

sounds good Greg, how about the 1250 auctions?
NL is now 7500/ 2750/ 1900 ...
... how about 7700/ 3000/ 2000 ?
I'd also favor the 650 auctions getting a bump to 700.

Great idea Greg! I would love to see it take place for the 2007 season.

I'd like for third place to pay back what you put in, or possibly a free entry into the next year's contest. IMHO that would be better than raising second place.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

Greg:
I'd like to see you raise the fee to whatever it takes to allow the top THREE teams in each league reach at minimum a "break-even" point.
Raise it to $1,350 if it allows third money to reach an equal amount of prize money. All for the raise.

Yeah, I don't disagree with this as finishing third in a 15-team league is quite an accomplishment. But it would be tough to raise the fee too much this year considering I didn't jump on this idea right away. I think a $50 bump this year would help us get towards our goal of rewarding the top three league finishers properly and maybe in 2008 we can do what you're asking.
To ease the pain of the $50 increase, I think I'll reduce the co-manager fee from $100 to $50. Then it's still $1,350 for teams and I'm just giving more back in prize money. That way you guys still win. We'll see how this plays out.

I'd also favor the 650 auctions getting a bump to 700. Right now I'll keep the auctions as is, but going forward we'll look this over. My main goal right now is to increase our league prizes in the main event and remain consistent with our NFFC event and I'm leaning this way as well for football in 2007.

Great idea -- particularly the 3rd place being a free entry. While I am opposed to 3rd place money in football, I think it makes a lot of sense in baseball (bigger league and tougher to win).
Looks like it's unanimous thus far.

Greg,
I'm your #1 fan. I really think you can get up to 500 entries in the main event. You are the expert, whatever you think the entry fee should be, go for it. But as a customer, it would be a nice touch to ad some icing to the cake. Here are some suggestions:
1. Party. I can't see why we don't have a poker party after the main event on Saturday. Poker is huge right now. There has to be a lot of potential owners that may come to a baseball draft and poker. Maybe serve some pizza, soft drinks, beer, lets have a poker party after the main.
2. Auction league championships. I know NFBC can increase the participation in the auction leagues. Maybe have a overall championship prize for all the leagues.
3. Triple Play. Any owner wins 3 events should recieve a prize. Friday auction, Saturday main, and Sunday Ultimate
4. Double Play. Any owner that can win 2 events. Friday auction, Saturday main.
Throw some prizes to the owners that win 2 -3 events. I think a great prize would be a hotel room for 2 nights for next years events.
5. Discounts. I noticed on the league sign up page there are discounts for airlines and rental cars. How about when any owner brings in a new owner, they will get a cerdit.
Just thinking of ways to increase NFBC. Not only the main event.
One more thing Greg. Hows your daugther doing? Believe it or not, I got her a little present I would like to send to you. I need her name. Sorry, but I don't know your daugthers name.
Hope all is well, can't wait to see you

You guys need to hire a social director and get some parties going.

I like the idea of 1500-2500-6000
6000 is more of a profit and will attract more owners.
1) What would it take to get to that under current system? $100?
or
2) Suggestion: raise leagues to 16 teams to get there.
Greg, as you know, I've run 16-team, mixed, snake drafts since 1984. There's really not much a difference between 15 and 16 from my playing in NFBC, if any at all...
All of this for next year, of course.

On this one, have levels of prizes based on points earned... like..
3 pts) Champion
2 pts) 2nd
1 pt) 3rd
So 6 pts would be more valuable than 4...
Don't know what the prizes would be, but owners love little carrots to nibble at.

Greg:
Alot of good ideas from KIMO. Also like the scoring suggestions from UFS.
The Main Event is what drives the bus, but why not offer an incentive to take part in the other LIVE events. Most will travel to take part and my thought process has always been if I'm going to be in town why not take part in as many leagues as financially possible? This will help grow the base and offer expansion in the future.
The "Double Play" ( nice touch KIMO ) makes the most sense as adding the "third" league which consists of the $5k entry fee isn't feasible for most - myself included. Without a partner the Ultimate is a tough purchase.

You guys need to hire a social director and get some parties going. These are all great suggestions. You're in the running for the social director's job!!
Perry Van Hook ran a poker tournament on the Saturday night of the NFBC's main event two years ago in Las Vegas and I trust if there was enough interest he'd do it again. That's a tough night in Las Vegas to get a poker room, but bug him or Zaleski and maybe we can get it done. Last year a bunch of guys also played poker on Saturday night in a private setting, so it's definitely possible. I'd love to host some fun on Saturday night if the interest is there.
I pay $100 per referral if you bring in a new NFBC member, so keep recruiting and I'll add it up. There's nothing better than a word-of-mouth referral.
I like the Double Plays and Triple Plays. Let me figure it all out and we'll get it done.
