A Contemporary Temporary Game

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri May 01, 2015 9:46 am

Want to see a pretty good looking team when leaving the draft room in March?
Here it is...

C- Yadier Molina
C- Devin Mesoraco
1B- Brandon Belt
2B- Ian Kinsler
3B- Kris Bryant
SS- Jose Reyes
CI- Joe Mauer
MI- Dee Gordon
OF- Jason Werth
OF- Melky Cabrera
OF- Michael Brantley
OF- Marcell Ozuna
OF-Angel Pagan
U- Yasmani Tomas

Starters-
Jon Lester
Corey Kluber
Phil Hughes
James Paxton
Jered Weaver
RA Dickey
Kyle Hendricks

Most draft observers would say that this team had a pretty good mix of established players and those who are younger and have higher ceilings.
Belt, Kinsler, and Bryant provide a lot of power from the triange infield postions.
Molina and Mesoraco, a catching tandem that any drafter would be happy to leave a room with them on their roster.

The pitching, a mix of the younger starters in Paxton and Hendricks.
The experience of Dickey, Weaver, and Hughes.
While Lester and Kluber were thought to be the go-to pitchers.

A good looking team.
Or, is it?
If drafting this team, we would not have one home run on May 1.
We also would not have one Win on May 1.
We haven't suffered much, by way of injury. Only Jose Reyes has hit the disabled list.
We're also getting plenty of stats from Gordon, Kinsler, and others.
Just no homers.
Nor have we even lucked into a Win.

If anything, this shows us just how long the season is.
If this were a real team, the owner would be tearing his hair out by the roots.
Even though he knows he drafted a solid team, his players are not doing him a solid.
At least in those two categories.
We are only through one month of the season.
If 15th in your league, there is still plenty of time to make a move.
If first, know that in the NFBC, everything is temporary.
Until the season is over.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Substitute V-Mart for Tomas and you have an even better team with zero home runs.

If, before the season, I offered folks a bet that Freddie Galvis would have more home runs in April than Molina, Mesoraco, Belt, Kinsler, Bryant, Brantley, Werth, Ozuna and V-Mart combined, I would have been committed. With baseball, you just never know .... At the end of the season, I may have some successful fantasy teams and some spectacularly unsuccessful fantasy teams. However, if I was asked after the drafts and before the season which teams would be my better ones, I almost always would pick incorrectly. I've come out of drafts loving teams only to get hammered once the games started counting.

Dan I am in the same boat as you. Sitting near or at the bottom of the standings with a team I really liked. For review here was my team....keep in mind that this draft took place in January

C E. Gattis $19
C J. Saltalamachia $5
1B A. Rizzo $32
2B C. Utley $5
SS A Simmons $3
3B E. Longoria $22
CI M. Adams $8
MI O. Infante $4
U B. Butler $2
OF J. Upton $24
OF JD Martinez $11
OF M Cuddyer $5
OF C Crawford $4
OF D Viciedo $1
P A Wainright $25
P M Harvey $18
P H Ryu $14
P R Dickey $11
P M Cain $4
P C Tillman $4
P N Eovaldi $1
RP K Jansen $21
RP S Cishek $17

Thought pitching and hitting were both solid. No team speed, but thought team would compete well in all other categories. And then the season started:

Wainwright -- gone for season with freak injury
Ryu - hasn't thrown a pitch yet
Cain - hasn't thrown a pitch yet
Jansen - hasn't thrown a pitch yet
Cishek - last I checked, ERA around 9 for year
Utley- lowest batting average in all of MLB ??!!
Viciedo - apparently out of baseball at present
Gattis -- traded to AL - can't hit
Salty - shockingly designated for assignment despite being reliable C for years

It's almost enough to make me step back and think -- I really have no idea what I'm doing....Almost.
