What round does selecting Pedro Martinez make sense? mid-20's or not this year?

I do think you have it right that if you want him it has to be mid 20's.

I'd take him in the 31st round

koq - he has to be a better value than josh towners and Shinji Mori were back in 2006 (your 29th and 30th rounders), doesn't he?

(1) In mid-March 2006, Shingi Mori was a closer candidate for the Devil Rays. As a 30th round pick, there was no downside. Of course, days later, he was declared out for the season -- he was my first cut.

(2) Josh Towers showed some promise in 2005. Little known fact: 13 of his last 14 starts in 2005 were quality starts (3 ER or less with 6 or more IP). I figured I could spot-start him in certain scenarios, but he blew up last year.

With Pedro, you know exactly what you're getting for the first 3 months: NOTHING. I like some degree of upside in all my picks -- Pedro doesn't offer that. Pass.
