NFBC Content Panel: Catchers

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:36 am

Okay, all 15 members of the NFBC Content Panel responded this week and ranked their Top 20 Catchers. Here's the composite list in order and some interesting notes:

1. Joe Mauer

2. Victor Martinez

3. Brian McCann

4. Kenji Johjima

5. Michael Barrett

6. Ramon Hernandez

7. Ivan Rodriguez

8. Mike Piazza

9. Jorge Posada

10. A.J. Pierzynski

11. Russell Martin

12. Jason Varitek

13. Paul Lo Duca

14. Jason Kendall

15. Johnny Estrada

16. Bengi Molina

17. Gerald Laird

18. Josh Bard

19. Miguel Olivo

20. Ronny Paulino

Some interesting facts:

1. Joe Mauer was ranked first on 13 of 15 ballots. Only Victor Martinez received the two other first place votes.

2. Martinez received 11 first place votes, two second place votes and two third place votes. Brian McCann received the two other second place votes, but he also ranked fifth once.

3. The dropoff was huge after the Top 3, with Michael Barrett far behind at fourth. He ranked as high as fourth and as low as ninth. Ramon Hernandez followed closely, but he was ranked as high as fourth and as low as 13th.

4. Other wild spreads included: Mike Piazza as high as fourth and as low as 17th; and A.J. Pierzynski as high as sixth and as low as 13th. The rest of the catchers kind of fell into place down the line.

Thoughts?

Dooh! I got 19 out of the top 20 (though not in order) for my submissions. I was one of the two who had Victor Martinez 1st. I also had Ramon Hernandez 4th, and McCann 5th, so I guess I was a bit of a curve buster.

The only one in the top 20 I did not have on my list is Ronny Paulino. I picked Miguel Olivo. His BA will kill you, but Paulino does not have the power and his BA will not be a bed of roses either.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Ok, I screwed up and forgot to include Johjima on my list. I would've put him 7th. Turned in my list late last night after getting home from Mexico and many margerita's. Not sure if it would've changed anything on the overall list.

Looks like there is an error here since Martinez wasn't in first place. What should it say?
