Live Chat With Greg: Thursday 3 pm ET

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Feb 10, 2016 7:37 pm

Okay, I know we're filling up these Message Boards with a lot of signup lists, but it's our best way to communicate with our strong audience about the latest openings. Not only that, but WE'RE SELLING SHIT OUT!! Kudos to everyone who has supported the NFBC Draft Champions format and those who have supported the debut Cutline Championship.

In fact, have you seen all of the new names entering the NFBC this year? It's been amazing, especially in the DCs. Great job everyone and welcome to all of you first-time players.

That being said, we need to talk about draft results, we need to pick up the baseball talk, we need to discuss amongst us certain players, and we need to keep dialogue going. Heck, I haven't even bothered many of you to get signed up for our live drafts. Don't worry, those phone calls are coming soon, I promise. :D

I've got a busy morning tomorrow, but let's try to post some questions on this thread in advance of tomorrow evening and I'll jump online whenever I can and get a Live Chat rolling. I'll definitely be around at 6 pm ET tomorrow, but feel free to post questions here ahead of time. Let's hook up for an hour and make this a weekly gathering. What do you say?

There's plenty to talk about this upcoming season. Who wants to get it started with some early questions? Thanks all.

I'll start you off Greg with a multi-question post. Some fun, and some business.

1. What are you most excited about so far in all of your contests? Is there anyone that are exceeding your expectations/under-performing so far?

2. What is your favorite part of the spring? The early drafting of anticipation, the live events, or once everything has started? Other than the getting to see everyone aspect at the live events, what do you enjoy most out there in Vegas?

3. Out of the DC, Cutline, and OC's, what is your current favorite that if you could play in one, you would choose and why?

4. Biggest pet peeve about online drafts that you are the administrator in?

5. Do you think Brewers will get rid of Lucroy before the season, and if not when do you see them trading him?

6. Who has you most excited on the Brewers team this year that will make the opening day roster that you just like to watch play, not necessarily for fantasy purposes?

Let's continue with Brewers questions. (Have to give Greg a chance to discuss his team before they become irrelevant this season.)

1. Brewers closer at the start of the season? Brewers closer at the end of the season?

2. Khris Davis: under-rated beast or over-rated good power/low batting average guy?

3. Domingo Santana: a poor man's Khris Davis or something better in 2016?

4. Ryan Braun: battled injuries but still contributed in five categories. Is it all downhill from here or should he still be drafted as a Top 50 player?

5. Finally, a non-Brewers question. There now are 18 starting pitchers with ADPs of 51 or lower. Who do you think are the most under-rated and over-rated of those guys (and why)?

Thanks,
Mike

Okay, I'll continue the Brewers theme for the first couple.

1) How many innings do you project for Jorge Lopez?

2) When do you expect them to promote Orlando Arcia?

3) Longest home run you've ever seen in person?

4) Best pitching performance you've ever seen in person?

5) Friendliest baseball player you've met?

6) Anybody not so friendly?

7) If a turtle loses his shell, is he naked or homeless?

I'm going to be there 13 days this year, so that's less than 4 Corona's a day. I'm taking the OVER!! That's an easy bet.

I hope you guys know I'm not a die-hard Brewers fan. I mean, this isn't like the Packers where if you cut me I bleed Green & Gold. I'll do my best to answer Brewers questions, but trust me that most of you know more about this organization than I do right now. But I do think it's time to blow it up and start over, so I approve of this message that our 30-year-old GM is providing.

Keith Law has the Brewers' Farm System ranked 5th in MLB after being 28th last year. Already the kid is winning. ;)

Ahh, I was going off of six days at 8.5 per day thinking maybe there was a break in the weeks. Lol. So with the adjustment to 13 days... the new over/ under is 110.50 -- I'm still guessing OVER?!

1. What are you most excited about so far in all of your contests? Is there anyone that are exceeding your expectations/under-performing so far?
Dusty wins the first Corona for the first question. Make that questions, so give him a 6-pack!! Here we go:

1. Honestly, I talked about it last night on our radio show. We brought in Rich Wilson of Prospect361.com and he thanked me for filling the winter void with our Draft Champions Leagues. He said what a great way to bring baseball fans together and to do drafts over a 3-week period. He said I must be proud of that contest and I am. I really think we've created something special not just for the NFBC but for the entire fantasy baseball community because these DCs get people talking about baseball from November through the start of the season in April.

Think about it: We're probably going to top 200 Draft Champions Leagues this year, or just over 3,000 teams. People are drafting in all kinds of fashions in this format because they love the idea of drafting 50 players and still managing their Starting Lineup for 26 weeks. There's still game management involved. I know that some folks would love to have this format as an optimal scoring format, but I think there are a lot of people who are playing just the DC with us and love the in-season game management aspect of these.

What I'm most proud of is that the DCs are bringing in SO MANY new players to the NFBC. Have you looked at the signup lists? It's not NFBC guys prepping for the Main Event. It's new people joining the NFBC and enjoying this one format. I hope it leads them to other NFBC contests and I think it will, but this one contest is bringing in a lot of new people who might be prepping for their own local league. So let's continue to welcome them, show them the proper etiquette in the DCs, and compete hard against them during the season. It's an amazing way to bring people to the NFBC and there's no doubt the format has been a greater success than I ever imagined.

Here's a little history lesson on the DCs. KJ was the one who told me I should consider doing slow drafts. He was playing on AntSports and the guy was running individual leagues with payouts of like 95% or something goofy. The idea was good but it just didn't seem like the site was going to grow. KJ said I should run some slow drafts to bring folks to our site (at the time this was for football) and get people drafting by July and August. I told him it was a great idea, but if we're going to do this we should create an overall prize pool for it. So we created the slow draft format, set the first grand prize at like $3,000 and it became a hit. And while I know we haven't thrown all of our programming resources at this format, the DCs have been bigger and better than I ever imagined because EVERYONE LOVES TO DRAFT. I know that. People love it.

If we threw every bell and whistle at this format it would grow the DCs and we know that. Our veterans demand that. We know we can make them better. But right now it's great to see so many people drafting so early in the off-season -- and that goes for baseball and especially football -- and we wouldn't have that without this cool DC format. You guys came up with the 15 team, 50-round format. I just wrote the rules and guaranteed the prizes. It's been a labor of love to see how far they've grown in such a short time. We should all be proud of the DCs and what they've done for the NFBC.

And that of course has led to the ADPs, which are now the Gold Standard in the fantasy baseball industry. The DCs have created the ADPs, which every host on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio now uses. It's been one of the best promotional tools we have in the NFBC, so thanks again there.

2. What is your favorite part of the spring? The early drafting of anticipation, the live events, or once everything has started? Other than the getting to see everyone aspect at the live events, what do you enjoy most out there in Vegas?
My favorite part is getting the hell out of Wisconsin for LABR drafts in early March and for the live events in Las Vegas. It's what keeps me going at my old age.

I love seeing the people in Las Vegas. I mean, a LOT of work goes into planning the drafts, having the facilitators, making sure we have the rooms set up, getting the hotel contracts done, having the right food for everyone, making sure everyone shows up, replacing people who somehow cancel out at the last moment, all kinds of little things. I don't enjoy myself as much as I'd like because there's always another event after the one I'm at. But I LOVE being with everyone and throwing a good party and talking baseball with everyone else. It's just that my mind is racing on 100 other things I have to do.

In the last 13 years, our industry has transformed into an Internet business and that's all well and good. Heck, in 2004 and 2005 we never even had a single league online. Now Online leagues are much bigger than our live events. But I enjoy the live events and if they ever go away then I'm sure STATS or whoever else will be able to find someone else who can do my job. Any young kid can run and fill online drafts. But hopefully I'm unique when it comes to making sure the live drafts are done well, done at the right places, and done in a personal-touch way.

So this is an easy answer: The best part of this job is meeting everyone at the live drafts.

3. Out of the DC, Cutline, and OC's, what is your current favorite that if you could play in one, you would choose and why?
It's impossible to pick your favorite child, so I can't do that. But obviously the Main Event is our signature event and I can remember every waking moment in 2004 when I thought we were going to be one and done. I mean, I guaranteed prizes based on 300 teams and we struggled to reach 195 teams. We lost a lot of money at a time when we were an Employee Owned Company. It's no fun being part of an ESOP company and you just created an event that lost tens of thousands of dollars. And then I did it again in football, where we lost even more money.

But Krause Publications stuck with my idea and in 2005 we sold out the NFBC Main Event and we've sold it out for 11 straight seasons. It's my pride and joy because it was a very unique concept with 15 teams, 30 rounds, no DL, just a tough, tough format. And I'm not sure why I wrote the rules the way I did but I just had a feeling. The 15-team format has transformed the industry from the Yahoo and ESPN 10-teamers to what is the best contest in the industry now. I'm proud of that.

If I were retired I'd love to play the Online Championship because I'm probably better suited for a 12-team, 30-round draft. I'm just not as baseball knowledgeable as I used to be when I edited the first issue of the year for 22 years. But I'd definitely do a couple of DCs and I'd love to do the Cutline. Are you kidding? Give me an optimal scoring team in baseball and football and I'm happy.

4. Biggest pet peeve about online drafts that you are the administrator in?
Not really anything with the online drafts. I actually enjoy facilitating those and interacting in the Chat. I think some guys get a kick out of it when I'm the draft moderator. So I like it.

I just get frustrated with the DCs. For one, I wish we'd put all the bells and whistles in place to make these move a little faster and keep people accountable, but I can't waste my energy over that. What we have in place works when everyone is considerate of everyone else. And that goes both ways. Not everyone wants to get done in 10 days. Nobody should want to get done in 30 days. So that happy medium has been 2-3 rounds per day and get done in 20 days. That's reasonable. And I want to create leagues that put those owners who want it faster than that in their own leagues. We can do that.

I also want this new draft room live so that we can get folks drafting so much easier on Apple products and on smartphones. We'll launch it again on Tuesday and will always keep the link to the old draft room for anyone having trouble on the phone. I want this new technology to work because we need more upgrades as our owners draft and Register and watch everything on their phones. We have to keep up. We just have to.

Okay, I must try to play noon hour hoops now. I'm sucking because of a bad hamstring, but if I don't work out and if I keep drinking this many Corona's I'll die young and fat. So I'm off to hoops. Wish me good luck.

Greg, it's been so many years that I think we take the greatness of the 15-team, Main Event format for granted. There's no doubt your ideas and persistance in the face of variously flawed ownership groups have turned the NFBC into the Majors of fantasy baseball. Everything being done by others in the industry with vast resources ▬ they're still just running farm teams from which the best players move up to the NFBC.

Thanks much. I really appreciate that.

Think about the guys who first joined the NFBC in 2004 and 2005 who are still playing here today with the same passion that they had more than a decade ago. It's one of the most unique and special group of baseball fans you'll find anywhere. Passionate. Loyal. Smart. Die-hard Baseball Fans. And all of them found the NFBC, turned that passion into this contest and just have a blast playing a challenging game while getting more and more out of the baseball season each year. It's really special and it's a fraternity I'm proud to be a part of.

I hope I don't get in trouble by saying this, but I have to be honest here. People in the NFBC have to realize that ownership groups -- and I've been a part of four different ones since 2004 (Krause's, F&W, Fanball, STATS) -- see the NFBC and NFFC differently than the players do. I mean, they all like it right away because they see the amount of gross revenue, they see a valuable list of customers and they see the passion of those customers. But then folks dive in deeper and see that payouts are over 85%, there's a lot of costs involved and at the end of the day it has a limit to how big it can grow. So it's not that anyone sours on the high-stakes model, it's just that the idea of throwing every last resource at it doesn't make sense. NFBC owners don't see it the same way, but I understand it when you run the numbers and see that even with continued growth the margins will always be slim. And they should be to keep players coming back and getting a worthy ROI.

We do have something special here and I think we will continue to improve and get better. Sometimes the boards get out of hand with the criticism we get/deserve, but there are other games who were here before us who are now struggling to survive. I'm going to continue to innovate and take chances with new games because we can't just sit still or this industry will pass us by. So keep throwing new ideas my way and we'll make this great contest even better. Thanks all.

Okay, I'm going to finish up Dusty in one big swoop!!

5. Yes, they have to trade him and just keep rebuilding that Farm System. They don't have any Catcher in the minors of note, so any trade has to bring back someone who can catch in the majors. But I think they trade him early in the season.

6. He won't make the Opening Day roster, but I can hardly wait to see Orlando Arcia. When I was 14 Robin Yount broke into the majors and he was always my favorite player. Let's rebuild with another shortstop and see what happens. I also want to watch Josh Hader, who I saw dominate in the Arizona Fall League this season. The Brewers haven't had a lefty throw 98 mph since Dan Plesac, and he was a reliever. I want to see if Hader can stick in the rotation and be good. There's no guarantee that he can stay healthy with that motion, but I'm hoping for the best.

1. I think the Brewers will try Will Smith. I always that Jeffress had a good enough fastball to be a closer and he can't possibly be more wild than K-Rod. I think Smith wins the job but I want to see Jeffress get the first crack at it.

2. I'm not a big Khris Davis fan (he strikes out too much for me), but what you saw in the second half last year is what he's capable of if he stays healthy. Last year he hit .249 with 21 home runs, 48 RBIs and 6 Stolen Bases after the All-Star Break. Now that's pretty good. If you're looking for power, he's not a bad pickup this year.

3. I don't know a lot about him, but 46 strikeouts in 121 ABs when he reached the majors last year is pretty telling. That being said, he's 22 and the Brewers need a young guy in center. What the heck, let's see what he's got.

4. It's all downhill from here because of the continuous injury issues. I mean, it's oblique, neck, shoulder, legs, you name it. He would drive me crazy if he was on my team because every day is going to be a mystery on whether he plays or not. That being said, I still love watching him hit as he just drives that ball to right center so beautifully. I think more of what you saw last year is in store at 130-140 games.

5. I'm not going to influence any picks, but I will talk about the 18 Starting Pitchers in the Top 50. Last year in the NFBC there were 11 Starting Pitchers going in the Top 50. Now THERE'S 18!! Have we ever seen such a jump in one position? No. We've never seen people go after Home Runs like this, or Stolen Bases or Saves. You now have to get 1,400+ strikeouts to compete in that category, so everyone is chasing the top starters. It's fascinating.

How are the sign-up numbers on the online championship plus going? Are they meeting your expectations? What contests are above your expectations on signups right now and which are below?

1. I'm really not sure. The Brewers had a lot of good prospects from that Double-A Biloxi team and I'd love to see them all start the year at Triple-A and get more seasoning. There's no reason for the Brewers to promote any of those guys right away, including Lopez. Let's shoot for 2017 with this bunch, keep adding prospects and do what Theo and the Cubs did. I hope most of these guys stay at Triple-A most of this season.

2. Arcia is different. Rich Wilson of Prospect361.com said on our radio show last night that he thinks Arcia comes up June 18th. That's apparently the day of Super 2, so I'll believe him. There's absolutely no reason to bring him up any earlier. So plan accordingly if you're drafting Arcia this year.

3. Rob Deer at County Stadium around 1983 or so. They had said that only one player to that point had ever hit it over the bleachers and I was in left field on a Sunday afternoon. The place was packed and we had been there on Saturday night, so there was definitely a hangover involved. Deer hit a screamer right at us that was still rising when it went over my head. I wanted no part of that ball, I'll tell you that. It didn't go out of County Stadium, but it could have gone right through the bleachers. Those bleachers went up pretty far back and when I heard that Cecil Fielder cleared the bleachers a few years later I was just totally amazed. I didn't think that was possible. That had to have been a 450-foot shot to do that.

4. I was at Nolan Ryan's 300th win game at County Stadium. He was just amazing that night. We all cheered for him to get the win. I was also at Robin Yount's 3,000th hit game at County Stadium. About as cool as anything I'd ever seen. Those top stars just know how to come through in front of packed crowds. They never let you down.

5. I interviewed Paul Molitor at length once at spring training when he was with the Blue Jays. He was as nice as could be. I was part of a group interviewing Ricky Henderson once at spring training. Never understood A SINGLE WORD he said. I played back the tape recorder several times and just gave up.

6. Ken Griffey Jr. He was just a dick to me at spring training one year.

7. He's be frozen here. It was -4 this morning when I came to work and -18 with the wind chill. Bring on spring training.

We'll see what happens there as we get to March. I don't blame anyone for sitting back on those, but honestly if I'm going to play the Online Championship for $350 why not play for $750 and a league prize of $4,000 rather than $1,400? I mean, the league prizes are very strong at the $750 and $1,500 levels. I think at the end of the day these will fill up nicely in March and the entire contest will get a boost, which is why we took the risk of the $100,000 grand prize.

If it doesn't go over, then you guys have spoken and I'll adjust next year. But I'd be very surprised if these didn't do well Online.

And many people have asked for a lower price point to experience the live drafts, so I'm definitely going to be disappointed if the $750 OC Plus doesn't fill in Las Vegas. I'm hoping to do those in the Executive Suite if possible. That should be a lot of fun. For $750 with a chance to win $104,000, why not?

Again, I have great confidence that people will look into these more and see that they have great ROI if you can finish first or second in your league. We'll be okay here when March rolls around.

Really, is this all you guys had for me today? Oh well.

I did want to answer a question from Neal Moses about how we're handling the Sunday, April 3rd games since we do have some 1 pm drafts. I don't have final confirmation yet from the programmers, but I believe that we are going to add those games into Week 1 this year, which means the first scoring period will run from Sunday, April 3rd to Sunday, April 10th. There will NOT be a separate Week 1 for just the Sunday April 3rd games. This will be for ALL contests this year.

I've always actually wanted this because that one Sunday night game almost didn't deserve its own scoring period. Now that MLB has thrown us a curveball with three games on the opening Sunday, we'll make those less important by making them part of Week 1 over an 8-day stretch.

Again, it's not official yet and I apologize for that, but that's the plan and we just have to make sure it's feasible to do. Thanks all.

KJ also asked me today about the Cutline scoring. If your highest scoring player at a position has a negative score, will that position get a zero or the negative score? The answer is the negative score. You must have a legal lineup at all times and if the best your two catchers can do for that week is -2 and -3, you get those scores. And yes, it likely will happen a few times this year.

Hope that helps.

Anything else tonight?

Oh, one more thing. I think we'll have the button on your Draft Prep to load your online draft room with the latest ADPs by tomorrow. That's the goal. It will be a button on that page that allows you to either change your Draft Prep and have that personalized list loaded into your online draft room or you can just hit the Load ADP button and the latest ADP will be your default list. That's coming very soon.

Speaking of the ADP, sorry that it got messed up this morning. I blame KJ's league that had me switching picks most of this week. :o That one got mixed in with our normal ADPs and it messed everything up. But we'll get that fixed tonight by taking those results out of the ADPs. Sorry about that.

We've got way too many ADP-as-a-crutch drafters anyway !!!

If Massotto takes a 2018-ready rookie in round 30 of a DC we'll know why.

Greg, two questions on this:

1) From the rules, the first FAAB is going to run on Sunday, April 3rd at 10pm EDT. Will we be able to use those pickups in Week One? Does it depend on whether the player is on 1 of the 6 teams that have games on April 3rd?

2) There are a few drafts taking place on Opening Day. How will the start/bench procedure work for those leagues?
