Picking on RotoBlurb

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sat Apr 02, 2016 8:27 am

This will be short...

Roto writers blurbs should be short, with facts, and a little opinion.
When giving that opinion, they should follow the 'Anybody Rule'.
The 'Anybody Rule' is something I try to avoid when writing these posts.
Here...I'll give you an example...

'Braves purchased the contract of RHP Alexi Ogando from Triple-A Gwinnett.
The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 4.05 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 6/2 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings of Grapefruit League play. He's slated to work in middle relief for the Braves, but could work his way into the late-inning mix if he excels.'

The writer has given a short account of Ogando and provided information.
But he broke the 'Anybody Rule' with his opinion.
His opinion could have read like this....

'ANYBODY slated to work in middle relief for the Braves, could work his way into the late-inning mix if he excels.'

His 'opinion' is merely a cliche we already know.
I know, I know, it's nitpicky, I admit that.
But, I am sitting here waiting for a Main Event draft and I'm touchy. :D

What is to follow is probably one of the worst of roto updates.

1. There is no real update.
2. It portrays false hope in the opening sentence.
3. Only to shoot it down with reality in the second sentence.
4. It states that the player is seeking a second opinion.
5. Then before that second opinion is in, projects that it isn't 'overly serious'.

'The Twins hope that Glen Perkins (shoulder) will be ready for activation from the disabled list when first eligible on April 26.
General manager Terry Ryan conceded that it could be a few days after that, but more will be known after a second opinion on the results of Perkins' MRI come back. The apparent good news is that it appears the shoulder strain Perkins is dealing with doesn't look to be overly serious. Kevin Jepsen will fill in as the Twins' closer while Perkins is on the shelf.

Completely meaningless for Perkins owners.
They know exactly the same as before this blurb. Like the Twins, Perkins owners are 'hoping' too.
Just like before this blurb.

Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

"Justin Bour is starting at first base and batting sixth for the Marlins in Friday's game versus the Braves.
It's been his regular spot so far this season. Bour and the Marlins are facing Williams Perez."

Nothing unusual to see here folks...move along! Just reporting what he normally does...
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
