Question for serious NFBC'ers
We are now well into our second week of the fantasy baseball season. Is it bad to have zero wins and a near 6 era with what on paper is seemingly a good pitching staff? Fernandez, Cole, Matz, Conley, Hammel ? The question is rhetorical.. I just needed to vent some misery...

Remain calm...

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Thanks Edwards... the other painful part of this game (and I know all experienced players deal with this) if you only play 1 or 2 teams is when guys you targeted, but didn't get, then get off to hot starts. I was all about Cano, Velasquez, Syndergaard and got none of them.. hopefully I can earn ONE win before week 2 is over!

Sounds like you did a poor job of "targeting" those players if u didn't get them
Re: Question for serious NFBC'ers
Not necessarily. he could've been team 1 and not even had syndy or cano avail at the 2-3 turn. happens to all of us.Gekko wrote:Sounds like you did a poor job of "targeting" those players if u didn't get them

Certainly possible; however very unlikely both were gone in the 2nd roundrkulaski wrote:Not necessarily. he could've been team 1 and not even had syndy or cano avail at the 2-3 turn. happens to all of us.Gekko wrote:Sounds like you did a poor job of "targeting" those players if u didn't get them

Re: Question for serious NFBC'ers
I don't necessarily agree this automatically is the case but in my case, but with Velasquez, it was. A player like this, if targeted, I could have gotten simply by reaching a round (or even 2) before he normally gets selected. I do it all the time with players I like. When I was about to take Velasquez I rolled the dice and took Grandal instead because he had fallen to a nice value spot and Velasquez didn't get back to me. I was picking at the 5th spot and didn't feel comfortable taking Cano in the second when I knew a massive pitcher run was going to suck up all the SP's from the late 2nd through the 3rd. In the 3rd round I was torn between Cole and Syndegaard. I loved Synd all winter and spring but at the last second thought the Met offense might be so bad it hurts his win totals and went with Cole. So far, looking like the wrong move but time will tell.Gekko wrote:Sounds like you did a poor job of "targeting" those players if u didn't get them

However, in related news. Though I had 3 starts yesterday I FINALLY got a win! Cole and Robbie ray pitched well but neither got a win. However, the great Jason Hammel did get one so I am on the board! Though obviously dead last in the category lol.

My apologies as I don't sugar coat, but it sounds like you had ample opportunities to take "your guys" but talked yourself out of it. no excuse for that other than a failure to execute.

Re: Question for serious NFBC'ers
Sounds like we have some of the same players. I loved that Cubbies game last night (I have Hammel). Jose Fernandez, Gerrit Cole...these guys should be good for 30 wins at the end of the day. Hammel too could be good for the mid teens given the Chicago juggernaut. Conley will be "solid"...a growth pitcher who will get you an adequate number of K's and has the advantage of playing in the same division as the Braves and Phillies. I do not have Matz but I have to tell you that start this week would scare the hell out of me. Not that one start makes a season and he could be gold the next time out. I just don't feel like we know enough about him. He will be up and down, like any young pitcher.Driver Love wrote:However, in related news. Though I had 3 starts yesterday I FINALLY got a win! Not sure who your other starters/options are, but the core looks good to me and at the end of the day you should get somewhere in the neighborhood of a 45% win rate.
I also target players, but nothing is etched in stone typically (I admit to a few man-crushes that seem to make it on my team...Cole Hamels, Brandon Crawford, Ellsbury, Samardizja). I like players in certain circumstances, but it usually comes down to what do I feel the team needs most at that particular position in the draft. I try not to have too many sacred cows.

Re: Question for serious NFBC'ers
No apologies necessary. I dig the commentary. Though I will differ in opinion some. In a snake draft, I think you can target guys and not get them. It is the nature of the beast. The original point I was making was just venting that is all. When guys you like/want get off to hot starts it can be frustrating when the guys you also wanted and got get off to slow starts. For instance, I liked Correa and Arenodo. Can't have them both. I liked Cole and Syndergaard. Can't have them both without severely reaching for one. Where I agree with you is later in the draft, I could and should have gotten Velasquez but Grandal fell to the 17th round and I passed on Velas to grab the last upside offensive catcher. The point I was making is watching Velasquez start off so hot it a thorn in the side. But without fantasy sports pain there is no fantasy sports euphoria. If it didn't sting, I wouldn't play. Though I already have guys who likely will be in ridiculous innings limits (Matz, Fernandez) so adding another guy in that situation in Velasquez would likely drive me nuts.Gekko wrote:My apologies as I don't sugar coat, but it sounds like you had ample opportunities to take "your guys" but talked yourself out of it. no excuse for that other than a failure to execute.

Thanks for the thoughts. It is strange in that I made some last minute changes in the middle of the draft. I really didn't want to take any SP's with innings limits. I hate how the teams now handle these pitchers. I find myself wondering if these guys pitch different knowing they are on inning limits. I wonder if they will pitch to contact more at times. I hate that they can get yanked early from games and end up costing the pitch wins. I struggled between Strasburg and Fernandez. I just loved Fernandez ultar explosive stuff and competitive fire and I think the Marlins team will be relatively good this year. I was sick about Matz's game. But I will not worry until after his next one because he had not pitched in a long time. It stung worse because I started Jungmann this week and he got blasted too. It does look like we have a number of the same guys. I agree with you about Cole, Fernandez, Hammel (great offense), conley (nice stuff)... I have Robbie Ray who lacks some in command but I like his stuff and motion. Left game with a lead last night but shockingly didn't get win lol.
I also targeted Hamels and did get him on my other team. I didn't take him on this team because I had Fernandez/Cole in rounds 2 and 3 so I had to work on offense where Hamels usually goes. Looks like we have a number of the same guys. I am now rooting for the Edwards kings organization...lol

Re: Question for serious NFBC'ers
Keep Madison Bumgarner away from Kiké Hernández. Kiké came into the game 7-13 against Madison with three doubles and a homer. He hit the first pitch of the game tonight well up the pavilion in left center and he took Bumgarner out the second time up as well. Hernandez career slash line against Bumgarner is now .600/.600/1.400. His lifetime BA against all LHP is .373.
EDIT: Now he doubles in two more. Unreal.
