Stat or Player of The Day
Stat or Player of The Day
I'll try and have a stat of the day that is relative to both baseball and our game.
Just a little thing to keep the Boards from withering.
27 players in baseball have hit 14 homers or more.
Unlike past year's, none of these players are among the top five in receiving bases on balls.
None.
You may notice that the consensus top three in our drafts made this list of 'walkers' who are not one of the 27 leaders.
Here are their Base on Balls/HR ratios.
Paul Goldschmidt 56/11
Bryce Harper 52/13
Jose Bautista 47/12
Mike Trout 42/13
Brandon Belt 41/8

Re: Stat For The Day
Today, it is not about a stat per se, but the unusual stats of a player loved by drafters.
Starling Marte was thought to be a power/speed guy when drafted.
Power/speed being the most popular sort of hitter in our hobby. Inviting enough, that drafters looked at him as a sterling second round choice.
Taken ahead of other power/speed fellows as George Springer and Charlie Blackmon.
The real season is always full of surprises. Marte has not been a power speed player. He has become a power/speed player.
His owners aren't complaining much.
If told on Flag Day, that their Starling Marte would have more stolen bases than Jose Altuve, with both being healthy all year, they would be ecstatic.
If asked who would steal and attempt the most steals before the year, the quick answer from fantasy playing folks would have been Dee Gordon and Billy Hamilton, not Jonathon Villar and Starling Marte.
But they are and here we are.
When a player outperforms an expected skill as Marte has done with his speed, his owners pat themselves on the back for being smart enough to draft him.
At the same time, there is a void.
Marte's owners drafted him for a power/speed combination. They expected both. Instead, their peanut butter and jelly sandwich is dominated by the jelly.
Peanut butter cravings, a bitch.
Marte has five home runs.
Less homers than Freddy Galvis.
His one homer every 47 at bats matches the power of James Loney.
Using the word 'power' and James Loney in the same sentence is like using the word 'savvy' and Yasiel Puig in the same sentence.David Freese, Coco Crisp, and Joey Rickard have five home runs.
Marte clearly, is running with the wrong crowd here.
His owners were not looking for Rickardian power.
They were looking for a Marte party. But Marte forgot the punch.
Instead, it looks like Marte is courting George Jetson's daughter, Judy.
Converting to Judyism in fantasy baseball is both a blessing and curse.
Stolen bases are less of a concern of a category. There is peace of mind in seeing a player counted on for two/three steals a week.
Bliss.
The curse is looking at the power demise. Especially in a player drafted in the second round.
It jumps off the page.
19 stolen bases and 23 rbi!
WHAT?
How could a fella in the middle of a perennial pennant contending team have only 23 rbi?
Especially with a cool name like Starling?
Do we call him Judy (pronounced Ju Day) Marte?
Marte and the unusual power/speed numbers doesn't stop there.
He is hitting .332 and walked only seven times.
Take that, Sabrs!
Fantasy players want their speed guys to walk. More opportunities for stolen bases.
Marte's owners know that he has 20, or even 30 home run power, latent in his athletic build.
If wishing for walks, they may be left regretting what they wished for.
Marte is putting up Dee Gordon numbers.
Second round.
Great average.
Steals.
Runs.
Running wild on the bases, running behind in homers and stolen bases.
Unlike Gordon, his owners have hope that the latent power manifests itself over the second half of the season.
Although Marte's numbers make him second round worthy, it is playing havoc with his owners expectations and roster construction.

Re: Stat For The Day
best 1st round pick? a pitcher. best second round picks- might be 4 pitchers- mad bum, sale, jake and mad max. you can always get hitting later and off the wire like pearce, duval, nunez and mazara. but you knew that already.
Re: Stat For The Day
There was once a fantasy untruth that 'doubles turn to home runs'. Like most lies it was met with rolled eyes and hesitation by those in our hobby. For some reason, some folks think of doubles as balls hit near or off the wall.
'Almost home runs'.
Gap shots and balls down each line not considered.
Nick Markakis has averaged a remarkable 35 doubles a year over his 11 Major League seasons.
38 doubles last year.
Markakis has become fantasy irrelevant. His doubles turned to singles.
Markakis led my 2007 Main Event team to a title.
His .300/97/23/112/18 line was a delight.
Yep, Markakis used to hit for power and run.
Every year in his American League career he had double digit home runs.
Then, he was traded to Atlanta.
His power drained so badly in Atlanta that a decision was made to build a new park.
I kid.
In two years, Markakis has hit four measly home runs for the Braves.
Many reasons can be given.
National League pitching.
Facing new pitchers.
A bigger ball park.
A club with a different philosophy than the Orioles.
He quit eating Wheaties.
It could be a mix of none, some, or all of these reasons. Fantasy players don't care.
They see non-production and move on.
Markakis has joined players like Adeiny Hechevaria and Jordy Mercer in being everyday players who hold little relevance, even in deep NFBC Leagues.
Seen frequently on FAAB available lists.
Ramon Flores, Juan Centeno, and Kenta Maeda also have a homer this year.
Mercer beating Markakis in four of five roto categories.
Markakis has hit rock bottom in fantasy terms.
For some, there is hope.
Afterall, Markakis ranks 21st in doubles.

Five game hit streaks are fortunate for players.
If that five game hit streak is a streak of two hits or more in each game, it doubles the pleasure.
In five straight starts, Ichiro Suzuki has had multiple hits.
Ichiro is the oldest player sivce Carl Yastrzemski had such a streak in 1983, 33 years ago.
For fantasy purposes, it is the five straight 'starts' that keeps Ichiro owned in less than 30% of our Main Event teams.
We crave at bats.
Many, many at bats.
Ichiro is a part timer.
He has only started half his team's games this month despite his hot streak.
The under performing Giancarlo Stanton has provided Ichiro with more starts than most anticipated.
We all know that Ichiro's window of opportunity could close with a few hits from Stanton.
Still, timing is everything for the fantasy enthusiast.
Since June 1, Ichiro has scored (9) one more run than Jonathon Villar and has as many stolen bases (4) as Villar.
Before the season, a lot of fans doubted that Ichiro could get the 65 hits needed to join the 3,000 club.
Now, he has made that look like child's play.
And so easy to root for.
21 hits to go for Ichiro.
Is Ichiro fantasy relevant?
You tell me.
Here is his line and a few other players line for comparison.
Ichiro Suzuki (126 at bats) .349/21/0/9/6
Alcides Escobar (279 at bats) .244/21/0/17/10
Yasiel Puig (186 at bats) .237/21/5/20/4
Ben Revere (141 at bats) .213/17/1/12/5

CC Sabathia has an 0.82 ERA over his last seven starts. The only other pitcher to have a lower ERA over seven starts this year is Clayton Kershaw.
And yes, I just used CC Sabathia and Clayton Kershaw in the same sentence!
There are many different philosophies for Sabathia's resurgence.
His owners don't care.
They've banked four Wins and his low ERA over the last seven starts.
Sabathia has lost 300 baseball pounds over his 16 year career (Writers would annually report a loss of 20 pounds each Spring Training).
Yet, still weighs 300 pounds.
A peculiar oddity...as all oddities tend to be.
This is the best stretch of starts for Sabathia in eight years.
In 2008, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for half a season.
He put the Brewers on his back that season.
In 17 games and 130 innings, Sabathia had this incredible line for Milwaukee...1.65/11/128/1.000
This season, Sabathia has given up just one homer to right handed hitters.
One in 213 at bats.
In May and June, all hitters are hitting below the Mendoza line vs. Sabathia.
Max Scherzer has allowed 17 home runs this season.
Sabathia, just two.
Both, solo shots.
Sabathia is limiting damage.
As fantasy owners, we appreciate that.

So if I had these guys on my team out of the draft...

Would I be winning the unwritten eleventh stat category "Combined Team Weight" and twelfth category "Combined Team Age" and still be in the hunt otherwise?
Who am I missing?

Rotoworld-
'Jon Jay finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles Friday against the Nationals.
Jay is first in the NL and third in the majors with 24 doubles. He might be a nice little trade piece for the Padres next month, especially since there never seem to be enough leadoff hitters to go around.'
Ugh.
John Jay is a leadoff man because of his current team's dynamics. The Padres are a mediocre team. Before landing with the Padres, Jay was a fourth outfielder on a perennial above average offensive team, the St Louis Cardinals.
Jay is a shooting star in our fantasy universe. He seems to be doing well in real baseball this year. For our purposes, he has two homers and two stolen bases. No matter what we get from other offensive categories, two homers and two stolen bases do not feed fantasy appetites.
In the past, doubles were considered a power number.
Now, very debateable.
The top two doubles hitters are legitimate power hitters in David Ortiz and Manny Machado.
After them, any player with 20 or more doubles does not have more than 10 homers.
Here is the list of top doubles hitters with their homers.
David Ortiz 29/18
Manny Machado 26/17
John Jay 24/2
Greg Polanco 22/9
Jose Altuve 21/10
Gerardo Parra 20/5
Matt Carpenter 20/10
Xander Bogaerts 20/8
Travis Shaw 20/7
Todd Frazier has the oddity of having the second most home runs in baseball with 19, while only hitting five doubles.
Of qualifying hitters, five doubles is the least in baseball.
In seasonal fantasy baseball, Jay's doubles hurts his owners. Although one base closer to scoring run, his doubles virtually rob his owners of their chance for a stolen base. An art that has, for the most part, escaped Jay this season.
Jay ranks 70th in runs scored. 150th in rbi.
His doubles are just doubles.
Again for our purposes, Jay has joined Martin Prado in being a batting average (.298) one trick pony.
If traded, I suspect that Jay would lose leadoff privleges.
And maybe even wrongly be platooned.
If Jay has shown anything this year, it is that he is more than a fourth outfielder or platooned outfielder.
He is hitting a whopping .354 vs. lefties this year.
For some reason, Managers don't see stats like that and assume that a lefty/lefty matchup is bad medicine.
It is not a one year wonder of a split for Jay.
Jay's lifetime average vs. lefties is .289
His lifetime average is .288
Jay's owners may be better off with a trade.
Although he would probably lose his leadoff job, that job entails leading off for a mediocre club.
If traded, it would lead to probable less doubles in a smaller arena and maybe more stolen bases and possibly more homers.
Stats his owners, crave.

A doubles hitter does not foreshadow a HR hitter.
On the other side of the coin, a HR hitter almost always produces a lot of doubles.
So you are keen to observe Frazier's low doubles total.
According to the NFBC stats, Frazier is 'on pace' for 45 HR's and 12 2B's.
In MLB history, players have hit 45 or more HR's 137 times.
Only 9 of those 137 times have resulted in players with less than 20 doubles.
Only once with less than 15.
In 1964 Harmon Killebrew hit 49 HR's with just 11 doubles.
I don't think I'd ever compare Frazier to Killebrew, but in this one case, he's very Killer like.

Sorry Mom.
This is about James Shields.
Shields has been historically bad.
So bad, the White Sox are hoping to kick his son out of the locker room, in hopes Shields quits.
Where is Drake LaRoche when you need him?
No pitcher had given up seven runs before the fourth inning in three straight starts since 1894.
1894!
Not to be tethered to a fella from 1894 and wanting the record for himself, Shields made it four straight starts on Saturday.
No pitcher has ever done that.
Until 'Big Game' James.
'Big Game' is the worst nickname in the world to describe Shields.
Other monickers come to mind.
James 'No Game' Shields
James 'Big Shame' Shields
James 'Big, Lame' Shields
James 'Lower the' Shields
James 'Panty' Shields
Shields ERA over his four Starts is over 25.00
36 qualified Major League Starters have given up less (30 or fewer) earned runs this year than Shields has allowed over his last four starts.
In June, batters are hitting, wait for it, ....wait..... .480 vs. Shields
Shields is honing his newfound craft.
It only took 53 pitches for him to give up eight earned runs on Saturday.
It took him twice as many pitches in his previous outing to give up just seven runs.
With that well-rested arm, Shields is efficient and capable enough to give up 13, maybe 14 runs in his next outing.
Easy enough when seeing that he goes to Fenway Park to face the Red Sox.
The White Sox gave the Padres Erik Johnson and Fernando Tatis Jr. for the right to pay Shields a little of his hefty contract.
A pitcher that gives up more 'runs' than Taco Bell.
A pitcher that gives up more 'hits' than Snoop Dog.
James Shields has just been plain bad.
But, I'll bet he's a nice fella.
Are you happy now, Mom?

Re: Stat or Player of The Day
Yesterday was Fathers Day.
Did you bet on the Braves?
Did you Daily players have Freddie Freeman and Julio Teheran in your lineups?
You should have.
Freeman had four hits yesterday.
Per usual for him on Fathers Day.
Freeman is 12-16 on Fathers Day.
But, that pales a little in comparison to Teheran.
Teheran one-hit the Mets yesterday. A complete game shutout.
Last year, he also faced the Mets on Fathers Day. He one-hit the Metropolitans for seven innings in that outing.
Teheran has thrown 22 innings on Fathers Day in all.
Hasn't given up a run on the day.
While we spent the off season studying and drafting, Teheran had loftier goals in mind.
He asked his girlfriend to marry him.
The former 'Miss Swimsuit USA', said "Yes".
It's a good bet the Marriage willl not be on Fathers Day.

Has anyone said anything about Marcell Ozuna all season on these boards?
Hitting .325 and on pace for better than 35/100/100 in a pitcher's park with a fairly weak lineup.

Something particular about the Colorado vs Miami game, final score 5-3, all 8 runs scored on solo Home Runs.
Go ahead, make my day...

Re: Stat or Player of The Day
We look at some players and lie to ourselves. We'll tell ourselves that a player is not doing that bad.
In just saying that a player is not doing 'that bad', we know he is doing badly.
I'm going to pick on a player who is not doing 'that bad'...but is.
Andrew McCutchen
McCutchen was thought to be a bargain for those drafting near the end of the first round.
A swell pick (adp 14) to pair up with another talented player like Betts, or Gordon, or Bryant.
McCutchen will not be a first round player next year.
And probably not a second rounder either.
Like Adam Jones, he has played himself out of that realm.
Both McCutchen and Jones were five category goodness a couple of short years ago.
Now, both are hitting in the .240's and although both show speed in the outfield, it's no longer much of a thought on the bases.
Jones with one stolen base, McCutchen, two.
McCutchen's stolen bases have fallen from 27 in 2013, to 18 in 2014, to 11 in 2015, to now, two.
Ron Shandler said that once displaying a skill, that player owns it.
I've always thought of that as a partial truth.
The truth being that McCutchen owns the speed skill.
Just not the stolen base skills any longer.
The want, having to work in conjunction with the skill set.
Teammate's Starling Marte (20), Josh Harrison (12), and Gregory Polanco (9) have not lost interest in stealing bases.
McCutchen's stolen base total, sandwiched between teammaes Francisco Cervelli, a catcher on the disabled list with three stolen bases, and Jung Ho Kang, a player coming back from a torn miniscus and fractured tibia with one stolen base.
In May, McCutchen not even bothering to attempt a stolen base.
Speed hasn't been McCutchen's only problem.
If the Pirates were to roll out these players and positions...
C- Cervelli
1B- Jaso
2B- Harrison
3B- Kang
SS- Mercer
LF- Marte
CF- McCutchen
RF- Polanco
P- Liriano
They often have a lineup similar to this. If they were to let batting average dictate who bats from first to ninth, McCutchen would be batting ninth.
This, from a lifetime .294 hitter.
Full contact is a problem.
So is contact, period.
McCutchen is well on his way to a seasonal lifetime high in strike outs.
In 270 at bats this year, he has 10 homers and 28 rbi.
Teammate Matt Joyce in 95 at bats has seven homers and 23 rbi.
With respect duly intact in April, he drew 14 walks from pitchers. Only nine in May. Six this month.
McCutchen was the Pirate to avoid. The hitter to not let hurt another team.
Now, the pitcher WANTS him at the plate.
McCutchen has had one home run during June. Three extra base hits.
For years, Andrew McCutchen has been hands down, the Pirates best player.
Next year, he may and probably will be the third outfielder drafted from his own team onto fantasy rosters.

Wait...Wait...Wait...so, drawing walks is bad and NOT drawing walks is bad too? I couldn't be anymore surprised than if I saw Dan Kenyon disdain a bag of Dorito's in favor of a bag of sliced carrots!DOUGHBOYS wrote: With respect duly intact in April, he drew 14 walks from pitchers. Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Not saying that walks are bad or good in this context.

Moreso, illustrating that pitchers are no longer afraid to throw strikes to McCutchen.

Re: Stat or Player of The Day
For one day (Chris Sale winning his twelfth game yesterday), Clayton Kershaw led or was tied in every possible roto category related to starting pitching.
Clayton Kershaw receives a lot of superlatives, but there isn't much more a player can do for our game.
Can you imagine a hitter leading all five categories?
Or even four?
Fantasy gold!
Mickey Mantle led four roto catagories in 1956.
He also finished tied for 14th in stolen bases, in a year that saw just 15 players with double digit steals.
Mantle's line was an incredible .353/132/52/130/10
Only one player was within 20 points of his batting average (Ted Williams)
Only one player was within 20 runs of him (Frank Robinson)
Only one player was within 13 home runs of him (Duke Snider)
Only one player was within 20 rbi of him (Al Kaline)
A truly dominant year for a Triple Crown.
Going back to Kershaw...
Fittingly, the last pitcher to lead all four roto categories was a Dodger and a player of Mantle's era.
Sandy Koufax.

Re: Stat or Player of The Day
Trivia question-
One team has not had a Starter throw eight innings in a game this year.
Which team is it?
Answer at bottom of post.
Clayton Kershaw is grabbing all the pitching headlines as he should this year. But there is another pitcher who has been cuite good this year.
Johnny Cueto.
Cueto's line is 109ip/099whip/86k/2.06
Along with Madison Bumgarner, they form the best 1-2 punch in baseball.
They say that a quality start is a bad stat for great pitchers (afterall, it is a 4.50 E.R.A), in 15 starts Cueto has blown by and bettered quality start status 13 times.
His 11-1 record matches that of Kershaw.
On the NFBC player rater (no rater being truly accurate, but what else can we use?), Cueto ranks third among pitchers behind Kershaw and Jake Arrieta. Teammate Bumgarner sixth.
The Giants have won 13 of Cueto's 15 starts.
Cueto was a little bit of a question mark during draft season. He was spectacular last season with the Reds.
Then, traded to the Royals, he turned pedestrian.
Although he did throw a complete game two hitter vs. the Mets in last year's World Series.
This year, Cueto has thrown eight innings in five of his 15 starts.
Which brings us back to the trivia question.
What team is the only team who hasn't had a Starter go eight innings this year?
Cueto's former team, the World Champion Kansas City Royals.

Let's climb the statistical surprise ladder...
Manny Machado has 0 stolen bases this year after swiping 20 last year.
Kevin Gausman got his number 1 victory today.
Drew Smyly has won 2 games this year. Zero at home.
David Wright leads the Mets in stolen bases with 3. Teammate Jacob deGrom has 3 Wins.
The Cubs are good, sure, but the Cards are only 4 games over .500 The Pirates 4 games under .500
Despite being suspended for 30 games, Hector Rondon has only thrown 5 more innings than Aroldis Chapman, Chapman has 15 Saves. Rondon 13.
Bryce Harper had nine homers the first three weeks of the season. 6 since.
On April 28, Annabelle Sanchez won a game while allowing seven walks. Clayton Kershaw has walked 7 batters this year.
The Atlanta Braves have scored as many as 8 runs, four times this year. They're 2-2 in those games.
Some baseball and fantasy fans are fooled by Jed Lowrie's .292 batting average. Lowrie has the least amount of extra base hits among qualified hitters, 9. Only one of those, a home run.
Wil Myers has 10 stolen bases. It matches speedsters Mike Trout, Alcides Escobar, and Elvis Andrus. 10 is a career high for Myers.
Just because...
Kirk Nieuwinhuis has no BABIP vs. Max Scherzer. In eight at bats vs. Scherzer, he has struck out seven times and dinged Scherzer for a home run.
Volquez owners don't want to hear this.
Edison Volquez is the first pitcher to give up 12 runs in a live-era game while recording only three outs.
His owners walk up song by Devo, 'WHIP it good'. An 11.00 WHIP for his nights 'work'.
Billy Burns has struck out less than any other qualifying hitter in baseball.
Billy Burns is also the only qualifying batter to not register a home run.
Chicks could care less about not striking out.
Burns 13/10, also joins Billy Hamilton 17/11 and Jarrod Dyson 12/8 in having more stolen bases than rbi.
Almost halfway through the season. There is no player on a pace for 30/30.
The closest...
Mookie Betts 16/12
Jose Altuve 12/18
Ian Desmond 12/13
Mike Trout 14/10
And surprise....
Melvin Upton 11/17
40 players have been hit by a pitch at least five times this year.
Carlos Gonzlez has been hit by a pitch five times over the last five years
Tonight, three game winner Jake deGrom vs. three game winner, Julio Teheran.
Both having E.R.A.'s under 3.00
With a 5.24 E.R.A., Jered Weaver has six Wins.
Manny Machado has 0 stolen bases this year after swiping 20 last year.
