Roger Clemens sucks.

Post by sportsbettingman » Fri Feb 16, 2007 3:26 pm

I think Roger Clemens should hang 'em up!

He's such an ego...he pretty much invents a new way to close out a career. He doesn't have the health or the balls to grind through spring training like all those older SP before him...and wants all the glory of playing and being a ringer for a team that HE chooses to help once they've already put themselves into position to reach the post-season WITHOUT him!

He has nothing to lose...makes damn near the same money...and claims all the glory should the team he decides to sign with go far into the post season.

I think he's a prima-dona, and can screw off. Either get into shape, and help a squad make the post season...or get the hell out of baseball.

It's not his fault owners throw tens of millions of dollars at him for 4 months of playing a kids game.

All that being said...he still sucks

I don't think he's lazy or out of shape. He probably works his butt off staying in shape all year. However, I do think he is an arrogant SOB who loves to ride in on a white horse after most of the work is already done. Worse yet, there are teams that will pay him more than most pitchers make for a full year of blood, sweat, and tears just so he can pitch for half a season and maybe win a post season game or two. Sad to say this, but my Yankees are one of them.

Just makes him a nice mid/late gamble. I don't have to love him - especially if I can use the turd to make a few bucks. Think Rog wants to take his wife and all of his K kids to Treasure Island in March instead of Spring Training. One morning, he'll awake to find his hat was swiped and replaced with the interlocking NY again. Then it will be clear. Heck, when the chump tells me he is 80% - it makes it easy. The door is open.

I worked late last night - had to unwind and that gave me the forum. ;) Three more weeks, can't wait.

I do not want him to play again, but for selfish reasons. I was at his last game of '06 in Atlanta (whose fans, by the way, treated him very well with a standing ovation after he was pulled...he came out for the traditional tip of the hat). If he does not play again, I can bore my grand kids with the story that he was the second hall of fame pitcher I saw in their last game (Phil Niekro was the other).

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

~Lance So Lance, if you're a fan of the team that gets him and you know he only has 4 months of solid pitching in that 44 year old body, would you rather have him for the 1st 4 months or the last?

Yo Coop...

It's OK...you're from his home state...you can go ahead and admit you are a fan of rent-a-players.

Baseball at it's best...I guess. No team loyalty...no city loyalty...no fan loyalty.

Sounds like a new trend to winding up a career/padding career stats that should catch on.

Lance,

I'll admit, if my team has a shot for the playoffs and one guy could make the difference, then yeah I like the rent a player approach. I remember when we got The Unit a few years ago. It was exciting getting some national press for a change. And he did get us to the playoffs where we couldn't hit a lick and lost to the Padres. I still remember the game Kevin Brown threw. I think that was the best stuff I ever saw.

But all of this misses the point of your post. "That Clemons sucks for not going to Spring Training." After his 20+ seasons, even if you don't like the guy, you have to admit he's earned the right to miss the first few months. Especially since his numbers are still so good.

And I hear what you're saying about loyalty. I guess it kind of sucks being in a small market city where you can't afford to keep your best players. But blaming the players is like blaming Stallone for taking his millions to make Rambo 4.

It very well might have been this lack of loyalty that caused fantasy sports to grow like it did.

ESPN says that Clemens is now 80-20 against returning this year. I doubt the odds are that high, but it's interesting that he's leaning towards retirement once again.

Is is possible that Brett Favre and Roger Clemens are actually the same person? Both aggravate me every single off-season as they love being the lead story on Sportscenter.

With all due respect, the city loyalty, etc., is almost gone as it is. You can count on one hand the number of players in the past 10 years who have stayed on one team (stars anyways). What difference does it make if he plays 4 months or the whole season. The bulk of these players have loyalty only unto themselves. Hence, free agency. If these guys can make more money somewhere else, they'll go faster than you can shake a finger. It's all about the money anymore. Which is why in my estimation the Steelers of the 70's were the last greatest TEAM in pro football. That was a team that was built from the ground up....no outside players. Sadly, it will never be that way again. That being said, since none of these fantasy players give a rats a** about any of us, if Clemens was that extra edge to get you into the money, you'd be a fool not to pick him up.
