2017 NFBC Draft Dates & Times

It's time to kick off the 2017 NFBC season with our Schedule of Events. Once again we are returning to three different cities, the 14th straight year that the NFBC is hosting live drafts and auctions in New York, Las Vegas and Chicago. Nobody else does that!

We are finalizing deals with hotels as we speak, but we should have those soon. New York Hilton and Sheraton Northbrook are looking good, while we're still talking with our favorite Las Vegas hotel. Stay tuned, but all is looking good.

As Andy said, with Easter no longer being on the New York drafting weekend we are hosting three days of drafts: Friday-Sunday instead of Thursday-Saturday. I will talk with Tom about including a second option for the Main in New York, maybe on that Sunday morning. We still have dates for the Mains Online. I'll break down the draft dates by location soon if that helps.

I would prefer Chicago be on the second weekend- unless that is easter weekend- which neither is this year. mike

With Easter out of the equation, it's possible that all three cities would want the final weekend, but that would be tough on us. We need all hands on deck in Las Vegas for that Second Weekend. We can discuss further, but right now we need to stagger the cities to handle all of the live events.

A few quick comments regarding the NYC schedule, consistent with what I emailed to you:
1. I think there would be continued demand for Thursday night contests (as in recent years), although I now understand that NYC used to run Friday through Sunday.
2. I think Sunday afternoon is a tough time to start contests for folks that have to travel home from NYC on Sunday. I see that both Vegas weekends start contests at 10 am on Sunday, yet the NYC contests are scheduled to start at 1 pm. If no contests are going to be added to Thursday evening, any chance of moving a contest or two to Sunday morning? Speaking only for myself, I'd be interested in a Thursday night and/or Sunday morning contest, but almost certainly will pass on any Sunday afternoon contests.

Andy - Not exactly. I think both Mike and me would like a second Main Event offering, but not necessarily on Friday (which already is a pretty full day of contests). I think Mike's post was looking to continue the Thursday night Main Event we've done the last two years. That would be my first choice as well, although I also should be able to pull off a Sunday morning contest (but not one starting in the afternoon). Thanks.

Thursday's not an option in New York, guys. Sorry. We are able to return to the Hilton next year but they do not have space available on Thursday. If we were to schedule a second Main Event date it would have to be on Sunday afternoon. If that's something people would be interested in we can definitely do that.

We created the Thursday option in prior years due to the Easter scheduling. There were people who couldn't draft on Saturday in the Main Event due to Easter obligations so Thursday night worked out for them so we gave them that option. But Easter isn't an issue this year so that's why we are back with the Friday through Sunday schedule that we have had in New York in previous years there.

Again, if a Sunday Main Event is appealing we'll definitely put that on the schedule. We'd love to get more things going on the final day there so just let us know and we'll add that to the list. But unfortunately, Thursday isn't an option in NY.

I think it's a great idea to start Sunday earlier. No reason to start those at 1 pm. We'll talk it through, but moving that to a 10 am start on Sunday makes sense. That allows everyone to get out of the city at a good time. We'll definitely look at that.

Tom will look to add a second Main time in New York if that helps. There is another convention there on Thursday and the following weekend that has all of the space, so we're stuck on Friday-Sunday if we're going to stay at the New York Hilton. Sorry, but let's work out this schedule to make it the best possible lineup we can get in New York. Thanks for the feedback.

If/when I ever attend a live event my first choice would be Chicago.
Whether the event is weekend 1 or weekend 2 would have a great deal of bearing on the decision though. Having a better idea of the players getting cut or injured during the final week of spring training means a lot.

The hotel has space for both weekends, so that's doable. However, Chicago is already a tough spot to fill and losing some owners to Las Vegas may make it even tougher to fill. Can we fill a Chicago auction and two Mains on second weekend if some owners who always do Chicago are in Las Vegas? We're taking a bit of a chance by returning to Chicago so that's my concern.

I will post all of our contest Rules today and get the discussion rolling on all of our events. Sorry for the delay this year but the sale was a factor in that. Now that we're able to announce that SportsHub Technologies is our new ownership group we can budget through them and get this season started.

This is the hardest season I've had as far as projecting team totals for all of our contests is concerned and setting our guaranteed prizes. The reason mainly is because of these state-by-state laws and not knowing if we'd be exempting more states or just paying the licensing fees and taxes. I feel better about the fact that SportsHub has already applied for licenses in many of these states and that we'll do all we can to be in as many of these states as possible. That allowed us to plan for growth again this year.

We'll talk about how we're dealing with New York's taxes and Missouri's taxes and others soon. Honestly we've discussed this but haven't finalized what we're going to do. There's no good way to deal with this. Those states are now taxing revenue coming in before prizes and taxing customers on their winnings after they're paid. The additional costs to us will be in the tens of thousands of dollars, but we still don't know the exact totals, what new states will pass laws before the season and other factors.
