The 'Value' Game...again

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue Feb 21, 2017 5:59 am

One of the reasons I am so passionate about our game is because of the layers of mental masturbation it brings us,
During draft season, we are constantly thinking of ways to draft a player or players. It is like we were 16 again, only then, sex was the passion.

We play a game, in drafting, before the games really begin. If beating ADP or popular opinion, many call it 'getting value'.
'Value' is the most over used word in our hobby. Listen to a fantasy radio show or listen to somebody babble about players.
It's all about 'value', 'value', 'value'.
The funny thing about 'value' is that. for the most part, it is not set in our game. At least for most players. Mike Trout has a set 'value' for almost every single drafter. After him, we don't see players with a set 'value' again until we see players like Alex Reyes, Yordani Ventura, Jose Fernandez, or David Ortiz in NFBC defaults. Even there, I have seen Reyes, Ventura, and Ortiz drafted.
So, Fernandez does have a set 'value' for drafters. Everybody between Trout and Fernandez is fluid.

Despite this fluidity, we are bombarded by folks who know 'value'. The truth is, they don't know shit.
Folks say 'value' to sound smart.
"You shouldn't take Paul Goldschmidt with the fourth pick because Jose Altuve has more 'value'"
Who says?
The person who states it?
The Baseball Forecaster?
ADP?
This is part of our draft day game. Not the seasonal game where value actually forms.
If the drafter believes in his heart of hearts that Goldy is the selection ahead of Altuve, he should draft Goldy.
Most won't.
The draft day game gives Altuve more 'value'. Ugh.

When the season begins, we don't give a rats ass WHERE we drafted a player.
WHO we drafted becomes the new game.
During the season last year, if we had Jonathon Villar on our roster, we patted ourselves on the back.
We didn't care if we got 'value' for him or not.
We didn't care if we under drafted him or over drafted him.
We were just damned glad to have him.
The draft day game of 'value', over.
Real value comes to town!
Same with Jason Heyward.
"Why, oh why did I draft that bum?!", we say to ourselves.
Not caring about the 'value' received in Heyward's selection.
Real value kicked Heyward's owners in the ass.

Two years ago, drafters felt sound 'value' in drafting Andrew McCutchen in the first round
Wrong.
But, he was sure to return first round numbers.
Wrong.
A year later, McCutchen had sure fire 'value' in the third round.
Wrong.
But, he was sure to bounce back.
Wrong.
And this year, McCutchen has sure fire 'value' in the fifth round.
I heard it just yesterday.
This guy could be right or wrong.
What I do know is that McCutchen doesn't have any more 'value' than those being drafted around him.
Not yet.

What is stupid is a drafter saying they got 'value' because they beat adp by two rounds. They'll say this before the season begins.
There is NO 'VALUE' there!
He simply beat adp.
Big deal.
If Heyward drafters beat adp by two rounds last year, did they get 'value'.?
HELL NO!
THEY GOT PAIN!

I drated Jose Peraza earlier in the year in the ninth or tenth round. Now, he is being drafted in the sixth or seventh round.
Did I get 'value'?
HELL NO!
We haven't seen Peraza hardly play at all.
He may be brittle. He may stay at the end of the lineup and hit .240
He may blow.
All I have is Peraza on my roster.
Just like those that took him in the sixth or seventh round.
IF and only if I love Peraza (I don't at his new price, which means I don't love him THAT much), I would allow myself to say that I got a bargain.
To me, a bargain is not 'value'.
A bargain is treasuring a player and getting him at your price or below.
For me, it's like seeing Doritos on sale.
I would have bought them anyway, but now it comes cheaper.
But, like 'value', bargains can kick your ass once the season begins.
The player we thought so highly of, could tank.

In the end, if you believe in Rhys Hoskins or Ryon Healy, then draft Rhys Hoskins and Ryon Healy.
Don't let others say there is a 'value' to them.
Stick to your guns.
You set your own 'value' with players.
Don't let others say there is higher 'value' elsewhere.
I think less and less of an individual, the more and more they use the word.
It makes them sound so smart, while being darned dumb.
The true value of a player is not realized till play begins.
That will never change.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
