Stuff and Junk

It could be said that Marwin Gonzalez is the most valuable player in NFBC leagues.
Not only does Gonzalez have a line of .321/47/18/60/5,
but he is also the first and only player to qualify at every offensive position, other than Catcher.
Gonzalez will probably keep his 1B/3B/SS/OF status for drafts next year, making him a possible top 100 pick.
His ADP this year?
439
We're not that smart.

Rookies became a 'thing' in 1957 as far as Elias Stats having tracked them in baseball.
Last night, the Mets gave up a home run to Manuel Margot. The night before, it was rookie Allen Cordoba. The night before that, Hunter Renfroe.
In fact, the Mets have allowed a rookie to hit a homer in six straight games.
An NL record since rookie stats were kept.
Haniger, Gamel, and Heredia are on tap tonight.
What is amazing is that the AL record for consecutive games allowing a rookie to hit home runs in a game is eight.
Set THIS YEAR by the Baltimore Orioles.
A good year for the Rooks!

Just a piece of trivia...
The first ever 'Rookie of the Year' was Jackie Robinson in 1947.
And the oldest ROY still currently playing came from the year 1999.
Carlos Beltran.
The oldest pairing of current players that were ROY.
Ichiro Suzuki and Albert Pujols, 2001.
Some of the best ROY pairings...

1967- Rod Carew and Tom Seaver
1977- Eddie Murray and Andre Dawson
2001- Ichiro and Pujols
2012- Mike Trout and Bryce Harper
2015- Carlos Correa and Kris Bryant

Kyle Schwarber is the cover boy for modern baseball.
He was used in the leadoff spot for most of the first half of 2017.
Power hitters are replacing single hitters at the tops of lineups across baseball.
And Schwarber is anything but a singles hitter.
Since May 1, Schwarber has hit nine singles, nine doubles, one triple, and 14 home runs.
Homers have folks idolize, singles make the batting average rise.

SABRtoothed writers do not like to take in anything but numbers.
They discount 'bulldogedness' or 'clutch' performances.
So, let's put this in a numbers form so that these folks can understand how a pitcher can 'bear down'.
Chris Sale has faced 84 batters with runners in scoring position.
He has struck out 43 of them.
Only one batter has hit a homer off Sale with RISP.

The media loves hitting streaks.
Most fans don't care unless the number of games hit around 25. Less than half of Joe DiMaggio's streak.
Right now, Jose Altuve has an 18 game hitting streak.
Here are a couple of things even more astounding about Altuve...
Altuve has only NOT gotten a hit in a game 18 times.
He has only once gone two games in a row, without getting a hit ONCE this season.

73 players have more rbi than Aaron Judge in July.

Jose Altuve is hitting .494 for July. Seriously.

JD Martinez only has 21 hits for the month. But 21 rbi.

Paul DeJong has eight July homers.
He has 27 homers in just 363 minor and major league at bats this year.

Who has the most home runs off right handed pitching this year?
Nope, not Stanton.
Nope, not Judge.
Nope, not a left handed swinger.
It is Khris Davis.
Davis should be platooned when facing lefties this year.
He hits .179 with just two homers vs. southpaws.
Against right handed pitchers, a .257 batting average and 26 home runs.

No qualified hitter in baseball has a .400 batting average vs right handed pitchers.
Only 10 batters have even a .300 batting average vs. righties. (Making platoons overblown)
BUT, six batters with at least 50 at bats are hitting .400 vs. lefties.
And one of them is left handed.
Here's the list...

JD Martinez- .452
Justin Turner- .430
Nolan Arenado- .429
Gerardo Parra- .418
Avisail Garcia- .409
Justin Smoak- .402

Arenado leads baseball with 10 homers off of port siders.
Lefty Anthony Rizzo has nine.

If talking with baseball fans, they'll tell you that Buster Posey is having a great year.
Not so fast. At least in fantasy terms.
His position makes Posey a yearly top 100 draft pick.
His current numbers of .328/44/11/44/1 could be compared to a non-catcher like Chris Taylor who has the line of
.320/52/12/47/12
But even comparing apples to apples, Posey is pedestrian.
JT Realmuto's .307/44/11/42/5 line is very similar to Posey's and came at a lot better price than Posey's number one catcher status.
The effects of the position may be having an effect on Posey.
He will be 31 next season.
His homers have gone from 22 to 19 to 14 to 11 in 2017.
His RBI from 95 to 80 to 44 in four months this season.
Dollars to donuts though, Posey will again be the first catcher selected in most drafts next year.
Like his first base counterpart, Miguel Cabrera, past seasonal stats are hard to ignore.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

One more.....

Several teams have had a record seven players who have hit 20 homers or more during a season.
The Houston Astros have a chance to shatter that record.
This year, the Astros have two players (Springer and Correa) who already have 20 homers.
They also have eight more players with double digit homers.
And a hitter with nine home runs.
To say this lineup runs deep with power would be a Captain Obvious statement.

And it helps that they have the best baseball player ever to play in Effingham County, GA. :)
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
