NFBC Records: 2004-2017

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Oct 09, 2017 10:06 am

We now have 14 full seasons in the books for our five national championships in the NFBC. We keep track of the top teams in each of the 10 statistical categories for each season and compare them to other seasons. These aren't the top 14 overall teams in each statistical category for the NFBC Main Event; instead they are the leaders in each statistical category for each of the 14 seasons. And so it goes for the other contests as well.

This is a great way to compare the trends throughout the years. For instance, in several of our contests this year we set a new record in Home Runs and Runs. We also saw the lowest number of Stolen Bases and Saves this past year in all of the national contests. Two years ago, we saw pitching records across the board and this year the power numbers stand out.

Enjoy and we'll highlight the new leaders from 2017's contests in our next post:

Just look at the top Home Run totals from the last four Main Events:

2014 - 292
2015 - 307
2016 - 355
2017 - 390

That's a pretty big increase in just a few years. Is it really just a change in batting approach and "launch angles" or are we in the era of steroid baseballs? It will be a challenge to figure out what targets to aim at come next March.

Mike, here's the HR totals from the last four years in Major League Baseball:

2017 - 6,105
2016 - 5,610
2015 - 4,909
2014 - 4,186

That's more than just launch angles, if you ask me. That's INSANITY. The game has totally changed and in my opinion not for the better. I guess "Chicks Dig the Long Ball" again.

Wow, that's crazy. Roughly a 50% increase in home runs over three years. Seems like it wasn't that long ago when folks were complaining that pitching was dominating and MLB needed to make the games more exciting. (I was not one of them.) In the past, I have tended not to spend much time in my draft preparations thinking about how overall trends in the game were or were not changing. Maybe I should, but damned if I know today whether this "trend" is likely to continue next year or revert back in the other direction. Lots to think about between now and March! :D

In 2011, 78 hitters struck out 100 times or more.

In 2014, 117 hitters struck out 100 times or more.

In 2017, 140 hitters struck out 100 times or more.

The game has changed most definitely.

Edit- Scarier (and worse for baseball fans, who like to see action)...
Over one third of all at bats, this year, resulted in a ball NOT being put in play.

Re-Edit- Sacrifice hits are at an all-time low.
Intentional walks are near bottom standards over the last four years.
Nobody has stolen 75 bases in over 10 years.
Only six players had 30 stolen bases this year.
29 players had 20 stolen bases.
Of those 29, 20 had double digit homers.
Players that did not have 10 homers, such as RDavis, Revere, Dyson, and Ellsbury played significantly less games than counterparts.
Big time speedsters, Hamilton, Gordon, Turner the exceptions.
Most sluggers with speed, do not waste their time stealing bases.
Mike Trout, Paul Goldschmidt, noted exceptions.
Hit and runs...moving runners over...sacrifices....smallball....all dinosaurs.
To the contrary, defensive indifference and stolen bases without a throw are on the rise...

It is Baseball's version of 'Texas Hold 'Em'
And they can't wait to go 'All-in'.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
