AL LABR Auction Tonight

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Sat Mar 03, 2007 5:54 am

Okay, I've escaped 22 inches of snow in Wisconsin and finally found the land of sunshine and baseball. John Zaleski and I are preparing for the AL auction league now and have our targeted players ready to go. Tonight after Hooter's and a private party, we'll list the top dollar values on this thread for all to see. Stay tuned, although also don't wait up for us. :D Should be fun.

We're going to see the Royals-Rangers now after seeing the Brewers-Giants yesterday. We didn't learn anything from yesterday's game as I was too busy enjoying the MGDs and the sight of green grass. Scouting report on today's game will come tomorrow.

Anyway, it's good to be in the Valley of the Sun and away from snow, although I have this distinct feeling my wife isn't happy about it. :D Hopefully all of that snow will melt in a few weeks.

Bring on the AL Auction. We're ready.

Don't root for it to melt all at once or you could have a flood like at our house. Tons of melting snow mixed in with torretial downpour and a stuffed up drainage system make for an ugly situation.

Greg - If you can, also post a couple of your $1 picks too. I found them useful last year.

Thanks and enjoy the trip!

OK.... Greg and I are back after an interesting LABR draft to say the least.

First off, Perry did a fantastic job on running the auction. Major kudos there.

Many a plan went out the window as Vlad went first for $35, Crawford for $38, and Johan for $39.

Almost every star player in the top 40 nominated went $2-9 over what we expected. There were picks where we had to join in or be left out.

I feel sorry for anyone that will use these numbers for their draft. The stars went way to high, and many end gamers went way too high because two guys had plenty to spend at the end.

So Greg and I want to have a little contest here and see how many of you can correctly guess what we paid for each player.

There was one guy at the end that had way too much money and as able to overspend on too many players and that hurt us at MI and C#2, but those are not hard positions to replace so we weren't hurt as bad as some others that have 1500 less AB's.

Hi guys - Very good looking ofense. Did you plan ahead not to get a named starter? Just wondering if that's how it played out or if you planned that in advance.

Thanks - Pete

p L Hudson 1 Eddie, you're a smart man. You have seven players right on the nuts and you have six players off by $1. We had to overpay for one early star as the top stars were going for top value and we were left behind with another player who also still had $260. It was jump in or miss out on a top star. Still, we think we came back and saved a few dollars on other players quickly after that. We'll see how it plays out.

Three teams punted saves, including us, which made the extra dollars go towards hitting. That made each hitter go for top value. It was a tough, tough draft, but overall I thought players went for around projected values. We still need help in pitching and a big break (like having Philip Hughes put up some numbers for the Yankees this year), but we'll be competitive. Now onto the NL.

Why not mention all the Yankees or White Sox we have?

What circumstances?

I love the way fantasy owners take a bit of news and squeeze the crap out of it when he says this happens every year to him, like most pitchers.

We wanted other SS's, but they all went too high, so we'll take Cabrera again before that position tanks.

Kotchman was an end gamer. He's not worth $7. It was him or Norton, and Norton went for $9. The rest were all $1 CI, and the rest of our needs were $1/2 RP. He'll be worth every penny if he can stay healthy. We saw him tag lefty Capuano for a HR, and drill two line drives Sunday.

The other funny thing on Kotch is that we wanted Grudz at MI for those $7 and someone bid higher. Then he does on DL next day. Last year, Grudz at $5 was one of our best buys with 85r and .297.

Greg had Matthews at $21. We got him for $13. We would have gone to $15, maybe 17.

As for Shields, he always delivers more than $7 and we get 8w and 97k and 4-5 saves, which moved us from 1 SV pt to 4 sv pts as three others bagged saves.

Mathis? We didn't want to start a #2 C that could hurt us. We want him to get sent down. That could have been anyone.

We weren't too worried about it, but 20 of the first 22 noms were star players that went higher than we wanted to spend. We knew we had to jump in and pay for probably the last impact player in Sizemore, or get stuck paying a lot for lesser players that a few teams wound up doing and those teams suck.

With a lot of $$ out of the draft early, we knew we could get a bargain and make it up, and we did on next player with Thome at $20, so that actually worked out nicely.

We had Sizemore and Thome for 33-24 before the draft and paid 38-20, so the end result worked out, which is why we went the extra buck TWICE on Sizemore. The team with A Rod was bidding against us.

It was a tough draft as a ton of money went out early, and three teams had nice chunks at the end.

Every team wound up with some major holes, I'm just glad ours was at C2 and MI.

Because you don't live in NY or CHI, so I can't rile you by making you look like a homer for drafting those guys. :D
LOL... It's really funny when Greg bids on a Brewer also. Everyone chimes in with the homer stuff and he doesn't even watch them. We use it to our advantage. C.Hart went for $15 this year

The Los Angeles Times reports that "it appears Weaver will miss at least one start to begin the season," ... this is how it started with Mark Prior last year.
Ha! We'll see. It seems to me about 80% of all DL stints start with the manager saying, "he might miss a couple of games, we're not worried about it".

Has anyone been able to find any more LABR results on the web? I only found ESPN.com and Sandlot Shrink's teams...
