I focused too hard on building an incredible infield (maybe a rookie mistake, I don't know) and forgoing the outfield until it was too late.
I did get away from my initial strategy of focusing on offense early as it is much more predictable and safer than pitching.
My draft management was pretty bad, looking back, after my first 10 picks it was hard to recover.
I am definitely listening and learning. It may not sound like it makes sense raising V-Mart's value because of Mauer's injury, it would if Mauer was done for the year, but you're right, it didn't make that much sense to pick him early based on that logic, or lackthereof.
I respect your opinions so far. It would be interesting to check out other teams to see how I fared.
On a side note, I think, even with bad draft management, my player assessments are right on. I think a top 5 finish this year should prove that.
Next year, I will do a better job at trying to get the best value at each draft spot and try to jump for players I happen to like.
Thanks for the input guys.
Glad to see I made some good picks, the season will determine how I did. If your player assesments are right on and you do not do well, I would not get too discouraged. The things we are talking about can be learned, player evaluation is kind of a you have it or you don't over the long haul.
Good luck-
2 unsolicited pieces of advice for FAAB to a newbie
1) I criticized Todd Zola 2 years ago for bidding 100 bucks more than the next guy on John Patterson. Todd was right and I was wrong- while Todd outbid the field by a lot, the price he paid for Patterson turned out to be a bargain.
My point if it fills a need- bid to win it don't worry about looking silly.
2) Spend your FAAB money in the first half, get the guys on your roster who will help sooner, August and September call ups do not help as much as you will think, and most importantly someone in your league will stash FAAB away and they are probably going to outbid you for the guy you covet in August anyway.
Good rule of thumb to me Big Dog is 750 spent by the all star break.
You probably have no idea how much to bid on a player. The biggest bids you will generally see will be about 300 dollars and those are few and far between. Last year Cole Hamels went for more but he is the outlier.
Newly named closers generally cost the most-
If you are high in the standings when you make a bid, bid $2 for the bottom barrell players not $1, because you will lose the tie if you both bid $1 b/c you are higher in the standings.
I would also encourage you to study the first week bids in FAAB across all leagues for a starting point.
Keep in mind no theory or rule on FAAB money is true across the board because all leagues are very different with regards to FAAB.
Good luck- IMO horrible draft but still a lot can be fixed. Picture you drafted a bad team last year but added Jered Weaver, Dan Uggla, David Ross, Nick Markakis, and Adrian Gonzalez to it by managing FAAB properly. A lot more than you think can still be corrected.
My first year I found 5 guys who could help me on FAAB, my second I found one and the difference in the standings showed it.

It may not sound like it makes sense raising V-Mart's value because of Mauer's injury, it would if Mauer was done for the year Nope, I agree with Doughboys. Mauer could have a career ending injury tomorrow (God forbid, he's on my team) and your team will not be any better than it is today. You will gain an advantage over that one owner but that would be true no matter who your catcher was or what round you took him in. Theoretically a lot of catching injuries would make the pool smaller and all catchers would move up as people would be afraid to get stuck with the dregs, but taking out one catcher hardly does that.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

Chest gave good suggestions on faab there. I agree that it is good to top load your faab bids, but don't blow your money either. While closers and premium pitchers from the minors go for a lot, most players can be guarenteed at $30-40. Last year I just didn't see a lot that I wanted to bid on and had a lot of money at the end. And that was fine, I ended up picking up Derrek Lee, but, yeah, the guys in April will be 6 times more valuable if you use them for 6 months. It is interesting to note that most bids surprise you by going uncontested. When I think of my best faabs Felipe Lopez (05), Cuddyer, Durham, Glavine, the most I spent was probably $40, and they were mostly uncontested. I like to throw a lot against the wall and see what sticks rather than save every penny for a Cloe Hamels. You can find a lot of value that way.
On a similar topic, Chest, this year I went with two closers. We'll have to see how much faab I waste fishing for closers. Drafting a 3rd closer to me is like drafting a few hundred faab.

Big Dog,
I have no idea if you listen to a word I say- but I will offer you one more thought. If you take that team to 8th place don't trick yourself in to saying those guys killed my draft but I got it to 8th place. We killed that draft because you have made 1st place so impossible to get to with so many holes.
I highly doubt unless you have some unlucky starting pitching injuries and Benitez and Putz both flame out that you will finish in 14th or 15th. Hard to finish that low with the good starting pitching you have. I have not seen all the drafts in your league but I personally would rate that draft so low b/c it has such a very low percentage of producing a winner. I will take the team that has a 25% chance of finishing top 3 and bottom 3 vs the team that has a one percent chance at the top, and a 90% chance of not finishing last any day of the week. Make sense?

Some excellent advice for the Big Dog, Chest, and maybe more than he deserved. He could take heart from God Loves You's satellite winner LY,which had an absolutely abyssmal OF out of the gate and still won. That team did have Howard and H. Ramirez on it however. And I don't see those kind of high risk, high reward plays on this Big Dog team. Good Luck to the Big Dog and to all those who took part in the satellites!!

Thanks for the help Chest.
With your help and well, brutal critique, it has given me extra motivation to prove you and others wrong.
I do listen when you have constructive criticism. I'm pretty good about plucking difference makers from the waiver wire. I'm gonna have to retool that outfield. Other than that (granted, a big problem) I should not have trouble finishing in the top 5.
In fact. I GUARANTEE IT! Top 5 finish. Write it down.

Let's see. I have a dominant infield and dominant pitching staff.
I retool that outfield and WHALLA!
I come out the winner.
I have seen posts like "no chance to win" and "no high risk/high reward guys"
I think I had a splendid draft. If you compared my team to the others, I think you would agree.
I don't make sexy picks, I just make the best ones based on everything I know, and it's not all about the numbers. You guys input these numbers into some analysis machine to figure out if you did well in a draft. I for one don't need Shandler or some "guru" telling me I did well.
I WILL be top 5 and I will prove to you I can play this game about as well as anybody.
LET THE SEASON BEGIN!

I did a draft today and UPTON went in the 11th round, now that CANTU has been sent to the minors and UPTON will start. This is a huge break for the BIG DOG, upton COULD STEAL 40 TO 50 bases. Also i agree with Aurilla being a good pick , the 3 positions will help.Rich Hill in the 10th isnt early , i took him there my self in the main , and his 200 K'S.Hawpe is one of my sleeper picks this year , i can see a 300 hitter with 30 homers.Just a few of the players DOG drafted that i liked. The Kent pick was way to early , but a 25 homer 90 rbi, 290 bavg will fix.I took Kent in the Ultimate, but much later.

Thanks Eddie Jag - I appreciate your comments.
I admit I took Kent too early, but if you saw our draft, it was nuts. Some teams have 3 or 4 3rd baseman/2nd baseman.
I could have waited until later to go for a Kendrick or Kinsler but I felt at that time that having an infield of V-Mart, D-Lee, Jeter and Kent would be dominant - (I didn't want to mention the Blalock pick) I hope Ron Washington sparks a fire under his ass.
I didn't realize I would have such a difficult time finding outfield help late in the draft....rookie mistake.
The Alou pick was very bad I must admit. Just a stupid pick. Grasping at straws.
It's nice to hear some positive comments after my team got bashed so hard. I do appreciate all the honest critiques though, good or bad.

You mean Chest's team that graded out as the 15th best team in the most recent analysis, or the team that most of the best players in this event have applauded. Or Chest's team that got your 1st round pick in the late 2nd round. Putting the two next to each other just proves you are an idiot..
I tried to help you- took about 20 minutes of my time the other day to do it, the responses after that include good advice Chest or I he did not deserve that level of advice. I tried to help you b/c that draft literally said you are a complete moron when it comes to fantasy baseball- bjoak was making fun of you and you are so stupid that you thanked him for it.
In two days you will begin to see how bad that team is and you will do one of two things 1) change your screen name and run and hide again 2) Have a pocket full of excuses.

Chest, you are hilarious.
You can't take it when somebody critiques your team.
You have this "I'm better than everybody" mentality and it comes out in your posts.
I personally feel you have a lot to learn. Having some success in the NFBC doesn't mean anything. Success over a couple seasons doesn't mean you're the greatest thing to hit fantasy baseball.
The proof is in the pudding. Let the season unfold and we'll see how our teams compare.
If you only understood that the only way to succeed in fantasy baseball is to think a little bit differently than everybody else (lesson in life), you might be successful. The fact that more people think your "sexy" picks are better will give more proof to this concept as might team whips yours across the diamond.
Good luck.......you're gonna need it.

...so Chest's success over several seasons in the NFBC means nothing, but if you beat him this season, that seems to mean plenty? Please explain.

Chest's comment "you are a guy who got his azz handed to him the first time at this level. Go out prove us wrong or at worst learn from it and be better next year."
How about this?
If I don't end up top 5 in my league, I will not post in 2008.
No bet.
When I do end up top 5, and you end up ranking worse, it is YOU who got his azz handed to him.
I will not lose. You don't know me from anything. Fantasy baseball is something I live.
I'd say good luck, but it's over. You will not beat me. I WILL put you in your place, which is near last.
Just watch and maybe you'll learn a couple things.
