Unavailable Free Agents This Week
Okay, the first week of FAAB is this week for our live events and if you scan your lists you'll notice that some veterans aren't listed at this point. Guys who are NOT on 40-man rosters at this time are not in the free agent pool for your leagues, but they will be added once their MLB teams officially add them to their 25-man rosters.
Some guys I can think of in that situation right now include:
Dustin Hermanson
Sammy Sosa
Al Reyes
Jon Danks
All of those guys could have been selected on Draft Day, but once D-Day is over a player must be on an MLB roster to be picked up via free agency. Right now Sammy Sosa is no different than a Class A prospect; he can't be picked up until he reaches the majors. So please watch your free agent lists through Sunday to make sure the player you're looking for is available.
Just an FYI: Free agent lists are closed off two hours before each Sunday night deadline. That means that no new players will be added after 4 p.m. EST. There are times during the season when teams promote minor-leaguers to the majors on Sunday morning and we then add them to the FAAB pool once that is official with MLB. But we don't want you staring at your computer all day Sunday and thus set a deadline two hours before the FAAB deadline for all new additions. If they're not there at 4:01 p.m. EST on Sunday, then they won't be there when FAAB runs two hours later.
Good luck everyone.
If you have any FAAB questions, feel free to ask them here or contact Tom or me personally.

Okay, here's a quick update to the plans:
We'll now add these guys (plus Dmitri Young) to your FAAB lists, but realize that if you bid on them and they DON'T make MLB teams by Sunday we'll pull those players out of your free agent pool. This is the only time this year we'll assume that guys are making MLB rosters, but it's an easier solution than making everyone wait until the weekend to place bids on these guys.
So the plan is to add these guys to all of the free agent pools today and keep them in until they are sent to the minors (if that happens). If they are demoted, then they'll be treated like any other undrafted player who doesn't make an MLB team. Good luck everyone.

It's still 7:00pm EST correct Greg ? That would make the cutoff 5:00 pm EST

I've heard of beer goggles, but never fantasy baseball goggles! Classic stuff!
This does remind me of a suggestion that someone had during the football season -- is there any way to create a mobile web version of the STATS site? If not, perhaps this can be put in the R&D budget for 2008.

Q [/QUOTE]With the mobile phone, activations are pretty simple. However, entering free agent bids is particularly troublesome. An optimized version (such as the one Google has with google.com/pda) would help immensely.

~Lance I wish it was history. We're still working on that, but I have to personally allow each new message board owner access to the site as we receive over 60 porn e-mail spams a day. I think we have a way to prevent this in the future as David Dodds of footballguys.com told me a new trick. We don't want you guys seeing those porn e-mails, but just for good measure Tom and I are checking each and every one out!!

Greg,
The rules are clear-- a player must be on a major league roster by 5pm on Sunday to be available for FAAB. If you change the rule for the first FAAB period you risk changing the outcome of the season for some teams. If an exception is granted for these 4/5 or 6 players will exceptions be granted for players during the season?
One of reasons I play the NFBC is for consistent rules ( no trading ) and no making up rules as the season progresses. When are Dl'd players Dl'd? When ESPN says he 's going on the DL or when MLB declares a team has put a player on the DL.
You can argue-- Well everyone will have an equal shot at these players-- true, but having an extra week to evaluate my team (did some of my players lose out on a roster spot?) and to bid accordingly for free agents(especially since those are the rules in place at the time of the draft-- if someone wanted Hermanson, Sosa, Danks, etc they had 30 ROUNDS to chose them).
The teams that chose these players are losing an advantage(possibly?) they drafted, while other teams are being handed(rules adjustment)a potential asset by the NFBC.
Dangerous Slippery Slope -- Please reconsider
By the way I did not draft any of these players and would benefit from having them in the pool-- but in the future, that may not be the case-- and I do expect rules to be rules.

I reread Greg's post and he states they need to make the MLB roster by Sunday ( does that imply 5PM Sunday?) if yes, then okay. So, in summary, if any of these players are not officially added to the MLB rosters by 5pm EST on Sunday, 4/1,-- then they will be pulled from the FAAB pools. Is stats aware of this? will Greg or Tom monitor and post on the bulletin board which players are good to go? I just don't want to see players added to MLB teams after 5pm Sunday and having been allowed into our FAAB pool. I would assume since 30 of the 32 teams don't play on Sunday, they won't make their final roster changes until Monday( saves them the MLB players food money for the one day). The newspapers will all have the final cuts on Sunday, but the teams won't make them official with MLB until Monday(after our FAAB).
Should be interesting

Michael Wow Michael, I think you're talking about a different slope than I am. All I did this week was allow guys like Sosa, Dmitri Young and Dustin Hermanson to be available to be bid on starting yesterday and if they make their MLB teams those bids will go through. You are correct that Tom, myself and STATS will watch the official lists this week. I just don't want to add these guys to the free agent pool on Sunday morning and have 2/3rds of the people upset that they didn't get a chance to bid on them before the weekend.
I think the guys we're talking about have a good chance to make MLB teams. If they don't, all of the bids will be rescinded. As for the official lists, we'll watch those on Sunday and act accordingly.

That's exactly why I did it this week for this week. If the Reds surprisingly cut Hermanson before Sunday, he will be left out of the FAAB pool. If they officially added him on Sunday morning and we added him to every league's FAAB pool then, it just wouldn't seem fair. That's all we're doing with this. I'm surprised with the response we got from it, but we'll act accordingly.

Greg,
I guess the slippery slope was a little harsh and I do apologize for that statement.
I did ask a direct question which still has not been clearly answered.
Does the player have to be officially added to the 25 man roster through MLB by 5pm EST on Sunday 4/1/07 to be part of final FAAB reports?
Many of these players will be added on Sunday Night after 5pm and Monday morning (4/2), which SHOULD make all FAAB bids for these players null and void. As an example, 2 yrs ago Emil Brown was named the starter in RF for KC, but was not added until Monday(after FAAB). I asked where he was for free agent bidding and was told he was not officially added to the 25 man roster and hence would be available the following week.
Greg, you state in your response, if Hermanson is cut then he will be taken out of the FAAB pool and bids rescinded-- the question is --Is he on the 25 man roster before 5pm on Sunday as per MLB--not will he be on the team to start the season. Technical, but as happened with Emil Brown, what the NFBC rules state.
Thank you in advance for clarification.

Again - a thankless job you have at times. Amazes me that no matter which direction you turn somebody will have an issue. Don't expect a response - but I feel your pain.
Like what you did with those weeks players that will make teams and fully understand the ramifications if said players don't make the cut. Appreciate the common sense approach to these Free Agents as it will make life easier.

Sack,
It's common sense to add the players earlier in the week for bidding purposes, under the assumption they are added to the 25 Man MLB roster by 5pm EST on Sunday. If they are not added, then THOSE players need to be removed, as per NFBC rules.
What if Hermanson gets 3 saves in the first week and (or even one save) and he wasn't added until after the 5pm deadline( say Monday at 12:01am) and the 1, 2, or 3 saves determines a league outcome or even worse an overall champion. Is that okay with you?
I am only looking for a clarification, that the 5pm 25 man MLB deadline will be enforced by Greg as per NFBC rules.

Appreciate the common sense approach to these Free Agents as it will make life easier. Be careful what you wish for, I've learned that. I thought this was the dream job. I thought a Blackberry was a helpful tool. Now I can't escape either device!!
There is no escape anymore. Sometimes I wish I were just a player in this mess!!

Michael Michael, I do not know what time MLB teams officially submit their 25-man rosters this week. I also don't have the same recollection about Emil Brown on that situation, but I'm getting old. I will work with STATS on Sunday on these players and I guess do our best to find out if they are part of these MLB rosters. If not, we'll have to handle this before 7 p.m. EST.
