Draft Recap--Best/Late Worst/Early Pick

Post by Return of the Aces » Wed Mar 24, 2004 2:52 pm

We have a few more days to evaluate and re-evaluate our draft results. Many have posted their teams to the Board. I am curious as to who you think was your best and worst picks as far as draft position. My best-late pick was Zach Day in Round 27 and my worst-early pick was Adam LaRoche in Round 17 (I liked 1-16).

I was very happy with my draft overall and I didn't make too many reaches I don't think at 13th. My best pick was Edgar Martinez in round 17. Talk about no respect!! Also, I got Bonds with my first pick at 13 and I thought that was unbelievable considering many of the guys picked before him are currently injured(nomar, prior etc...)My worst pick was Brian Jordan in round 25 because I needed a fifth outfielder and there was noone decent left. If he hits .275 20 70 I'll be pleased.

If he stays healthy the whole year, lack of steroids doesn't affect his hitting and he pops 60 HR... well, THEN you got a steal ;)

I'm penciling in Bonds for 50 homers now that the death of his dad is not a distraction. Along with that high batting average you gotta love it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I had the 8th pick in my draft and had no difficulty passing on Bonds. I took Prior, even with his injury, since his shoulder is currently not the problem. Bonds is clearly the long-term bigger health risk. He is a well-conditioned athlete, with or without steriods. But, if it is true that he has been taking steroids that could hasten his physical decline, which at age 39 could be a concern. If he gets 400+ at bats, he should exceed 40+ homers. But, I am more inclined to think that 1999 is the best indicator for this year, when he had 355 at bats and hit 34 homers. Good luck and the season will show which prognastication comes true.

Bonds home runs will be down this year because with the lineup around him nobody will pitch to him!

Our worst early pick was Fullmer in the 7th. As for late picks, I am thinking Suppan, although I don't remember exactly what round we got him in. He does not get many K's, but keeps the ball down, and has a good D (and O) behind him.

It sure would be interesting to find out each player's average draft position, as well as the earliest and latest each player was taken.

I'd have to say my best picks were Schilling at #24, Zito at #85, and Colon at #115.

My worst was probably Lofton in the 10th round. It was a reach, but I needed speed at that point.

Bonds is trully a great player but, in a roto format that does not include on base percentage the fact that he gets walked so much dilutes the impact of his high batting average....and because there is rarily anyone on base when they do pitch to him...his rbi totals and run totals are low for the number of extra base hits he gets....

My best pick was Zito at 77.....My worst pick was Mark McLemore...late....he got injured the day I drafted him...but, I considered him probably waiver matieral when I drafted him so I was not exactly crushed

Wow, what a bunch of downers on bonds (no pun intended with the drug coorelation) Here is how I figure it. Bonds will bat 4th this year. Lets assume that the first three guys make an out and Bonds comes up as the leadoff hitter in the 2nd inning. Since there is noone on base and every pitcher knows that walking the leadoff hitter is suicide, Bonds will get more quality pitches to hit. They will figure a long ball is only one run. Also, if one of those guys happens to get on you can't just give Bonds a free pass and put a runner into scoring position. Furthermore, please raise your hand if you think both Durham and Alfonso won't have better years than last. If durham gets on more and alfonso provides the protection like he did in the 2nd half of last yr than the offense will support bonds. One last comment, steroids are still LEGAL in baseball if you have forgotten  :D

One last observation. Prior, Pedro, Schilling, Wood, Arod, Soriano, Pujols, Beltran, Vlad, Helton, Nomar, Manny were all gone before I picked. Not in that order obviously but Bonds seemed logical to me. Why take Tejada when he will bat atleast 40 points less and Sheffield is great but he is not Bonds. Too early for Boone and Gagne and Halladay. I snagged Magglio with my second pick at 18. Just food for thought :D

I wasn't going to take Bonds regardless this year, but if he plays 150 games I think most will be happy with where they took him. As far as my best and worst, I would have to say getting Hampton in the 18th was my best and taking Dmitri Young in the 10th was my worst.

I think most would criticize our 1 and 2 picks of Renteria and Crawford, but that was the plan... we still ended up with six #1 or #2 starting pitchers, taking our first starter in Round 10. We'll see if they deserve the #1 or #2 spot in their respective rotations as the season unfolds. Draft recap at http://sportsbuff.com/journal/

It's hard to say when to take Bonds. I had the 15th pick, and took Nomar and Bonds. I would have taken Thome but I like Bonds Avg. Also it is hard to see Bonds not in the top 5 for HR's. I like him because he can be in the top 10 in runs, HR's, RBI's, and Avg. But with pick 15 I didn't think any solid 40 HR guys would come back to me at pick 45. I think I had a lot of good picks I really like Crawford in the 4th (46 overall) and Ramon Ortiz the last pick of round 27. I didn't like Mauer who was the last pick in round 11. Our draft was weird Catchers went very high. 20 were drafted in the first 14 rounds

Best pick- we got Brian Roberts in round 19 (last pick of round) and worst pick - Franklyn German round 20 (1st pick). Especially after today.

We were on auto draft untill round 10 but I think our worst pick was Loaiza in round 6 and the best pick was Maddux in round 10.

I felt good about getting:

Brian Giles at 66th overall, Luis Gonzalez at 156th, Russ Ortiz at 216th, and Trot Nixon at 246th (if he comes back sooner rather than later)

bad picks (or waaay to early anyway)

Coco Crisp at (*gasp*) at 186th

and Tike Redman at 235th

.... obviously I was on a desperate search for speed ;)

J.F.K.- Taking Tike Redman with the 235th pick will turn out to be a fantastic pick, don't sell yourself short there. I also love B Giles at 66th.

Best pick either Giambi (50th pick and fifth in the fourth round) or Brian Roberts (281st pick or 11th in the 19th round). Worst is Tim Worrell (341st pick or fifth in the 24th round) while Speier, Felix Rodriguez and a ton of other MR with better chance at closing at some time in the future were available.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
