NFBC Owner Passes Away

I want to send our condolensces today to Doug McCready's family as Doug passed away last week. Doug was an original member of the NFBC family who had a stroke two days before this year's draft. He passed away a week later and we send our thoughts to his wife and family in Danville, California.

Many of you know Doug as a VERY passionate Oakland A's fan and MLB fan. I first met Doug at Ron Shandler's Arizona Fall League Symposium and Doug was there each fall with his A's cap on. He joined our main event in 2004 and later added a mixed auction league team, bringing some friends over to the competition as well, including Richard Van Fleet. Everyone who knew Doug knew that he enjoyed baseball as much as anyone around.

Doug was so looking forward to this year's NFBC event, but sometimes the good Lord has other plans. I know a lot of you guys knew Doug and probably didn't even hear that Doug had a stroke two weeks ago, so I wanted to let everyone know. Richard said that last Friday they had a "Celebration of Life" event for Doug in Oakland and I can only imagine that there were some good baseball stories that were told there.

Enjoy the game from the box seats Doug as you have a better view than we do. We'll hook up for the "Big Game" down the road.

My best wishes go out to Doug's family although I did not know him. From all that is said he seemed like a great person.

Doug was a good competitor, we faced off on several occassions. All the best to his family.

Thanks Greg and all for all the kind and thoughtful words about Doug. For all for us who were fortunate enough to have known Dizz (as we used to call him) he will surely be missed.

Yes Dizz introduced many of us to our first Fantasy Baseball Leagues. It was back in 1984 when Doug started our 1st fantasy baseball league. Dizz (Commish for Life) and 9 of us air traffic controllers at Bay Approach in Oakland Ca. It was nothing like today--we used the USA Today stats--did not have the luxury of having a web-site to run our stats for us. It was every two weeks that we actually knew our place in the standings and by the time we received them they were old news. Wow have times have changed.

As Greg mentioned Dizz loved his baseball mainly the Oakland A's. I know I have never met a bigger more knowledgeable fan of the game. Doug was one of those type of guys who kept score of every game while the rest of us were raising hell and drinking the beers. We were able attend games at some of the many ballbarks across the country. Fenway and Wrigley were his favorite parks.

When it came to fantasy baseball Dizz was IMHO a little bit over the top. It was not uncommon for him to somehow juggle 7-15 teams a year.

I competed against Doug for several years in the now defunct Bill James Fantasy Baseball. We corresponded occasionally via e-mail and watched how each other's teams were doing in the NFBC. My condolences to Doug's family and friends.

Sad to read this news. I'd like to echo KJ's thoughts in that I also had the chance to compete against Doug in a few leagues. Always a gentleman, thoughts and prayers to his family and to those he shared these games with as part of the NFBC family.
