twice-weekly moves revisted

Post by Cooperstown » Tue May 22, 2007 7:21 am

Up until this week you would have counted me as someone who likes the Friday DL rule but is not favorable to the “twice-weekly-moves” rule. But I've changed my tune.

The primary reason most people involved with the NFBC are against an open 2nd transaction day on Friday is that it takes extra computer time to review your bench players and see if any of them will out-perform any players on your active roster. It is evident that people w/ jobs that allow them computer access on Friday before game time have an advantage. I am one of those that agreed with this.

So what changed?

For the same reason as above, Monday’s suck for us workaholics. I wonder how many others vacillate between players before the Monday deadline. I do. Just yesterday I had to decide if Chris Young, who has 7 games this week, is healthy enough to play, or will Erick Aybar get enough playing time w/ Kendrick likely to come back this week.

If we had a 2nd transaction period on Friday, then the people w/ less computer access would actually have an advantage, or at least less of a disadvantage, over those that have the ability to surf on Monday, just before the deadline.

The fact that there was no additional information available even if I had been at the computer all day yesterday doesn’t change the fact that something might have come out at 4:00 p.m., and other Young or Aybar owners with computer access would have had an advantage. The 2nd transaction period makes it more equal, not less equal.

Let’s initiate a 2nd transaction period for 2008 and keep me from speeding home to get on the Internet before the deadline. The roads will be safer.

Why does the NFBC not offer both formats - leagues that have once a week changes and leagues that have twice a week changes? Then a participant could sign up in the type of league they are more comfortable with.

Personally, I would even be interested in a league that had daily changes.

I like the set up the way it is. You can keep an eye on free agents all week, do some harder research on Sunday and place your bids. Then on Sunday night you can assess who you got off the wire and can put in your lineup. If a guy goes down early in the week you can replace him mid-way so that you're not totally screwed. Seems pretty well set up to me.

I've played in a lot of daily leagues before this year. Here's what I like about the NFBC.....now I spend my evenings watching baseball instead of glued to my computer to see if any players got hurt so that I can snap up their replacements before anyone else. Doing that didn't make me like fantasy baseball any more and it didn't make me a better fantasy baseball owner....it just took away my freedom in order to compete. Now, if I need to go out on a Thursday night I can do so without worrying about what could happen if K-Rod gets hurt and I'm not the first one to find out and pick up Scot Shields...for example. I was driving home a few weeks ago when the BJ Ryan injury came on the radio. Instead of rushing home to pick up Jason Frasor, I stopped for dinner instead. Then, I bid on Frasor by 7pm Sunday (didn't get him/thank God!)

By the way, with everything that I have read on the boards the past few days, I just wanted to say that this is my first year using the NFFC and NFBC and I couldn't be happier with the product and service. I have no plans to try any other internet services in the future.

You're not by a computer on Monday to see that Toronto just pulled Frasor from the CL role. Oops, you could have put in Shields, or Broxton, or someone like that. Too late for you to swap Frasor for another pitcher and your stuck for 7 days. But all the other Frasor owners were by their computer and made the change before the deadline. Wouldn't you like to be able to resv Frasor at least by Friday? That's all I'm saying. I'm clearly not suggesting daily moves.

I see what you mean with the Frasor on Monday thing, and I think that we are in agreement against daily moves. All I was saying is that having Frasor in my lineup instead of Broxton for a week would suck, but not near as much as missing out on a great player for the rest of the season because you didn't get to him first. By the way, as a Jays fan and fantasy player I have heard way to much about Frasor this year! When you hear a lot about guys like Frasor...that's a pretty sure sign that the Jays aren't doing as well as they should.

How about we give each team 2 "mulligans" per season. With this mulligan the requesting team can e-mail Greg or Tom and request a "mulligan roster change" at any time but they can only do this twice per year. The benefit here is that it would help a team surprised by a sudden roster change or injury and the strategy would be in each team determining when to use your so called mulligan. This would not allow you to pick up a free agent but would only allow you to take a player from your bench and slide him to your active roster. So this gives you 2 emergency roster changes per season but still does not move us to daily or twice a week roster changes. In addition, I would also like us to go to a 28 man roster so that more FA's are available and the teams that are off to rocky starts have a better chance to get back in the race. The two items here are certainly not tied together in any way but I just thought I would take advantage of my post to bring up both topics.

Something tells me it would be harder to administer this than an open 2nd weekly roster move. But maybe Greg has some free time on his hands.
