Post by Tom Kessenich » Mon Jun 25, 2007 2:41 am

Congratulations to Zac Staples, whose Worst Team Ever team in Tampa League 1 topped the NFBC field last week with 3,190 points.

Big weeks from Ryan Braun (.429-1-7), Frank Thomas (.348-3-9), Alex Gordon (.400) and Manny Ramirez (.381-1-3) led the way offensively. Yovani Gallardo and Joe Blanton teamed up for 23 strikeouts while Johan Santana had two wins and Jose Valverde posted two saves.

For finishing first last week Zac wins a Kei Igawa Official Interleague baseball signed in Kanji courtesy of Upper Deck Authenticated. Congratulations again to Zac and good luck to everyone in the NFBC this week.

Way to go Zac! Congratulations!
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Zac Staples Wins Week 12 Prize

It’s been a rough year so far in Tampa League 1 for Zac Staples. His team has suffered through injuries and sub-par performances and has been mired in last place.

But last week, Staples finally watched his team step up the way he envisioned on Draft Day in March. And the result was the best week of any team in the NFBC as his Worst Team Ever team put up 3,190 points in Week 12.

“That was great news for a team that climbed out of dead last for the first time in recent memory,” Staples said.

The key to the big week was balance both offensively and on the mound. Big weeks from Ryan Braun (.429-1-7), Frank Thomas (.348-3-9), Alex Gordon (.400) and Paul Konerko (.300-2-4) led the way offensively. Yovani Gallardo and Joe Blanton teamed up for 23 strikeouts while Johan Santana and Ben Sheets combined for three wins and Jose Valverde posted two saves.

Staples went into his draft hoping to land Santana in the first round – which he did – and then grab a top closer (which also occurred with Francisco Rodriguez). After that, he wanted to compile a mix of solid veterans and young players with upside.

“We accomplished that with Manny Ramirez, Paul Konerko, Jason Giambi, Frank Thomas, Alex Gordon, Chris B. Young and Ryan Braun,” Staples said. “It hasn’t worked out offensively with injuries and a lack of performance, both from the vets and the kids. But they put it together this week.”

Staples is married and has two children. He lives in Orlando, Florida, where he works as a district manager for a large automotive parts and service chain.
