The Mitchell Report

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Dec 13, 2007 4:51 am

Okay, I'll start the official thread where we can discuss this today and it's impact on the game in 2008. I have nothing to add at this point, but once the report comes out I'd be interested in getting some feedback from our NFBC folks. Let the chatter follow the press conferences and see if we can make any sense out of this.

See ya after the announcement.

Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens and Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte were the first names to emerge Thursday from the Mitchell report.

ESPN.com reported Brian McNamee, a former trainer for the Yankees and Clemens, told investigators he supplied Clemens and Pettitte with steroids and that information is in the report. The Web site cited an unidentified source close to the trainer.

List not yet totally confirmed

Several current and former baseball stars are among expected to be named in a report later today on steroid use in Major League Baseball.

The following names are expected to be named in the report, according to WNBC:

Brady Anderson, Manny Alexander, Rick Ankiel, Jeff Bagwell, Barry Bonds, Aaron Boone, Rafaeil Bettancourt, Bret Boone, Milton Bradley, David Bell, Dante Bichette, Albert Belle, Paul Byrd, Wil Cordero, Ken Caminiti, Mike Cameron, Ramon Castro, Jose and Ozzie Canseco, Roger Clemens, Paxton Crawford, Wilson Delgado, Lenn y Dykstra, Johnny Damon, Carl Everett, Kyle

James A. Finley / AP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Farnsworth, Ryan Franklin, Rich Garces, Jason Grimsley, Troy Glaus, Juan Gonzalez, Eric Gagne, Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Giambi, Jeremy Giambi, Jose Guillen, Jay Gibbons, Juan Gonzalez, Clay Hensley, Jerry Hairston, Felix Heredia, Jr., Darren Holmes, Wally Joyner, Darryl Kile, Matt Lawton, Raul Mondesi, Mark McGwire, Guillermo Mota, Robert Machado, Damian Moss, Abraham Nunez, Trot Nixon, Jose Offerman, Andy Pettitte, Mark Prior, Neifi Perez, Rafael Palmiero, Albert Pujols, Brian Roberts, Juan Rincon, John Rocker, Pudge Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Scott Schoenweiis, David Segui, Alex Sanchez, Gary Sheffield, Miguel Tejada, Julian Tavarez, Fernando Tatis, Maurice Vaughn, Jason Varitek, Ismael Valdez, Matt Williams and Kerry Wood.

Mitchell's report exposes a "serious drug culture within baseball, from top to bottom," fingers MVPs and All-Stars and calls for beefed-up testing by an outside agency to clean up the game, The Associated Press learned.

The report by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell will include names of 60 to 80 players linked to performance-enhancing substances and plenty more information that exposes "deep problems" afflicting the sport, one of two sources with knowledge of the findings told the AP. Both sources said the report would not address amphetamines.

The two sources were familiar with discussions that led to the final draft but did not want to be identified because it was confidential until its scheduled release. They said the full report, which they had not read, totaled 304 pages plus exhibits.

Mitchell, a Boston Red Sox director, planned to release his report at 2 p.m. Thursday during a news conference in New York City. CNBC.com will carry the conference live.

No Giles Bros?

Wow, in a way I think less of them because they're NOT on the report. This just means that they plain suck! :D

Being in a report that had no subpoena power and is mostly based on the testimony of people who had something personal to gain by testifying is unlikely to have a lot of effect other than to give MLB more basis on which to increase their rules and testing procedures.

Because someone said Pettitte or LoDuca or anyone else had steroids doesn't really mean much in a court of law and thus the ability to do much about it. In addition many of these supposed users were in a time frame where the MLB regulations did not prohibit such use.

Yes, as Mitchell stated, MLB was slow to inititiate policies although they have done so now. I doubt much if anything happens to the players still in the game as a result of the Mitchell report. Look at the Royals signing of Guillen or the Astros trading for Tejada to see how concerned the major league clubs are.

Varitek is clean!

Clemens doesn't have to worry anymore about not wanting to go to the hall with a Bosox cap on.

Pujols dirty.

ARod clean.

Glad to see ARod is natural, as I always believed. He truly is the best in the game.

Some real surprises on the list, as well as the expected ones.

sluggo- fyi- these are the guys mitchell has word on. this is not everyone. "clean as we know it" would be a better way to put it. i am sure there are and were many many more. and the answer? don't go to the games if you don't like it.

Pujols is not on the list. The original list prior to 2PM was incorrect. I can tell you the following memebers of the 04 sox were not on it: Nixon, Varitek, Damon, Nomar.

The Yankees are hit the hardest by this. Plenty of key guys from their 96-00 run. Clemens, Petitte, knoblauch, Justice, Stanton, Grimsley

Thanks Red Sox, I'm just home for lunch and it seems like at least 3 lists floating around online.

Rotoworld, for example, does not have Sheffield on their list.

Pujols was NOT on the Mitchell report. I'm glad as I saw his name at first and was disappointed. Honestly, very few on the list are surprising. I think Pettitte and Clemens are the most disappointing and it will be very interesting to see how the media treats Clemens vs. Bonds. Both are in the same boat as far as I'm concerned.

Very interesting stuff so far and more to come.

There is certainly some question about reporting on the lists - as some have Sheffield on while others do not.

Also Red Sox Nation - curious where you got your list because ESPN in many hours of coverage specifically said McGwire was NOT in the report.

Bottom line is no one should be making assumptions unless they have read the report or designate their credibility to whomever they are relying on.

And as I suggested before, and Mitchell said live in his presser - absent any action taken by Selig (yeah, right) against Flagrant offenders, nothing is likely to happen to any former or current player and absent those who failed a test or admitted they took something, they have Nothing but second or third hand information.

Mitchell Report was a joke.....It was based on 2 rats who were facing jail time unless they named names.....I can see where Rodomski's info is useful as he has receipts, cancelled checks, fed-ex packages, etc. but basically all they have on Clemens and Pettitte is the testimony (of a criminal) on what he saw and did (basically 1 persons word vs another persons) I would have thought Mitchell would have had more concrete evidence on certain players before he ruined their careers. The Brian Roberts stuff is a joke!!

and to all the Yankee haters trying to say the 2000 title and others were tainted....go back and read the report...the only meaningful player who "supposedly" was on roids was Clemens. Knoblauch, Stanton, Justice, Pettitte all "supposedly" bought roids or HGH after 2000.

Any player that wasnt tied to Balco, Albany or the YAnkee or Met clubhouse got off easy. Everyone knows there are juicers across the Bigs but only like 1% of the players now have their careers ruined or tainted. A JOKE!! I hope Michell really tried hard finding rats in the Red Sox, Angel, Tiger, Brewer, St Louis etc clubhouses. You know he didnt....JOKE!!!
