Top 20 Sleepers For Fantasy Sports Magazine

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Jan 23, 2008 2:57 am

Good job all. I have room for three more sleeper picks if anyone wants to send something today. The sleepers look good.

Interestingly, out of all the nominations I've received so far, only one selection has been duplicated. That shows that great minds don't think alike!! :D Anson Chan also stole my sleeper, but I'll come up with another one. Good job all.

I have 18 good entries for our magazine. Tom and I can each write one more, but if you have a Sleeper pick that you think will make the cut send a paragraph to me at [email protected] by Monday morning. Thanks much.

which 18 players are already taken? i'd rather not spend 30 minutes and find out it's a duplicate.

Greg,

I just lobbed another sleeper your way. My email was acting a little wonky, so if you do not get it, let me know and I will resend.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
Yeah, Helms was a great call by somebody last year (I know it wasn't yours).

I still think Gomes and his 20/20 potential (I know, it changes every year) can be a good pick if he can lock down that DH job. I'll never give up.

One of these days I could be right and that is when I'll say, "I told you so".

Hey Greg, so who do you think was the the best sleeper pick for 2008?

The Edwards offered two to defend the 2007 title (Hunter Pence):

Taylor Teagarden - not a bad pick but a year early maybe.

Lyle Overbay - Incredibly average.

Lyle Overbay - Incredibly average. Well, who wins the prize for 2008:

Jeremy Hermida (Anson Chan)

Michael Bourn (Michael Edelman)

Billy Butler (Shawn Young)

Travis Buck (Andy Nolan)

Justin Upton (Tom Kessenich)

Matt Garza (Mark Srebro)

Brendan Ryan (Perry Van Hook)

Luke Scott (Gary Cutler)

Chris Denorfia (Steve Jupinka)

Aaron Heilman (Scott Fleming)

Rajai Davis (Eddy Betancourt)

Brandon Jones (Scott Simonetti)

Taylor Teagarden (Wayne Edwards)

Alexei Ramirez (Russel Wyatt)

Jason Hirsh (Dave McDonald)

Robert McCrory (Gerry Scott DiMarco)

Scott Hairston (John Zaleski)

C.J. Wilson (Stanley Kaye)

Nate McLouth (Terry Kent)

Lyle Overbay (Lisa Edwards)

I think there are two pretty clear choices here.
I think Terry Kent wins hands down. Russel Wyatt was 2nd, but McClouth had much better numbers and did it all year. CJ Wilson was good but got hurt when it mattered most.

"CJ Wilson was good"

Huh?

I vote.....

1. Nate McLouth (Terry Kent)

2. Alexei Ramirez (Russel Wyatt)

3. Matt Garza (Mark Srebro)

3. Matt Garza (Mark Srebro) Ok you're right. Hadn't bothered to look at his final stats. He sucked. He was a true 1 category guy. Knock him off that list. Either way, it wasn't very close even between Ramirez and McClouth.
Sleeper is a tough term to get my arms around, but I don't really think any of the top 250 players (based on ADP) qualify. I think Alexei wins as McLouth and Garza were taken well before him.

Commercial break ~

Nate McLouth says he wants to be your Sleeper of the Year candidate.

But who is Nate McLouth? (scary low hummmmm in the background)

McLouth is a MLB insider who’s been a part of the failed Pirate organization since 2001. As a member of the player elite, McLouth has been featured in ‘Who’s Who in Baseball’ for multiple seasons. (Show pictures of Who’s Who in Baseball with Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens on cover)

In 2005 McLouth played with a former two time sleeper of the year candidate Michael Restovich, a relationship that he has yet to fully explain. (Show video of Restovich striking out)

McLouth is a spend big draft pick (ADP #229, as high as #166)

(Change to happy trumpet and string music)

Alexei Ramirez is a baseball outsider that virtually no one had heard of before December of last year when he challenged the leaders of his own government. (Show picture of Castro smoking a cigar)

As a second baseman, Ramirez knows how to handle the tough to fill ‘middle infield’ roster slot.

Alexei Ramirez is a leader on a playoff team. (Show video of Ramirez hitting grand slam off Detroit during a “win or go home” game)

~ Paid for by the committee to elect Alexei Ramirez 2008 Sleeper of the Year.
