SportsLine.com AL Experts Auction League

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:24 am

Tomorrow afternoon I'll be participating in a 12-team AL Auction League with other industry writers that will be hosted by CBS Sportsline.com. It's possible that they will have the results live and if so I'll post the link tomorrow. This should be a fun auction league as it's so early in the off-season that our dollar values will be tested for sure.

Anyway, I'll post results tomorrow after all is done.

Okay, this auction was just downright crazy. A whole lot more money went to the top stars than I've ever seen in an AL-only auction. I chose to stay back and let the money flow, but eventually I had to jump in as 2-3 of us stayed back and I could see that I'd be in bidding wars for the second-tier players if I didn't dive in. A few lessons learned:

** Top stars went for inflated dollars, put position scarcity at second, short and third may force that this year.

** The money saved came in the outfield after the Top 20 players and among relievers. I dove in and paid for five outfielders and paid for two closers, going against the grain in this league. It obviously hurt me with my infielders, but I think my pitching is solid enough to compete.

** Top dollar also went for the top catchers, and then after that it was a fight for anyone who wouldn't hurt your team batting average. Wow, what a mess there.

I'll get some dollar values posted soon. Get ready for some big numbers.

Here's the top bids in the CBS Sports AL Auction League:

Alex Rodriguez $54

Miguel Cabrera $46

Carl Crawford $40

Grady Sizemore $37

B.J. Upton $37

Vladimir Guerrero $36

David Ortiz $35

Alex Rios $35

Derek Jeter $32

Carlos Guillen $32

Robinson Cano $32

Nick Markakis $31

Bobby Abreu $31

Victor Martinez $30

Ichiro Suzuki $30

Justin Verlander $28

Erik Bedard $27

Roy Halladay $24

Jonathan Papelbon $28

J.J. Putz $25

Francisco Rodriguez $24

Joe Nathan $22

It's never fair to just list dollar values because it always depends when players are nominated how their final bids evolve. But at least this gives you some ideas of the wild money being thrown around on the top stars. Enjoy.

Worst of all, it was a league where you lose the player if he gets traded to the NL, so a guy like Crede didn't come up until the end and went for $3. Nobody could believe we were playing under those rules, but apparently they wanted to let their readers know what these "trade bait" guys would go for.

My point was: Does anyone really play in auction leagues anymore where you lose the guy outright if he's traded to the other league? Wow, that was so '80s-ish, wasn't it? :D

Greg - surprisingly I get a lot of subscribers who play in leagues like that - makes is really difficult to make what should be normal decisions - and really unlucky for some players.

The league I participated in for the last several years used the lose player in NL trade rule. We also disallowed a replacement for a suspended player. I had Juan Salas last year. OUCH. Finally, we only permitted a few discretionary drop/adds each year. All of these rules originated when the league started back in the 80s, but attempts to overturn them failed. Like the Captain said, there are still many old school leagues out there.
I feel like I'm the Jerry Quarry of the NFBC.

Greg can you post your team, would like to take a look at it. Well, Eddie, as you know in any of these single-league auctions, you always leave with a few holes in your roster. Try as I may in this one, I just couldn't get an infielder with value and my infield is WICKEDLY BAD!!! I tried to get offensive production through my outfielders as the stats add up wherever you can get them. I think my pitching can produce points for me and maybe even allow me to trade for an infielder later. So much money went towards offense in this league that I didn't shy away from grabbing a second closer or add another starter here.

We will draft seven reserve players including minor leaguers next week via e-mail. We'll then play this league out on CBS Sports.com. Remember that if any player gets traded out of the AL, you lose his stats going forward. No fun.

Cant believe BJ Ryan goes for 3 and Accardo goes for 11.Dindt we just hear that Ryan could be back for the start of the season, even if he misses a month.Seems like a super bargain.

I thought Stats has a pretty solid team with two top closers.

I thought Stats has a pretty solid team with two top closers. Did they punt stolen bases? Will they get enough runs? Holes on every team, it looks like. But October will prove differently. Unfortunately, this league could be decided by inter-league trades as we lose players who go to the NL.

This was from Eddie Gillis. I somehow deleted his previous post:

Hey Greg , your right on Stats their speed is low, a couple of young guys who could help.[Aybar] Here's some players that went too high for me.

Arod 54 never seen anyone this high.

Halladay 24 just not enough K's

J Weaver 20 too much for me , 15 is bout right.

Baldelli my hammy hurts risk.

Peralta not a 20 dollar player [no speed or bavg]

Lugo 22 no thanks

E Chavez 16 risk play it safe

Jeter 32 not worth it , speed dropped 34 to 15.

Co Co could be a 4th outfielder 14 dollars

Gathright 7 unless minor league stats count

B Crosby 12 can he ever be healthy.

Carlos Guillen $32

Robinson Cano $32

Nick Swisher $26

Jorge Posada $22

Justin Verlander $28

Dice-K $25

Everything is relevent at season's end once we see how these guys perform, but all of these guys were way above what I had them listed at. Then again, I overpaid for some guys too, or else I would have been left out in the cold.

Enjoy the numbers and I'll add the NL results soon.

I'm curious about Vernon Wells, as he is one of the players whose ADP could be all over the place come March. Was he called out early or late? Assuming he's healthy, and given the overall strength of the Blue Jay lineup, he should have a nice bounce-back season.

[/QUOTE]Good question. Wells was called out late and I was holding my money to grab my starting 2B and SS. Then Peralta went for $20, Orlando Cabrera for $20, Mark Ellis for $17, and Placido Polanco for $19 and I decided to go for the last strong outfielder instead of overspend there. I had Wells valued at $22 and overpaid late in the game, but I just felt Wells had more of an upside at $26 than the leftover middle infielders. At that point you either jump in or get left behind.

That left me with a max bid of $12 to get one good 2B or SS and I lost out each time on guys like Asdrubal Cabrera and Jose Lopez (spent $1 too much before they came up) and finally just said the hell with it and went with $9 for Teahan. I knew what my middle infield would look like later, but still dove in for the last SPs and figured I'd take my chances with a strong rotation and strong outfield.

Now that I look at everyone's team, there are holes for everyone. The dollars went too high for certain positions and I spent in other areas. We'll see if it pays off or not.

Given those ridiculous end-game prices, you most certainly did not overpay for Vernon. Always fun to see the auction values...

WOW Mark Ellis 17 missed that one.Agree with Swisher , Cano and Gullien.I like Teahen at 9 a lot, last year i spent 22 on him in the Vegas auction.IF he can get that power up to even 15 to 18 homers with some speed and good bavg he will be a easy 15 to 20 dollar value.
