Where would you take Pujols in the first round of a 15 teamer? I like to hear Rick Wilton talk about injuries because he stays up on that area of the market better than anyone else in baseball. When he said yesterday that Pujols is one throw away from being out the rest of the season, I took notice. Yikes. Now I have to admit that if I was like 10th, 11th or 12th, it would be very hard to let him go by, but this latest news scares even me. Keep watching his spring performances and then act accordingly.

Actually, they aren't volatile. They consistently suck eggs and ruin ERA and WHIP's.
Four $1 guys that can win 15, K 240, ERA 3.75 and WHIP 1.25 is money well spent in that strategy.
It allowed a 188/72 split, which allows us to trade our excess HR/RBI for what we need later on.

At the AFL I suggested you present the NFBC overall winner with a really nice jacket with a #1 on it prior to the main event this season. You asked me where the money would come from. Then you turn around and order jerseys for EVERY main league winner. Where did the money come from?
And thanks! Great marketing idea, and a very nice touch for the winners.

It seems like the first sign-ups before there was much of a message board must have been hardest to get. Did you just do that by advertising in the mag or did you rely on friends to join and chat up the message board. Thanks! Wow, this is a good question but will take a long answer. I'll break it off a bit.
I NEVER even thought about getting involved in the games side before 2002. In fact, we had been asked many times by game operators to lend our Fantasy Baseball Magazine name to games and to share revenue, similar to The Sporting News game and the USA Today Sports Weekly games. We chose not to compete with our advertisers and thus just carried on as a magazine publisher in this industry for 12+ years.
From 1989-2002, I was the editor of Fantasy Sports (was Baseball) Magazine and Sports Cards Magazine. I also ran the Fantasy Sports Trade Conference starting in 2000, an event I created. After 9/11, the economy and world obviously changed and the sports card market was so bad that we eventually folded Sports Cards Magazine in August. That August, I also hosted the latest industry Trade Conference and we had just 55 attendees as things slowed.
I remember driving home from that event wondering what the future held for me. I was no longer an editor in the sports card field, the fantasy industry was contracting and our magazine was losing advertisers. I thought the end was near!!
Then two weeks later I went to the WCOFF's inaugural draft and was just amazed at what they had accomplished. In fact, I went up to Emil during the break and said, "This is amazing. Great job. We should partner together to do a high-stakes baseball event as well." He was so tired he said call me next week and we'll discuss.
The whole plan was to create a World Championship of Fantasy Baseball (WCOFB) and I wrote up all the rules on the flight home and created everything in a few days. I sent it to Lenny and Emil and they loved it. Our company liked the idea too, but unbeknownst to me we were in the middle of being sold and we didn't proceed quickly with Lenny and Emil. We had a deal that was close around Thanksgiving and then everything fell apart.
They did WCOFB alone that year (2003) and the next year I talked our company into trying the NFBC alone in three different cities. I got approval for the NFBC around Dec. 1, 2003, which was pretty late.

Did you just do that by advertising in the mag or did you rely on friends to join and chat up the message board. Thanks! The first event was extremely difficult and was long dog years to me: I aged 7 years for that one year. We are a conservative company, so I was told that this could NOT lose money the first year. I created a plan with 300 teams where the break-even was like 240 teams. First year expenses like advertising are high, so my expenses were more than I had anticipated. We also had big guarantees at three different locations, counting rooms in Las Vegas. I loved the game concept, but trying to get 300 teams off the bat was tough.
It was a slow beginning until Dave Cushard and Ken Bayes of LeaderBoard Sports contacted me and said they were in the WCOFB and wanted to also support the NFBC. I instantly became their best friends and asked them to help me spread the word. They did better than that as they recruited fellow baseball die-hards to sign up for our event. They also helped the Message Boards blossom and things started to take off slowly.
Still, we had only 69 signups in early February and I could see that we were going to take a financial bath. We still had only 145 signups with a week to go and I had to go into a Monday morning meeting to make sure that we were guaranteeing the prize money and that everyone knew hard times were ahead. My two immediate bosses didn't like this discussion, but they agreed with me that we had a chance to be the clear leader in this area of the industry and the six-figure bath was worth it. We were going to ask for forgiveness later rather than ask for permission to continue!!!
That day I went on the Message Boards and said we once again were guaranteeing all of the prize money no matter where we finished and we got 35 signups before Sunday to finish at 180. We then got 15 late ones and we announced the draft spots the next day for 195 teams. We lost money, but it wasn't as much as it could have been. And the next year the WCOFB folded and in 2005 we were the only high-stakes baseball game in town and we sold out at 300 teams. We've sold out every year since and have expanded in many different ways. What a story!!!

Drafting in an auction for the first time with a partner. Any tips or suggestions on making that work effectively, dividing up the responsibilities at the draft table, communication, etc.? What has worked for you in the past and what hasn't?
Neal The big key is to go over every player before the draft and agree on how you feel about each guy beforehand. Argue about the merits of each guy good and bad beforehand and then know what you're going to do at the table. You can't look at each other at that point and say "do you like him?" And put a value on every single player and know if you're willing to pay for him a few bucks above or below when he's called up.
John and I know exactly what we want to pay for each player before the draft and then John uses RotoLab software during the auction and that changes the values as the auction moves along. We price enforce along with other teams, but I can honestly say that we never got stuck with a player we didn't want this weekend. You have to keep pushing the prices up, but be careful with that, too. Auctions are a BLAST. You'll love it.
Price enforcing is critical and my favorite part of the auction. The killer to any strategy is letting a team get a solid player cheap.
I'm nominating or immediately raising the bid to about 15-20% below where he should go. This also creates inflation, which is good for our strategy.
We had a few extra hours in Phoenix this year, and the software helped us quickly mix and match dozens of roster scenarios to see which hit our targets best. Phillips at $34 (we paid $35) was THE player that kept showing up on all the best scenarios.
Greg and I wanted Gagne at $9, and it would have worked there, but it didn't at $13, so we passed, all the while knowing what we had to do next if we did pass.

I'm amazed that major league baseball allows the opportunity for manipulation. They have enough problem with steriods. I miss the good old days when your pitchers get pound in Colorado!!! I don't even smoke cigars, so I know very little about humidors!!
Honestly, I have a loooooooooong memory, so I will ALWAYS stay away from Colorado pitchers. Man, Jeff Francis is going for $12 in LABR and I just can't believe it. I can't do that, even though I know things have changed. I agree with you, it could change real quickly.

I forgot this one and I loved it when I saw it. Nah, she did an experiment involving a bag of flour where you dropped different sized balls to create crators. My wife did this with her at home and the entire kitchen was white and the hardwood floors were slippery. She was grabbing my golf balls, bowling ball, softball, football, everything. It was crazy. They were laughing the whole time and I was crying.
There must have been 50 exhibits yesterday from kindergartners to 7th graders. Truly great stuff and I was proud of Danielle's exhibit. What fun it is being a parent. Nothing better.
One year she's in a wheelchair. The next year she's flouring up my golf balls!!!

Greg - Could you give us your scouting report and your projection for Carlos Villanueva this year?
Outside of Sheets and Gallardo, who will be the Brewer's most valuable starter at the end of the year in terms of fantasy production?
Speculating for saves in the Event Gagne goes down.... how would you rank the following:
Torres, Turnbow, Mota, McClung, Riske
Thanks

You can easily handle 15 leagues and we can easily hit your credit card 15 times!!
In fact, you need to join FIVE more leagues!!!
The over/under is the $19,500 you earned last year. Like Favre said yesterday, anything less than winning the Super Bowl this year would be a disappointment for him. So he quit. You and Childs and Haney and other winners face the same dilemma. I trust you won't just quit over the pressure of it all. And either should have Brett.

Damn...I over-napped.
Do they separate "caught stealing" from "pick-off" anywhere...giving one more credit to the P and one more to the C?
It would also be nice to see when a CS was a mental error or a great move by the P...and not so much a players lack of jump/speed.

brett def hof'er, but he's not top 5 imo. I have no problem with your assessment. But I also bet you never saw him play in person, either, right? My seats are in the end zone and watching Favre play all these years was an unbelievable thrill. This guy threw balls before his receivers made their cuts. He anticipated blitzes and coverage changes perfectly. Yes, many times he gambled and lost. Many times he threw where the receiver should have been and they cut off the route, something you didn't see on TV.
I don't care how you rank QBs. Marino, Montana, Favre, Unitas any of them. They were all the greatest at one time and the guys who won more Super Bowls than Favre can easily be ranked ahead of him. All I know is that for my money, Favre was the greatest QB I ever saw in person. My ranking may be wrong, but that's okay. It's my opinion.

C'mon, this team needs to build for the future and Lopez is a big part of their future. Put him at SS and let him bounce back. It would be stupid if they do anything else.

A-Rod, Reyes and Wright would do it for me. Hanley still scares me a bit, but that's just me. Still, 4 would be a good spot for him. Again, that's just me.

I'm amazed that major league baseball allows the opportunity for manipulation. They have enough problem with steriods. I miss the good old days when your pitchers get pound in Colorado!!! Amusing story related to this topic.
Last season the Rox ran a commercial showing Francis and Cook sitting in the humidor sorting baseballs. Francis would pick up a ball a say "Mmmm, fastbalL" and toss it in a bucket. Cook would respond with "nice slider" and toss it in the bucket. Then one of them grabbed a ball, threw his head back and said "Ew, hanging curve" and tossed it into a different bucket that said visiting team. Funny as Hell.

Questions for everyone here:
Who was your diamond in the rough selected last year and about what round did you get that player?
Mine has been Brynes the last 2 years and last year I believe he was taken in the 10 round. 50 steals? Will he do it again? Maybe but he signed a huge contract and anytime a guy signs a big contract seems like they always drop off.

When I heard Pujols was "one throw away"...I thought to myself...doesn't he play 1st base?
1st base THROWS less than any position on the field.

How about special baseball hats for the 5-year vets?
I would go with a black hat, with a special gold NFBC emblem, and on the back the words "CHARTER MEMBER" in gold lettering. =========================================
I'm still wearing mine. Just wore it to a meeting. I like the feel of it and the logo on the back is great. Good call RT on that one.
