Rick, you generally have great knowledge and feel, but you are a little off base on this one - Murphy has nowhere near the potential of Byrnes (and no Shag Wagon).

Yes he has moved from fourth OF to a regular, but his upside even with full time AB is low double digit HR and SB without many RBI or R.
Perry, ouch dude - I was feeling better about my OF problems, and then you go and shoot me through the dang heart lol

He is taking advantage of the opportunity and some bad performances ahead of him to grab a spot.....for now. I actually doubt it lasts, but play him while you have him - he doesn't have that much power or speed. YES he could be a very good 5th OF for a while. your eyes must be like zaleski's...

he WAS/IS THE first round bust. word out of Detriot is he is seeing a shrink to help him deal with his "star status" and the stress of having signed an ENORMOUS CONTRACT.

before you know it, he will be hitting 6th, then 7th in the lineup.

no sense in beating a dead horse here. nothing to see (obviously)
Yeah no problem Mark. Plus all this negative press on the messageboards might bother Cabrera and cause him to start seeing a shrink. :D

Anyways I won't post anymore on Cabrera until his batting average gets over .200. :D

Cabrera just needs one thing to be back to his old self. The tigers need to trade for Amezaga. Those two were inseperable on the Marlins.

If receiving $150 million guaranteed, no matter how bad you perform, even if you strike out 600 times each year for the next 8 years.....if that stresses someone out, if they see that as pressure, then by all means they SHOULD see a shrink.

In my opinion, I can't think of anything else that would completely remove all stress, receiving such a big contract. Talk about stress free, no matter what, I'm set. How well or poorly I perform is totally irrelevant. In fact, in most cases that's the problem. The LACK of pressure. It leaves no incentive to give 100%.

Now, maybe someone with a fragile ego, someone lacking self confidence who has to look to others for approval, maybe they would be worried about pleasing others all the time, but from what I've seen/read, Miguel's ego is just fine, to say the least.

Miggy was someone I reaaaally wanted this year. I was going to take him in all my leagues....

I got him in NONE of my leagues, the price was just a notch too high IMO, yet, I still wonder if I should have gone the extra buck, even with the slow start.

In the main event, I was set to take him with the 5th overall pick, but, to my amazement, Hanley Ramirez was still there, something I didn't think was possible, so I took Hanley instead.

Even now, I wonder if that was a mistake. Only 1 SB so far, NOT good. I'm more worried that Hanley might be a bust, not Miguel.

Some recent cold starts(2007):

Fonzie - April '07 - 0 HR's 1 RBI

David Wright - April '07 - 0 HR's 6 RBI

Teixeira - April '07 - 2 HR's 6 RBI

If Miguel keeps up this putrid pace over the next 14 games he'll have 3 HR's and 3 RBI's in April.

Pretty comparable, and still plenty of time to be a fantasy beast this year. Not that I'm PREDICTING that to happen, just that the odds are pretty good that it will. I think worst case, he finishes with numbers that would put him in the mid to late 2nd round.

Having said that, while the 'pressure of a contract' wouldn't worry me in the slightest, a couple things would be concerning, if only slightly:

1) adjusting to new pitchers

2) Hamstring - which bothered him in the Winter Leagues and in Spring Training

Never trust a baseball player that has hamstring problems. Ever.

Can't take this for the gospel, but I didn't touch him in any of my leagues this year. No chance he hits 25 bombs this year. Won't sniff .300 either.

Going from sunny Venezuela to sunny Miami is NOT culture nor weather shock.

Going from sunny Miami to depressing Detroit...concrete city...is.

He does have half his team fluent in Spanish...but cold and depressing weather takes its toll on me...so maybe it does on him as well.

He may warm up along with the weather.

Interesting, when did he say he hates Detroit? Word I'm hearing is that, appart from the weather, he's never been happier. Carlos Guillen(for some bizarre reason) is one of his idols and they're great friends. They worked out together in the offseason, which, by multiple accounts, was his best. Cabrera has been telling everyone that he feels right at home in Detroit. A statement that seems corroborated by the fact he just commited to playing there the next 8 years, and he's got former teammates Pudge & Willis there, as well as close friend Carlos Guillen. Maggs and Carlos are both Venezuelan btw.

I was there for both games this weekend and by my standards, the weather was neither cold, nor depressing. The sun was out. Saturday game time temperature was 59, Sunday night was around 50. In some of the concourses where there are wind tunnels, it feels cold, but on the field it does not. I suppose it's relatively cold for someone used to Miami's heat, but I would think that it gets down in the 50's in Miami during the Winter, so this shouldn't be a shock to his system unless he's a wuss.

I don't know where Cabrera lives, but the last I heard was that none of the players live downtown, they all live in the suburbs, some of which are, quite surprisingly to me, among the richest/wealthiest in the nation(according to some article I read which ranked cities according to average income/affluency per capita).

My wife was good friends with our neighbor who happened to be my daughters first grade teacher and very close friends with Mrs. Greg Maddux. And I am not kidding.

Mrs. Maddux told her close friend that Mr. Maddux was feeling tired, knew he wasn't coming back to the Braves, and only wanted to pitch long enough to get his 300 and retire after his 2004 season with the Cubbies.

Oops! You just can't take too much of this stuff seriously.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I am also from the Detroit area, I work across the street from Comerica Park.

The weather here has been beautiful!

M. Cabrera is going to be ok. It should come as no shock, that he is not going to hit 40 or 50 homeruns. Like I have wrote before the season even started, no player has hit over 30 homeruns since Comerica-Park was buit!

His numbers will average out, and he will be a great player this year. He is happy!

Use common sense people...why would he sign an 8 year contract?

I could go on and on...about some of the things people write on these message boards.

Some people in some really bad slumps are

1. Ted Lilly---no more lucky outings?

2. Victorino (this guy would really stink if they ever lost Rollins, him being good is a result of Rollins bening on base and showing his speed)

3. Andew Jones---what happened to this guy???

4. Kenji Johjima---he is pressing...why?

5. The Detroit Tigers Pitching!

6. Erik Bedard (he won yesterday but looked bad)

7. C. Billingsley

8. Zito (like everyone didnt know this)

9. A.j. Burnett (could just have been 1 bad day)

10. ADAM DUNN--NOW HE CANT EVEN PLAY THE FIELD??

11. A-ROD, J HAMILTON, CRAWFORD, SORIANO, ...I Think we all expect more out of these guys.

12. Kemp...What did you do? go on a date with Joe Torres daughter? get some playing time!

I know its just week 2, but gosh darn-it!

I like that someone wrote..."its not a race, its a marathon"

That made me feel alot better! thank you

Good luck everyone!
