Auctions vs Drafts. Which do you like?

I’ve always liked the Auctions better. You have an even start for players. Drafts meanwhile are more widely played. I agree it’s hard to say one is better than the other. The NFBC offers both. I’m wondering which do you like for pure fun?

I prefer the auction; you can target players and get them. In a snake draft you either have to reach or get lucky to acquire the players you want. In my auction league I have Hanley and Ryan Braun which is an impossible combo in a draft. I also think it adds a lot of strategy in who you nominate and when. Personally I like to bring up young players that I would love for a buck, but others will overspend on. Also going into the auction I generally have my full roster design put together and get about half my targets. For example I was targeting Colby Rasmus, which I drafted in the 21st and 23rd in NFBC Satillites, but in the auction I was able to wait late with money reserved for him and get him for $2.

I enjoy both but prefer auctions. Player picks in the first 3 to 4 rounds of a draft are largely predicated based on your draft position whereas auctions give the fantasy player more choices in player selection.

Also, auctions have the added complexity of financial resource management which makes the game more interesting.

I stress out too much still in an auction.

I can relax during a snake draft.

I can drink more during a snake draft = better in my mind. :D

I guess the more experience I get at auction drafting...the more I'll enjoy it and the less I'll stress.

Lance, you're onto something here. I think I'll try your approach next season.

Lance,

A great point re drinking.

I have been doing auction drafts since 1983 and still get stressed. I always give the competition more credit than they deserve at being well prepared, thus I stress.

Since the inception of the NFBC I have also enjoyed the snake draft.

Does it make me a disturbed person that I actually enjoy the auction better even with the added stress???

I was a long time snake draft person. Three years ago I participated in my first auction draft. I now have nine total teams and four are in auction leagues. I truly like auction leagues and am getting better at them each year.

I think snake drafts are best when you really don't know much about your other competitors - like any NFBC main event or Satellite league. Drafts follow specific patterns and you can plan things reasonably well. Auction Leagues are better when you are with the same group of people and you know something about their tendencies and style of drafting. This may even carry over to NFBC auctions as the set of people is relatively stable so you likely know half the owners in any league.

I think the best thing about auction drafts is their unpredictability. Each one is different and you have to think.
