Just finished the SCL draft. Great time and lots of good owners. Tommorrow I'll be going over my team and strategy.

Forget the mock drafts sign up for some early satellites. Lots of surprises.

Definitely some surprises Jim!

I have glanced again and again at our roster and while I see holes I see lots of good things as well. Gonna be interesting to see how things play out over the next two months and some teams get a lot stronger and some get a lot weaker.

A few surprises here...

No pitchers until the 3rd, when the Big (especially in CC's case)3 all went: Johan, CC and then Lincecum.

Kinsler at 7 is unexpected.

How do you not "reach" when you draft 3 months before the season. As I said earlier, a lot of teams will be real happy over the next couple months and a lot will be upset about a few picks, but all in all hard to call anything a reach in January.

If anyone wants to do a $125 satellite league earlier than we have planned, we can do it. I'll start another thread to see if anyone is interested and if so we can do it. Thanks.

Just some quick hits in comparison to the "Free" Champions draft and this one to show where some movement took place:

1st rd basically the same players except Longoria and Holliday replace Beltran and Pedroia. Kinsler the upward mover from 12 to 7 and Tex got a 3 spot Yankee boost.

Biggest movers in terms of overall selection from one draft to another that I caught:

Andre Ethier +56

Chone Figgins +44

JJ Hardy +38

Cliff Lee +37

Jon Broxton +39

Chris Davis +27

Rafael Furcal +22

Carlos Pena +20

Jay Bruce +14

Hunter Pence +12

David Ortiz +10

Magglio Ordonez -38

Derrick Lee -27

Vlad Guerrero -20

Bobby Abreu -15

Ryan Ludwick -22

Robinson Cano -21

Stephen Drew -15

Victor Martinez -15

Some players are "reaches" Jan thru Dec!! ;) ;)

An early draft DOES make things interesting, however! People will see Kinsler and Longoria in the 1st rd, and because it is THE Shawn Childs League, these two will move up on cheat sheets and deflate values. Good or bad, each individual must decide on risk/reward in 1st rd or two. IMHO ;) ;) ;) ;)

The Chris Davis tout express keeps on moving. Someone will draft him in the 2nd by March.

Thanks Emory,

At a quick glance the first possible guy that could take a hit is Broxton if Hoffman accepts the Dodgers 1 year deal that is on the table. He obviously doesn't want to leave the West Coast and his wife and three kids at this point in his career if he can help it. It will be interesting if any of the other California teams jump in on this.

But the Ethier train has a new captain, I'm just riding in the middle car now. ;)

Forget the mock drafts sign up for some early satellites. Lots of surprises. It was fun to get started with the draft last night. Up all night studying the results.

My Strategy - I punted K's and Wins. I went with an reliever team.

Why? I just want to get into the money. Top 3 teams get money back and a free entry towards next season. In January, you can find some relievers and closers late in the draft.

My first six picks went towards offense.

Strategy - Wanted to draft established MLB players that had a high average with power and could steal bases. By punting K's and Wins, I need 60+ points from my offense.

My picks

1) Holladay

2) Crawford

3) Bay

4) Martin

5) Derek Lee

6) V. Martinez

I'm happy with my first six picks. I tried to draft players that last a little value from last year. I think I took care of batting average and stolen bases. Little bit down on the power.

When you guys get a chance, let me what you think of punting two categories and trying to finish in the money of a league. I definitely will not work overall in the main event but for an individual league, in January, might get me in the money.

In a couple days, I'll go over my next six picks with a strategy of my offense and some of my reliever picks.

Thanks for posting the results Greg...quite interesting to see. In the first round, there will be some serious reaches this year as there are really only 8-9 sure fire first rounders. So truth be told, it is tough to be hypercritical of any of the first round picks. Rather it is more of a personal preference thing.

Kinsler: His pro-rated 2008 numbers look great, but over some of the sure things like Howards' 40hr and 130 rbi, Siizemore's 25-25?

Some 2nd round surprises to me: Markakis quietly put together a good season last year...but quiet is the operative word. Kemp. Ichiro...again an aging sppedster whose numbers are on decline on a team on the decline

3rd: Furcal. I know the guy had a great 6 weks but with a back injury and an inconsistent long term track record. Manny surprised he lasted

4th rd: Grandy surprised he lasted. Guerrero...while I am usually against aging superstars, I feel like even his 08 #s justify higher pick.

5th : Jeter??? why? Ditto Figgins who I had to bench for last month last season he was so useless.

I like the team and should have plenty of speed .

Utley could be great value if he is ready or even a month late.Really like my starters especially my big three Liriano,Santana, and Nolasco or three can go 15 win's and 200 k's.Didnt get stud closers but Capps and Francisco hopefully will keep me in the middle of the pack in saves.I also realize im low on homer's but rbi's and run's should be good.

Any opinon's go ahead.

I like your team Eddie. Power might not be a big issue. Pitching has question marks, but who's doesn't? Solid draft.

16-21 I think you did real well. Nice.

Eddie,

You cornered the market on Itzuris.

I like the 20-30 round pitching draft picks of E Jack, Purcey, Balfour Reyes. Balfour could end up getting you 8-12 saves

Eddie,

Love the power/speed guys you took in the first few rounds. Also like how you got Liriano in the 6th to anchor the staff. Brett Myers in the 14th is crazy value. People need to look at his 2nd half last year and realize that he is an unrestricted free agent after the season. Nice pick. Overall, like the team but the Utley situations is scary. I took him in the Champions draft in the middle of 2nd a few weeks ago. Too hard to pass up, he is a warrior and I think he'll be close by Openeing Day.
