Greg - in the SCL draft last night, Kazmir was not taken until 8.14. Are we still allowed to join the NFBC this season? Wow, really? Good thing I wasn't in that draft. I have him pegged at 80-85 overall, but it's obvious I'm overvaluing him because in every draft he falls to me. I just see a guy who led the AL in strikeouts the year before and because of injuries early just never was 100 percent last year. He's a bounce-back guy for me on a good team with solid stuff who could still be an AL leader in strikeouts. I'll keep taking him in upcoming drafts and see if he proves me wrong because nobody else is seeing the same thing, I guess.

Trust me, I've been wrong before and I'll probably be wrong again, but watch out for me in LABR AL because I'll be saying $23.
I see 12 wins and 180 K's - you have him higher? :D
I don't have my books in front of me, but how many strikeouts did he have in 2007 on a losing team?? If you're going to project 25 starts, he will maybe get only 180 K's (7 per game). But if he gets 30 or more starts, he should get 200+. So I'm betting on a season of good health.

When all is said and done:

Scott Kazmir = Oliver Pere While I think that is too harsh, at least we know he is better than Victor Zambrano.

Okay, I have to put some youngsters, a cat and a dog to bed, so thanks for joining me for the chat. Carry on without me and let's do this more often. We have 53 inches of snow outside and baseball seems about as far away right now as 14,000 seems for the Dow Jones. :D

Oh, our redesigned NFBC site will be live hopefully on Jan. 15th. It's a great looking site that will define who we are better and will provide features that allow me to update text easier. We dropped the ball on football, but all sides agree this look and the new features will be better all around. I'm still pushing for individual data when you click on an owner's name with all NFBC past history and addressing your MY TEAMS pages with links for each year, each sport, etc. That's all in the works with a deadline to get all this done by Draft Day and then carry over to the NFFC site. Stay tuned.

As the guy who was "lucky" enough to get Kazmir at 8.14 I think Greg has the projections right. 200+ k's seems right on. ;)

in the scl draft last night do you believe pedroria warrants top 20 consideration??? side note.....how do signups(after today) compare to last year.....are you still feeling weiters love??? seems as though others are loving as well...10th rd last night...wow...is he this years longoria?? Yeah, Pedroia is Top 20 worthy for all the reasons I mentioned last night. If he gets 600+ ABs again and hits anywhere around .310, man, that really helps a team batting average. Then add in the runs and the steals and the moderate power from a very weak position, and what's not to like? Hey, didn't I say that a lot on the AFL Panel?? :D

Weiters in the Top 150 is a bargain. You saw him. He's HUGE and this kid will hit. Not as much as Longoria, but from the C spot he will have a solid impact. He will go earlier than the 10th round come Draft Day.

We are about 25 main event signups behind where we were last year at this time, but I don't blame anyone for waiting a little longer to sign up this year because of the economy and I also think we'll get more last minute signups with the online option than we've had in years past. Plus we have one extra week to get signups this year because of the later Opening Day. Today we added about 10 main event signups, so I'm not worried about where we are compared to last year. I still see lots of interest in the auctions, Ultimates and Supers, and I feel good about selling out our debut Online Championship this year and building a new product with that. So we'll see, but I still feel good.
We've seen another catcher come through big in his rookie year, granted, it was 16 years ago, Mike Piazza, hitting .318 with 35 homers and 112 rbi's. Does this kid have that kind of talent? I don't know.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ramon Hernandez hit more homers and rbi's this year than Wieters and he could be taken with a much later pick.

It's just not the safest play to take a catcher early. Imagine if Jeff Clement never was brought up last year? Would we be talking about him as a potential 10th rounder as he mashed AAA pitching in the same way Wieters rocked A and AA pitching. And we all know how well Clement did when he was brought up. He was horrible.

My guess is, when spring training comes, Wieters' coaches will want him to focus more on learning how to handle their staff and calling a game than hitting. It's tough to expect a bigger year than .280-20-75 unless of course, he's Mike Piazza.
"Hit a home run - put your head down, drop the bat, run around the bases, because the name on the front is more - a lot more important than the name on the back."

Ryne Sandberg (my favorite player of all-time)

So that's what that pick was about!

Yeah, but Villanueva won't be the first guy I drop -- I'm not convinced that the Brewers will be as judicious with Hoffman's innings as the Padres were and I am even less convinced Hoffman can handle an increased workload - 46 games, 43 IP with no major DL time is a concern, as is a rising HR-rate with Petco as his backdrop.

I'd bet that Hoffman out-saves Broxton.
