Any Interest In A Friday AM Las Vegas Draft??

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Jan 26, 2009 8:22 am

I'll blame this one on Bob Mazur!! :D Bob doesn't compete in the auction leagues, yet he's planning on coming to Las Vegas on Thursday for the full weekend of enjoyment and was interested in adding another live draft outside of the crammed Saturday and Sunday schedules. I'm all for it, but Thursday night is a travel day for some folks and Friday is filled with the auction leagues.

I could add a Thursday night draft, but I like our social gathering in the sportsbook too much to do that!! :D Honestly, if there was enough interest in a Thursday night draft I'd do it, but I still think that's too much of a travel day for some.

So I thought about this a bit and realized that there are probably a few folks who would do another draft on Friday morning if I offered it. I won't even throw out a dollar amount as we could do it as a $500 Satellite League or a $1,000 Satellite League or even as a $2,500 Super League. Whatever the group wants. Or nothing at all while we run the live NL Auctions.

Anyway, this is just food for thought in Las Vegas where my crazies always seem to want to draft. We only have the NL Auction Leagues on Friday morning and even if we get three of those going, I know we have a room or two left over for another draft or two. Feel free to chime in if you have any interest and we'll figure out the price point and payouts later. Sound good?

And no problem if this doesn't fly. It was just a thought...and one I can blame on Bob Mazur! :D

Jeff And yes, we could hook up folks by phone if it's $1K or higher. With the live drafts we have three draft facilitators and the costs for that and the draft boards and the room and the phone hookup, so there's more involved. But I'd make that work at the levels you mentioned.

A baseball DC would take 6+ hours and maybe even 7. In football we draft 364 players and in baseball we draft 675. That would be tough live with stickers.

I think I'll stick with an ol' fashioned straight 30-round draft on Friday morning and just see if we can line up 15 die-hards who need another fix. :D

Since I instigated this, I'm obviously on board if there's interest and flexible about the money and time. Blame it on me now, but if you win, you can thank me later. Breakfast at the Imperial Palace work's for me

Bob, how about a morning Mixed Auction! ;)

Yup, I'll second Terry's suggestion. But you can still treat to the IP, Spartacus.

Gotta give the Hard Rock Cafe a quick visit AFTER the Auctions on Friday. Gambler's Special at Mr Lucky's for $7.77. Not on the menu - Steak & Shrimp.

Aren't there enough auctions on Friday already? I admit that I'm fascinated by them. Last year Terry, I actually sat in on your Ultimate Auction for a few rounds with Lindy (Hinkleman), who rumor has it will be splitting the breakfast tab at the IP this year with Ken! I would have stayed longer but much like my wife often does, Greg whispered in my ear that people were starting to complain that I was making too much noise :D Seriously though, I enjoyed watching it unfold, the skillful way Lindy organized his material and as an aside came to understand why Brady Tinker is held in such high regard as an auctioneer. I got the basics of the format, but the nuance? Let me just say that I think my schooling might be expensive.

My first choice for Friday is a draft. Although, I'll say that if no interest develops in that option, I could reconsider my decision to wait until 2010 to enter the (mixed) auction world. It would depend in great measure on what the league 'tuition' would be. If we use Mr. Lucky's $7.77 "Gambler's Special" as a baseline, I'll keep my ear to the ground. But only if steak and shrimp are on the menu :D

Bob - if you drum up enough support for a $650 Mixed in the AM & take part. The steak & shrimp are on me. But you are still getting the IP tab on Saturday. Who am I to go against the wishes of a Pig Farmer! ;)

I second the Brady Tinker comment. However, Brady is only as good in that Auctioneer position because of his two secret weapons - Jan & Claire Gustafson. They have worked as a team now for years. I think Brady has it written into his Auctioneer contract that girls must work at his Auction.

Last year, for the NFFC, an auction facillitator wandered into the auction room that Brady was scheduled to work. I believe it was Claire that entered the room first to find this "helper" moving in on her Brady league. Claire politely and calmly pointed out that she was in the wrong room.

By the time Brady entered the room, the unknowing facillitator was nowhere to be found. The Gustafson girls had taken there rightful place at the table to help carry Mr Tinker along.

The helpful facillitator has never been seen or heard from again. Brady is nothing without his Gustafson girls! ;)

Spy I suspect if we ge're able to but one together Spy, it may end up being a multi-city creation. It's still pretty early though, the interest may pick up as we get closer
