Friday Afternoon Chat
We have more than 50 people on the boards and we're putting the finishing touches on our second baseball issue so if folks are interested I'll be here to chat for awhile this afternoon. We can talk baseball, the NFBC, whatever's on your mind.
So who's with me?

Granderson or Bruce? 1. I'd go Price. I think he has higher upside because he's guaranteed to start all season.
2. Papelbon. But you can't go wrong either way.
3. Beltran.
4. Granderson

Tom, with the offense that the Yankees have, dont you think it would be prudent to put Gardner in center and rotate the other three corner outfielders (Nady,Damon, Matsui and Swisher) between LF, RF and DH? Gardner would provide great defense and great speed from the ninth spot in the order. Also, with the age and injury history of Damon and Matsui I would think having four guys for three spots could keep everyone fresh. I really have no desire to see Damon or Swisher in center.

As of today it looks like it will be Swisher in CF. I'm not sure that's the right way to go but they have a glut of outfielders and they have to figure out where to play them all. I do think it will be good to keep everyone fresh like you said but if everyone is healthy I think their best four OFs are Damon, Matsui, Nady and Swisher. I'm not a big Swisher fan but he would bring another power threat to their lineup (and plenty of strikeouts too).

But the Yankees are back in fantasy mode. They're grabbing players and not paying any heed to whether they have a team. That's failed them in the past and it wouldn't surprise me if it fails them again this season.

Gracias! 1. Kouzmanoff. I think his ceiling is higher.
2. Ellsbury. He'll run and run and run and is on a great team.
3. Morneau will provide better all-around numbers. He's the superior hitter. But if you put Gonzalez in a hitter's park I think he could deliver 40 HRs consistently.

I'll add that the only ones I'd chase for potential saves are the first three. Not sure the rest will be of much help in that category.

I see Gordon with a much better ceiling than Kouz.
I project Alex to mature into a .500 + slugger with 15 SB potential...both much better than Kevin.
I also see Milledge breaking out this year. I think they figured out how to hit MLB pitching as 2008 wore on, and it will show in 2009.

Anyone can pick a player from Boston, but every year there is a "hot" team that puts together a surprising season and many players on that team seem to exceed expectations. Such as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
What team is it gonna be this year?

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

~Lance But will Gordon ever hit for much average?

What is the Kessinich effect (i.e. something you've been telling people about baseball for years but you can't quite get most people to believe you)? For example, the Doughboy effect would be that fat dudes don't get hurt as often.

Seriously, not sure I have anything like that when it comes to baseball. It's possible I can't get people to believe I do this for a living. But I do. And I like it.

What team is it gonna be this year? I have a gut feeling the Marlins offense will have value.

~Lance [/QUOTE]The Fish may be the only team in baseball that has only one player hit above .260 as regular players.
