Shawn Childs and BaseballMafia.com Live Chat Tuesday

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:49 am

We're glad to announce that the BaseballMafia.com crew will be live on the NFBC Message Boards on Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m. EST, Feb. 10th. Shawn Childs will take the lead on the Q&A session and will gladly give some tips on how to be successful in this unique 15-team format. Heck, he might even give some tips on how to win the 12-team NFBC Online Championship format.

I think Jesse Heron, Dustin Ashby and Eddie Gillis will be online and available to answer questions as well. Eddie is the only member of our crew to win Ultimate Leagues in both baseball and football and if Dom can talk as fast as Eddie can talk he will be full of valuable information!! :D Jesse and Dustin have been in the NFBC every year since 2004 and hopefully they will join us again in Las Vegas for our baseball event. They also own the WCOFF and can hopefully forecast a promising summer for all of us involved in this Wild, Wild West of an industry called fantasy football.

Thanks all for joining the live chat format and I'll ask all NFBC members to load up this thread in the next 24 hours with questions and let Shawn and the guys type some answers in ahead of time. This should be among the best live chats of the year on our boards.

Rick Wilton will be live on Thursday, Feb. 12th from 2-3 p.m. EST and we'll have a live chat with four CreativeSports.com writers on Tuesday, March 17th starting at 2 p.m. EST. Should be a fun week of live chats. Thanks all.

Shawn,

Between NFBC, Satellites, and local/home leagues how many fantasy baseball teams are you involved in this year?

Doesn't it make Sunday's insane with FAAB?

Thanks

Hello Ken,

You know Shawn won't answer these questions. Your team will out favor mine. Just like last year when you took all my money.

Shawn, 3 questions.

1. After reading GG's chat from Monday night, I was wondering what is your system for making player projections? Like GG, I also use Shandler as a starting point and look at the previous 3 years stats.

2. My co-manager and I have debated when to draft speed. Do you try to draft speed early (i.e. if 160 steals is your target, do you draft 1/3 of your speed in the first 3 rds?), or wait until later? Do you prefer to get multiple 20-20 guys, or one 50-steal player later i.e. Tavarez.

3. What are your thoughts on when to draft your catchers this year? Advantages or disadvantages to drafting one of the M&M boys or Soto in the 4th or 5th rd?

thanks, Rich.

Thanks for taking questions, Baseball Mafia! Please, take a cannoli and a cream soda!

Which of these former wunderkinds will live up to their former billing/hype this year?

Billy Bulter

Felix Pie

Jeff Clement

BTW, looking forward to saying hello in Vegas. I might be flying in Thursday evening, so maybe I can catch up to the group in the sports book.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

1- Out of the following who is most likely to exceed expectations and who will fall short and why?

2- What number in your rotation would you like each to be?

Billingsley

Lester

Garza

Gallardo

Price

Do you have a maximum number of risky selections you would take for an entire draft? (risky defined as young and unproven or injury)

Shawn, you have mentioned the 75-75 draft strategy after 3 rounds, do you feel this is the best chance of winning the overall prize?

Also, I know a lot depends on who falls to you, but assuming, you get out of first 3, with 75/75, what do you look for in rounds 4-6 and then 7-9?

Eddie "Hello me, it's me again!" Gillis - you seem to win a good share of auction leagues, as well as Ultamites, etc, where it's one league and no overall prize (Congrats on that!)

How does your strategy differ when assembling your roster - do you look to punt any categories or focus more heavily on hitter over pitching, etc?

Shawn,

What round do you pull the trigger on a guy that was an early round choice last year but injuries killed his season. Specifically, if still sitting there, what round can you no longer pass:

Tulo -

Bedard -

Thanks - Pete
OK - So I'm not as good as I thought I was; but at least I am consistent.
