NFBC Ultimate Is Being Proposed

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Nov 22, 2004 5:15 am

Okay, I haven't gotten too involved in the talk of a high, high-stakes fantasy baseball league because I didn't think there would be serious interest in it. But now that we have at least eight people talking about a $5,000 entry fee league, I thought I'd put some serious thoughts down and see how serious everyone is.

Let's just call this NFBC Ultimate for now and see what the timetable looks like. Friday and Saturday are filled up that weekend as the NFBC needs to have a full day set aside for that draft. So if we did a live draft for NFBC Ultimate, I'd propose doing it on Sunday, March 20th. Let's propose for now organizing the Ultimate draft/auction for 10 a.m. PST on that Sunday and see what happens.

As for prize money, let's plan on a 15-team league, whether that be a Mixed Auction League or a Mixed Draft. Under that scenario, let's propose the following payout structure:

1st: $40,000

2nd: $15,000

3rd: $7,500

No partner fees proposed. Right now it's a proposed 83.33% payback, which doesn't include licensing, stats, meeting rooms, facilitators and possibly phones. We can tweak this once we know all of that, but this is a good starting point.

Ideally, it would be great if we could get everyone in Las Vegas, but if not we'll see what we can do to get this done via teleconference. That's not ideal, but let's keep talking about this. I don't want to take any registrations for this, but if you're serious about the 5K, say so on this thread and list where you will likely be drafting from. Then we'll plan accordingly.

For the 5K Auction League, the following have shown an interest on another thread:

1. Science69

2. Lajolla (or draft)

3. Bags

4. Captain Hook

5. Eddie Gillis (or draft)

6. Jim Ferrari

7. Lewis Lipsey (or draft)

8. Wayne Barber

9. Sack

10. C.C.'s Desperados

11. King of Queens

12. Brad Feinberg

13. James Bores (or draft)

14. Michael Fishman

15. Meat Loaf/Jeffrey Price

16. Kelly Uganski, Muskegan, Michigan

17. David Longood

For the 5K Draft, the following have shown an interest on another thread:

1. Stanley Kaye

2. Aaron Seefeldt

3. Nevadaman

4. George Kleeman

5. Will Robertson

6. Jason DuPonte

7. Rick Thomas

8. Dyv

9. Eric Peden, Maroon & White

10. Brett Washburn

11. KLN

12. Terry Haney (or auction)

13. David DiDonato

14. Howard Markowitz

15. Rick Kanfer/Donn Johnson

16. TickyBurden

Okay, I'm just trying to centralize this discussion. Anyone serious about this can check in here and we'll see how it plays out. Thanks everyone.

You can put me down for the 5K snake draft also. In fact, that would be my preference! As you might have guessed, I will definitely be participating in Las Vegas.

JimWiz is also interested in the 5K serpentine draft and he will be in Las Vegas on Sunday, March 20th to draft live. I've updated the list above.

Eddie Gillis had a great first year in the NFBC and he just called to say that he's interested in the 5K Mixed Auction League, although he would do either the draft or the auction. He will be in New York for the NFBC, so for now we'll list him under the 5K Auction League. That would put us at six for now. Feel free to call me or post here if you are also interested in this ultimate of fantasy leagues.

Does anyone have an interest in possibly joining forces for this league.

$5k may be a bit steep for me (actually, the argument with the wife over $5k might be too steep -- yes, that makes me a wuss).

My fault as I forgot to add George Kleeman to the 5K Draft League. George told me two weeks ago that he would do this if we got enough owners and I forgot to add him to our list. Welcome aboard George and we'll find a way to do this between owners in all three cities if we have to. The interest is stronger than I thought when we first talked on the phone. Oh, and I got your new e-mail address, so you're good to go. Thanks.

1 in 15 chance at $40,000. Nice.

Greg, I would have to do this from New York, but count me in.

KOQ, you are a loyal NFBC member and one heckuva competitor. Do you want the Auction League menu or the Draft Menu at 5K? Just let me know and I'll add you to the list. Yes, it's likely that we'll be combining cities and we'll figure out how we'll do that later. But I don't see it as a major problem for either league.

Some guys have asked if they can split ownership of their 5K teams and have two principal owners. I will certainly look into that, but I don't see that as a problem for this league. We're obviously not taking payment for this now and if we do get to that point, we'll create a special application for these leagues where hopefully we can split the winnings and tax claims if you request it that way.

Thanks guys. I had planned on drinking all day Sunday in Las Vegas and betting on every college game left on the card. Now it looks like I may be conducting another draft or two!!! But it's hard to complain about this one. :D

Okay, we now have seven interested members for the $5,000 Mixed Auction League on Sunday, March 20th as Jim Ferrari of San Diego said he would compete. With a goal of attracting 15 owners for this event, we're getting closer. Thanks Jim and I've added you to the list above.

Oh, oh, now this is getting serious as we got our second signup for the $5,000 Entry Fee Mixed Auction League. Louis Lipsey of Los Angeles, California said he will gladly participate in the Auction League on Sunday, March 20th and I've added him to the list above. That makes 8 for this Auction League, with the goal of reaching 15. Let's keep it going.

Will Robertson is also interested in the $5K League, doing either the Auction League or the Draft from New York. I've listed four guys under the Auction League in the thread above who would do the Draft if there's more interest there. So we have 14 guys total interested right now and nine could be for the Auction League or the Draft League. We'll keep taking names and figure this out as we get closer to Draft Day. Thanks everyone.

NFBC Ultimate Is Being Proposed

Post by RoShamBo King » Thu Dec 09, 2004 5:21 pm

I'm pretty interested in a $5K draft league (assuming I can get my old partner on board). But a house cut of $12,500 (16.66%) for running one league seems like a big slice of the pie, so the pot-odds will affect my decision. But I love the idea, and I could draft from either Vegas or NYC if I participate.

Greg, I'd be happy to discuss further by phone or email. Glad there's movement on this!

You've got it and I'll show you how licensing, room rentals and staffing will take away from that total, but I have absolutely no problem with you bringing this up. We have proposed an Ultimate League in our football contest and the same point was brought up there, too. When all is said and done, it's going to be around 8% I would estimate.

How can someone spend 5 grand on a contest than worry about the cut? If you want to play the best you can do it at the main event. If your trying to prove what a high roller you are than spend the money and shut your trap about the cost!!!!

Okay, I had a good talk with RoShamBo King and I think we have another entrant for the $5K Draft. I'm tentatively adding him to the list for now as every commitment is tentative anyway. Great talking with you and thanks for possibly joining the NFBC family for the first time.

Jason Dupont of Norwood, Massachusetts is definitely interested in the $5K Draft and I've added him to the list. We now have eight people for the draft and another four who would do either the auction or the draft, so we're obviously getting closer to our goal of 15 league members. Thanks for contacting us Jason and we'll see you in Las Vegas for either the NFBC or the NFBC Ultimate. Either way, you're good to go.

Greg, since we basically have 12 for the $5K draft now, doesn't this mean it's a definite go? You had said that you'd do it with 12-15 guys... ;)

I would say that we are as close to a go as we can get. Now, nobody has officially signed up and given the $5K, but I trust every one of these guys and I know every one is seriously interested in this. This looks like a go, Aaron.

Once we hit 15 for either the Auction or the Draft, I'll contact everyone who has tentatively committed and finalize it, but so far so good. What progress we've made in one year, huh folks?

Rick Thomas has thrown his hat into the ring for the $5K Draft on Sunday, March 20th, thus becoming the ninth person to commit for the NFBC Ultimate. We also have four other owners who said they would do either the draft or the auction, so we really do have 13 guys who are interested in competing in this debut event. Pretty wild, huh?

Thanks Rick and I've added you to the list for now. Let's see how this plays out.

I haven't officially marked him down yet, but Emmett Ruland has shown an interest in the NFBC Ultimate Draft as well, which would give us 10 owners for sure and possibly 14 with the four owners who said they would do either one. I will have to contact those four owners soon as I don't want them to get shut out of the auction if we fill this first. We can do one auction and one draft if the interest is there and it obviously is for the draft.

Emmett, you give me the word and I'll add you to the list.
