I know my relievers are weak, but at least I have 2 closers! ;)

Thoughts? Billy, as a fellow league-mate, I figured I would offer my two-cents. You are very strong in the infield and have a decent OF, which should provide you with formidable power related numbers with some question marks in the sb area. Your first 3 starters have nice upside and the rest of your staff has some risk, but is fine. The two areas for concern are your bullpen and bench with several injury/performance risks. All in all, your team will offer tough competition this season. Good luck!

NY League 1, Pick 12

Probable OD lineup

C1 K. Shoppach (16)

C2 J. Clement (23)

1B M. Teixeira (1)

2B A. Ram (4)

SS S. Drew (6)

3B T. Wigg (17)

CI B. Butler (14)

MI M. Fontenot (19)

OF1 A. Soriano (2)

OF2 J. Werth (8)

OF3 A. Ethier (9)

OF4 P. Burrell (12)

OF5 S. Soo-Choo (13)

UT B. Gardner (22)

SP1 J. Shields (5)

SP2 J. Johnson (10)

SP3 K. Slowey (11)

SP4 A. Sonnanstine (18)

SP5 P. Maholm (20)

SP6 A. Laffey (26)

SP7 N. Adenhart (27)

RP1 J. Devine (15)

RP2 J. Arrendondo (24)

Bench

Arod (3)

M. Wieters (7)

J. Smoltz (21)

E. Bonifacio (25)

J. Lewis (28)

J. Zumaya (29)

N. Schierholtz (30)

Offense: Went in targeting power and avg early and add some speed late. Tex at 12 was a surprise to me. With Soriano there in the 2nd said goodbye to Arod. He came back around in the 3rd, no decision there. I think T Wig is a nice placeholder for Arod and being OF eligible helps. Speed is the biggest challenge. Will likely start Bonifacio instead of Fontenot to bank some SB's at MI early. I believe Gardner will start the year at CF for the Yanks, again just hoping to grab some steals early there.

Pitching: Hoped for 2 anchors early. I was looking to pair up Shields with Vazquez, but he went in the 6th so I waited. I was not targeting closers, which was good because they were going at a fast clip. I'm sure Devine's health concerns let him fall to the 15th, but I wanted at least one guy to keep a zero out of that category to start. A lot of work to do here, but feel I got some decent innings in the mid to late rounds.

Bench: Crowded to start the year. I wanted quality at catcher, but that went early so I reached for Wieters in the 7th. Getting Werth coming back around in the 8th made me feel better about that pick. I love Smoltz in the 21st, he needs to come through with some quality innings. Both Lewis and Zumaya should get some saves during the year. I hope I can keep them on the bench long enough for that to happen. We were 5 1/2 hours in when I made my 30th pick, Schierholtz popped up, should have made a better pick there.

Thank you to Tom and the NFBC crew for another great show in NY.

All comments are welcome and Good Luck to everyone this year.

Since most of CHI4 is already up, here's mine from the 6th slot:

1. Sizemore (OF) - it was between him and Braun, and in my opinion Cleveland is going to be very strong this year. DeRosa is a great addition, and with Martinez and Hafner back in the line up, Sizemore has lots more protection at the plate. Hopefully that adds up to a better BA this year.

2. Roberts (2B) - As Zola and many, many others have noted, 2B is thin this year. Roberts meant that I didn't have to worry too much about steals from here on out either. Then take the BA and he becomes a great complement to Sizemore in the first.

3. A. Gonzalez (1B) - Even on a bad offensive team, he puts up great numbers. Each year is an improvement on the last.

4. Webb (SP) - Starting pitchers were going very early here, and I needed to get a rock.

5. Maggs (OF) - Strong BA, and some good pop. If DET turns it around this year, he could be big.

6. M. Young (SS, soon to be 3B) - At this point my plan was coming together perfectly, as you will see at pick 15 :D I was really surprised to have gotten the first 6 picks that I had planned.

7. Fuentes (CL) - They were flying off the board ahead of me and I had to get one that would result in more than the 3 saves Soriano gave me last year.

8. Ryan (CL) - Let's just make sure to not fall into the "Get one closer and count on FAAB for another" trap like last year.

9. Napoli (C) - The only pick that I really regret but our draft was going so slow and I was about to pee in my pants... I probably could have waited a couple of more rounds and got him. But I was just thinking about how far the bathroom was and how long it would take for me to get there!

10. Cantu (3B) - Part of the Young/15th pick plan. All he has to do is give me ten good games at the beginning of the season and then he can go to the bench so I can see which Cantu shows up in 2009.

11. S. Baker (SP) - Need another strong SP since so many were gone already. The two best left at the time were Baker and Slowey. I took Baker and Stan took Slowey right after me.

12. Bradley (OF) - Got to have a player with attitude on your team. It just makes the season more enjoyable. IMHO, very good value at 12 if the Cubs are as strong as everyone predicts.

13. Maybin (OF) - Filling out the OF and has all of the potential of living up to the hype.

14. D. Young (OF) - I said it then, and I will say it again, "This IS the year!" Hopefully, he will have made the adjustment.

15. Andrus - I got the memo :D Whether I win or not, I am least proud of the fact that I can show a little restraint and stick to a plan after 6 years in the NFBC (well, maybe not in the auctions). Young, Cantu, and Andrus all came together exactly where I wanted them.

16. Clement (C) - Too much excitement at the plan coming together and then I might have made my second mistake. The way this draft was unfolding, I could have waited very late and still got good catchers.

17. Sherrill (CL) - Three closers are much better than just one, and there were still a lot of good SP hanging around.

18. Guthrie (SP) - #1 starter on possibly the worst team in baseball this year. He's one of those good start - bad start kind of guys. Get the rhythm and he can be an asset. Miss the rhythm, and well... You know the rest.

19. Kotchman (1B) - Didn't want a Brave, didn't need a Brave, breaking the first rule of fantasy baseball... But I needed a good corner and he was the best of what was left (at least according to that ADP report, and that is a whole 'nother story).

20. A. Galarraga (SP) - With most every spot filled, it was time to start taking the best pitchers available. Maybe he will, maybe he won't... That's what FAAB is for ;)

21. Fields (UTL) - I felt very good about the team and after studying everyone's roster so far during the break, I knew that there was a ton of talent left at all of the positions. Fields was a gamble, but a safe bet IMO.

22. Snell (SP) - Liked this pick until today. The Reds A and AA players killed him.

23. C. Buchholz (SP) - Needed some strikeouts and he was there. I stuck with him a little too long last year. I won't be fooled again.

24. R. Sweeney (OF) - I am very surprised that he was left at this stage of the game. Very good, solid bat from a young player.

25. Schafer (OF) - The only Brave that I was going to take... Stay off of the steroids, kiddo!

26. Andy LaRoche (3B) - Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Right now, it's very iffy.

27. Brett Anderson (SP) - Good reports, some arm fatigue, but who else does OAK have to pitch? And, he will get some K's.

28. G. Sanchez (1B) - I was in Chicago, not Las Vegas... I had to gamble on something!

29. T. Buchholz - Why not just get a corner on the market of Buchholz's? Besides he has closer potential. Street will end up injured, and Corpas won't be able to hold down the job. Buchholz will get a handful of SV this year and he has very good ratios.

30. ANDREW EFFIN' MILLER - Just because I need a good excuse for when my team finishes in the cellar!!!

Chicago Draft 3 - Pick 9

C - Pierzynski, John Baker

1B - Votto, Nick Johnson

2B - Jose Lopez, Kelly Johnson

3B - Longoria, Mora, Crede

SS - Peralta, Hairston, Brandon Wood

OF - Sizemore, Ellsbury, Ethier, Spilborghs, Church, Francisco

SP - Greinke, Danks, Baker, Garza, Price, Galarraga, Wellemeyer, Edwin Jackson, Homer Bailey

RP - Rivera, Sherrill, Isringhausen

We were thrilled to start off Sizemore, Longoria, Ellsbury and we didn't have to deviate from all plan all that much for the rest of the draft.

I have team 14 in NY1. Ran projections for our league. To make them realistic, I have A-Rod and Wieters in your starting lineup. As I see it, you have a good foundation to build from. Saves and Steals are your key areas of concern. (I initially wrote that strikeouts were also a problem, but I see now that the projections for your staff are low because of a couple spots with just partial seasons .. e.g. - John Smoltz. I don't see K's as a strength, but it's not a big problem area either.)

I think we were all a bit punch-drunk towards the end of what had to have been the longest draft in NFBC history. Schierholtz is an OK 30th round flier; he has some power, but playing time is the big question. I couldn't believe how quickly starting pitchers and base stealers were drafted.

Chicago 3 Pick 10

*I was given 14 hours of warning that I would be going to the NFBC to draft because the owner had an unforseen emergency. I had been planning for my 15 team and working on pick 15. I also had this week to finish my round 20 planning. His son came to keep me company, kept me laughing, and was feeding me 7-8 Jim Beam & Cokes. So I was a little loaded at the end. Pardon me for not having the complete roster. Thru user error, I messed up my draft software and was inputting people into the wrong teams too late for my drunk self to notice.

*** I would like some feedback on this team PLEASE. I am feeling so/so on it and hoped for better because I was drafting for somebody else.

(Incomplete Roster)

I want you to post that 1st/2nd round draft up here. That is ridiculous!
First of all, Rollins and Teixeira are incredible value at the start of the draft. They both belong in the top 11 picks, IMO. I would be interested to know if EITHER of them lasted to pick 13 in more than one other league. To pick 13 and 18 and get both of them is a great start.

As for the feedback on the overall team, I think that after the first 3 you picked a lot of players that I am not big on, so I wouldn't be really high on the overall group. But, to start with those 3 stud infielders.....that is a team that can compete to win your league.

One final point - it will be interesting to see the reactions of some players once all the draft results are posted. There seemed to be a small whisper before draft day that signing up late allowed owners to avoid being placed in leagues with the most decorated owners from past seasons - most of whom signed up earlier and were not part of the mixed league. To be honest, I don't know exactly how the leagues were formed.....ie. if the final 9 Vegas signups and final 6 NY signups were the guys in the mixed city league. If they were - and the draft looks poorly done - it might convince an experienced owner to wait until the last minute next year in order to avoid the "stiffer" competition. I wouldn't be tht guy - but $100K is a lot of money!

Personally, that may be the best start I have ever seen. When the NFBC ADP for 2009 comes out, I would not be surprised if you got Tex and Youk later than anyone else.

Congratulations!

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I know my relievers are weak, but at least I have 2 closers! ;)

Thoughts? Billy, great to meet you. Thanks for all the good work the night before at the $1300 auction. I thought our league was surreal. I think yours is one of the top teams. Both of us are going to be stuck looking for closers all year I am guessing! Great luck this year, I expect Quahogs to be just brutal on us!

Regards,

Spyhunter
Chris,

Great meeting you as well, and thanks for the kind words.

Your team might be the most dangerous team in the NFBC IF everything works. For the record, I think Hamels will be fine, but "Manny being Manny" (even without the injury) and A-Rod are a little too risky for me.

You are right though, this is a STACKED league, and Jupinka will be a beast on the FAAB I am sure.

Best of luck!
