Saturday - Drafting from 15 - Strategy Questions
This Saturday, I will be drafting in another 15 team league that has 4 other NFBC guys in it, 5-6 people who have some clue, and the rest are magazine drafters more or less.
After the NFBC, I walked away a little confused about my strategy into this upcoming event. We use the same format as NFBC, but charge about 1/2 so our friends can afford to play.
-I would love to hear your thoughts on a strategy.
-I would love your thoughts on my strategy
-I would appreciate thoughts on round 20+ GEMS
My strategy is from 15th pick:
1-2 Draft Big 1B and Chase Utley/Ian Kinsler
3-4 Draft OF/OF or OF / Alexi
5-6 Draft OF/OF or OF/SS if I dont get alexi
7-10 Draft SP/SP/CL/SP
11-12 Draft OF/CI/MI
I really would like the following players:
Matt Kemp / Corey Hart / J.Vasquez / Grienke / Diasuke / Scott Baker / E Dukes / Fred Lewis
Decent strategy? Obviously I am hoping for Lewis and Dukes later.
Thanks in advance.

no chance at kemp in 3rd
Saturday - Drafting from 15 - Strategy Questions
virtually no chance at Kinsler/Utley or a big 1b in the 1.15 and 2.01 slots All will be gone by then. If some delusional owner drafts an SP in the first round you may have one of them push to you, but it would take 2 'mistakes' to get more than 1 of those guys.

Having picked from the 15th, Utley and/or Kinsler are likely not there for you. They should be gone by the 13th pick. If you want Kemp, it will have to be in the 2nd. And if you want a big 1B, you are likely reaching for Fielder, Berkman or Morneau, all the others (Pujols, Cabrera, and Howard) are gone by late/mid 1st.

Saturday - Drafting from 15 - Strategy Questions
1. Utley and Kinsler were both taken before 15 in just about all NFBC leagues on Saturday, so I doubt that you will get either one (unless your competition is weak).
2. No way on Kemp at pick 45. He won't be there at 35.
3. You might want to consider picking 2 closers before you leave round 10 (unless you are a guy who likes to gamble on saves).
4. Try not to take too many OF in the first 10 rounds (just 2-3 tops IMO). Because you pick on the turn in a large league, it will be hard to control your picks of shallower positions later in the draft. You could get screwed and watch all the decent 2B or 3B etc. get drafted. That can't really happen with OF.

Thanks in advance. A couple of thoughts-
Posting and asking for strategies on an NFBC Board for a draft with four NFBC players...Not a good idea.
Before the draft has started, you are hogtieing yourself by position, why?
If you like Kemp, the first two picks are your only oppurtunity, same with Hart at 3,4.
Of course if any of the other four are viewing and also like those players, they may not be available even that early.

So, lets say you guys are 100% right about Big 1B and Kinsler/Utley:
Should I move more into OF/OF then SP/C?
I would love Utley/Alexi at 2b/SS but that seems like a pipe dream.
I may have tunnel vision now and would love to hear your strategy.
The other NFBC peeps dont ever go on the message board. They dont even know about it.

I kind of agree that you can't hogtie yourself, but I certainly plan-like I'll take an OF and pair him with 1B if I can get Beltran there. If not, I'll do this other thing. I have to know what I'm getting myself into when I sit down rather than playing by ear.
There are still OF's with huge value there. Manny, Soriano, Kemp, maybe even Beltran spring to mind, but I think taking two makes it really tough to fortify your other postions later.
Oddly, I wouldn't consider A-Rod later in the second round, but I might consider him at the turn simply because you are in a tough position to take even one good non-OF in either the first or the second. Plan to see what you can do with him kind of like Dyv did on the other thread.

WHY are you worried about what position your picks will play?? Draft the two best offensive players you can for your first two picks and then see what is available and adjust.
I agree with the other posters and even the magazine drafters would shed your "strategy" as you have it laid out.

I had the 15th pick in the main event, in what I would consider to be a very knowledgeable league - hopefully yours won't be so smart
My first 4 picks were:
Arod
Longoria
Granderson
Votto

We drafted out of spot #15 in NY5 and got Utley (we were obviously pumped), so there's a chance he'll be there, albeit slim.
Like the others have said, no shot at Kemp unless you grab him at 16. We took Holliday at 16 but you could go a lot of directions at that point. I don't think I'd take a guy like Fielder there though.
My biggest advice is to take who you want when you have the chance, don't worry too much about reaching. You've got 30 picks to wait for so it's a long time to sit back and watch players fly off the board.
Good luck!
