NFBC Champions Mock Draft Results

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Dec 28, 2004 11:24 am

We are hosting our NFBC Champions Mock Draft tonight on Mock Draft Central.com, featuring all 13 NFBC league champions from 2004, our three auction league champions (two won both) and the next highest point finisher. Those 15 guys are mock drafting right now, but I thought it would be fun to provide the first couple rounds of results to everyone. The complete draft will be published in the first issue of Fantasy Sports Magazine and we'll send the final results privately to all 2004 and 2005 NFBC members via e-mail.

David Ortiz as the first pick in round 2 takes me a bit by surprise. I see no real shockers in round 1.

The Champions Mock Draft ended in about 3 1/2 hours, which is amazing for 23 rounds. Great job guys. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who participated to see how you felt it went and if you learned anything. Should be a fun year and this was a GREAT kickoff event. Results will be sent out to all NFBC members within the next week.

True, but how could Oswalt slip to 57? I sure hope that happens in my draft! Piazza, the most overrated pig in MLB, is a case where certain people refuse to believe that he totally sucks now, despite 5 straight years of serious decline. He would be questionable at 174, much less 74, IMHO!

I think everyone did a good job. I know its not easy doing a mock draft this early and having every yahoo pick on it. Of course this is from the guy who picked Ricky Williams in the football mock draft. As far as Piazza I wouldn't call him a pig. Over rated maybe. You'd be hard press to find many catchers who've put up his stats over the years.

I agree with Walla Walla about Piazza. Sure he's slipped but he's still the 3rd or 4th best fantasy player for his position.

Brad Lidge picked before Mariano? I agree but it surprises me a bit, even if Mariano was the third closer taken. Passing of a torch in closer-land maybe?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Greg,

It's obvious some of the mockers had questionable picks at best. I believe they did so just to "throw off" anyone trying to use the mock draft to help slot players. Sort of turns the mock into a mockery. Going forward I suggest you have a prize for the best mocker. Run the stats at the end and see who the best is...give em 1 or 2K. do something similar for football. shame on some of the mockers. thanks.

I have seen two mock drafts so far and in both Carl Crawford was drafted in the first round. I understand the power of cheese , er, steals but I do find how Carl has jumped into the first round as one of the more interesting aspects of both drafts.

Strictly in terms of raw value, if you believe Crawford will repeat or better his 2004 numbers, he is worthy of a late first round selection--steals are "worth" that much in terms of raw value.

That said, there are at least three reasons why I would personally pass on him in Round 1, even if he was the highest "valued" player on my board.

1. Steals are a volatile lot (ask Juan Pierre owners). I'm going to project him for at least 45, but will not have the warm and fuzzies when doing so.

2. The 2004 NFBC champions fared the worse in the SB category than the other four hitting categories. You don't need to dominate SBs to win.

3. Other than Crawford, I suspect every other SB guy will go "undervalue" (Podsednik, Pierre, etc). I'd rather get the power guy in round 1 and pick up steals later.

I HEARD GORDON MENTION SOME OF THE MOCKERS MIGHT HAVE MADE A MOCKERY OF THE DRAFT. I HAD THE 4TH PICK , AND MADE EVERY PICK LIKE I WAS PLAYING FOR 100.000 DOLLARS. WE HAD TO RATE THE DRAFT AFTER IT WAS OVER AND I DID HAVE 2 TEAMS I WOULD RATE WITH NOT MUCH OF A CHANCE. I MYSELF WOULD BE VERY UPSET IF I KNEW ANY OF THE TEAMS DIDNT GIVE THEIR BEST.IF THAT DID HAPPEN , THEN SHAME ON YOU. I DID GIVE IT MY ALL , AND THINK MY TEAM IS ONE OF THE BETTEWR TEAMS. MY TOP 3 PICKS SHOLD GO FOR 40 HR'S, AND WAS FORTUNATE TO GET OSWALT WITH PICK 57. DAVID WRIGHT AND CHASE UTTLEY ARE TWO YOUNG PLAYERS WITH GREAT UPSIDE. JUSTIN SPEIR I TOOK HOPING HE CAN GET THE CLOSER JOB IN TOROTO.A GOOD GAMBLE CONSIDERING I GOT HIM IN ROUND 21.

I think the early numbers were based on the Ron Shandler's Forecaster. Being this was a early Mock draft its really hard to put much into it.

Alot will happen before March. I agree with Todd Zola in that I think Crawford is being overrated based on S.B. alone.

AS FOR CRAWFORD HE IS A FIRST ROUND PICK NOW IN ANY LEAGUE. I MYSELF WOULD HAVE HIM AT PICK 8.HIS LAST TWO YEARS SHOW HOW CONSISTENT HE IS.2003 281 BAVG 5 HR 54 RBI AND 55 STEALS. 2004 296 BAVG 11 HR 59 RBI 59 STEALS . IT ALSO SHOWS ME HE DOUBLED HIS HR'S ,MAYBE 15 THIS YEAR AND THE STEALS SHOULD STAY IN THE FIFTY'S. HE'S ONLY 23 AND HASNT HIT HIS PRIME. AS FOR PIERRE HE STILL STOLE 45 BASES SCORED 100 RUNS AND HIT 326. I GOT PIERRE IN THE 3RD ROUND LAST YEAR , AND WAS VERY HAPPY.

Will Carl Crawford have a career similar to Kenny Lofton or does he approach Ricky Henderson?

Will Carl Crawford have a career similar to Kenny Lofton or does he approach Ricky Henderson? I don't like making comparisons like this because you are never really sure just what skills are being compared. In terms of skills, Crawford might not walk as many times in his career as Ricky did in one season. Obviously that's hyperbole, but Crawford will not come close to his patience.

Strictly in terms of numbers, he won't hit for as high an average as Lofton did in his prime, but he still hit well above league average. But I think he'll have more pop than Lofton did in his prime as he continues to mature.

I mocked from the #1 hole and was very pleased with my draft. Pujols at #1 wasn't a choice of comfort, but I'm making the prediction that power will be down heavily this year and Pujols appears to be one of very few non-steroid sluggers.

That and your new position scarcity law for 2005 will be firstbase... (my opinion)

As for Oswalt slipping and closers moving... pitching is always the more speculative arena. I'm not surprised by this at all. I wish he would have fallen a few more spots to me at #60, but only so much I can control ;)

I didn't realize we weren't drafting benches in this draft, so closing out some positions early cost me later for sleepers I wanted.

Clearly I needed some more OF bench help and a backup C and middle infielder
