New Found Respect for MLB Players w/ Injuries

Post by poopy tooth » Sun Apr 19, 2009 9:17 am

This year, I joined a baseball league - regular hardball. I will turn 35 in May. Most of the people are kids in the early 20's.

Anyway, we had our second game today and after slapping a smash single to right (translation - seeing eye two hopper) I led off first. Our next batter hit a grounder to shortstop. It had been about 17 years, since I slid, but I slid into 2B to break up the double play. As I trotted off the field, I noticed something else I had had in 17 years - a strawberry on my right knee.

My next at bat, I blooped one into RF and had another single. Now, I have to tell you, I turned and consider trying for two, but held up. I was out of breath! After a couple pitches, the 3B coach gave me the steal sign. Well, being close to 35 and out of breath, I tried to cheat a couple extra steps and got picked off (rundown).

On the way home, I couldn't help but think, "Wow, picked off! What could be worse than getting picked off???"

When I got home, I jumped in the shower and had my answer to what could be worse - as the water hit my scraped knee, I swear to God, I almost wanted to cry!

Thank God we only play on Sundays, because if we had a game tomorrow, I might have to pull a JD Drew and sit out due to injury!

Yeah but if you got paid a minimum of 250K or millions to play to play baseball I think you might be in better shape......

In the majors, I think only Bartolo Colon can say he hasn't slid in 17 years.

I played slo-pitch softball up until a couple of years ago and I was even prone to a slide now and then.

Looks like you'll have to break out the slip n slide for some practice. :D

I haven't been a slip and slide in a long time. I used to love that!

you could always bite the bullet and buy some sliding shorts to wear under your pants.

I remember Rickey loved sliding but admitted he didn't dive for balls in the outfield because he needed to save himself.
