Did I pay too much for Fred Lewis?

Post by Bullgod » Mon May 04, 2009 9:55 am

I know this question can't truly be answered succinctly without any doubt, but I'll just throw it out here. I'm in Chicago 3 and Lewis got dropped last week. I drafted C. Gomez (ouch) for OF speed and thought I'd be in the 150-160 SB range. With Carlos looking like a AAA player I thought I needed to do something. I spent 367 next bid was 288 so a numbers only look would tell you I "overspent" by $78. If you were in need of a certain player and he was out there this early in the year would you spend 36.7% of your FAAB...

I understand and appreciate if you don't want to say for fear of giving out your strategy. Just askin the question.

And if someone can tell Gomez now that your baby has come you better start hitting or you won't be able to afford formula on a AAA salary!

b4 draft day, i woulda paid ~$350-$400 for him. now, not so much. maybe $150-$200. his contact rate is horrible and doesn't want to hit leadoff. he certainly has the potential to be a $500 player, but so did gomez. :(

Lewis has been a HUGE disappointment!

I was expecting something in the neighborhood of .280, 10 HR, 80 R, 80 RBI, 25 SB hitting in the 3 hole (even in Frisco).

He hasn't done JACK! However he did go 2-3 yesterday!!!

Here's my opinion:

When the bidding is that high for certain player, spending $78 more than the second highest bid is not much of an overbid so I think you did a good job with your bidding. If you want someone and it fills a need, you definitely go for it. We were a little concerned with speed in our league and bid $316 on D Fowler in week 2 which was 140 over the next highest bid but we didn't want to miss our chance. Also, in our league, last week someone bid $670 on Pat Burrell. They were last in rbis and HRs (or close to it) but if I was in their situation, I would've done the same thing. Every situation is unique and it depends on other team needs, but would you want to miss out on Burrell and then be 125 rbis back of the top 4 teams by July?

Just my opinion, but smart bidding to get a player you believe in who will fill a hole on your team.

I appreciate your opinions and agree that maybe I reached a little but I forgot to tell you I also had X. Nady as an OF on my team so between those two I have a serious need for an OF who will get 500-600 AB's and should still be .280 80-15-60-15 hopefully. With the slim pickings beyond Lewis in the dump I thought it was go time! Thanks again for your opinions on this!

If it makes you feel better i overbidded on two players this week. Phil Hughes by $223, sad thing is i changed my bid amount from $100 to $300 the last minute, sucks cause the second highest bid was $77. Matt Laporta same thing i had him at $100, but then changed it to $250. $146 was the second highest bid, so if i didn;t change it i wouldn't of gotten him. My team is 3rd from last though in the online championship league im in so i thought take a risk, but now i only have $280 left. So basically im stuck with the team i have.

Rich, Chicago league 4 Just was wondering how much was the second highest bid for Burrell, cause actually i think that is way overpayment for him.

[/QUOTE]The runner up bid was 403... so yes it was quite an overbid. It's also tough to only have $300 left to spend for the next 5 months of the season. So many things happen EACH week of the season! One thing about the NFBC that makes it so fun is the FAAB strategy.
