I did agree strongly with you about how it is not the skill set that makes a closer, THE closer, but the oppurtunity and how the Manager perceives a closer. But we've talked about this before

If Maddon has stuck with Percival through his injuries and less than perfect skill set, it gives us every reason to believe that he will do the same with Izzy. Dan we usually agree on almost everything, but not here. I listened to it while I caught up on some stuff in the office Monday and enjoyed it. Mark is very knowledgeable and does not need a gimmick to make people listen and enjoy it.



On a serious note Mark did pretty much push me in to retirement from the nfbc yesterday. I see how much work he puts in and when you combine that with knowledge it makes me dead money ( I know there are more like him out there b/c I used to be that way too). My job and personal life has changed a lot in the last 5 years and I just do not have the passion like I used to. I am not going to retire Walla Walla style just yet. I have to assess whether with some harder work I would not have drafted Rollins, Papi, C Young, and Beltre or that I just stink. You make time for what you want to have time for.I have multiple jobs and an infant in the house.Just this past week I had to go 41 hours without sleep.Working most of those hours.While that is not my norm I still carry a very heavy schedule.I still think I am not in the realm of dead money.I do not see a year without NFBC.In my future.

Doughy – I believe we were kinda in agreement on the TB closer situation. Without listening to it again, I think we both said Izzy would get first crack. Jeff said it would be a committee approach due to Izzy’s “unhealthiness”. I didn’t say it, but it goes without saying that if Izzy bombs (like he did), someone else will get the gig. I’m not an Izzy fan. I’m just a fan because he was getting the first crack. Damn closers!



As for debating players and their fantasy impact, I’d be all for it. I’m not sure there would be a worthy adversary, as I usually have good data to back up whatever stance I take.



With that said, if the debate was against Rick Wilton and specific injuries, I’d probably get chewed up. I don’t specialize in injuries, Rick does.





Chest – Ya, the amount of time I spend is daunting. But, if I couldn’t commit that time, I wouldn’t play. I don’t half-ass anything. Don’t retire either. I still get run over in some leagues. For instance, the Sunday Super League. Got crushed last year. Getting crushed again this year. I’m still upset that I deviated from my plan when I selected Adrian Gonzalez in the 5th. The plan was supposed to be the same as my main event.

1 - Big bopper 1st baseman

2 – A.Ramirez

3 – McCann

4 – Best SP (Haren, then CBill)

5 – Best SP (Beckett)

6 – Best RP (usually Broxton, then Soria)

7 – T.Hunter



When I selected my closer, both Broxton and Soria were on the board. I had previously selected Broxton in the Friday Mixed Auction AND the Saturday Main Event. I didn’t want to be married into one closer (in case he gets injured) so I deviated and took Soria. I did that a couple more times with other players. Wanting to mitigate risk by selecting a little bit lesser player and not be married into one guy. Did the same thing with Beckett and got Lester instead. In hindsight, I should just trust the prep work I’ve done and select my best player available and damn “spreading the risk”.

For background:

I appeared on ESPN as a fantasy football participant. That was “taped” and “edited” for TV. Funny story about that was we were filming at the ESPN SportsZone at Baltimore Harbor. As the camera guys were prepping all the lights and camera, I heard that we were going live in about 20 seconds, then the head camera guy told me to “try not to look down because it shows me with a double chin”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How is that for a kick to the Jimmy right before going on the air?!?!? Needless to say, I think I slayed them on camera. Intelligence, humor, and a double chin!!! Eric Carabell graded out all of the guest participants teams and he said he liked mine the best on air. We played out the year, and my team did win the title.

Mark definitely brings a lot of insight / entertainment to the NFBC. I've told him this already, but I'll state it here for the record: he will be missed in football this season.

I spread the risk in the main event against all of my satellites(7) up to that point. Mistake for me as well.
