I saw Jason Marquis make Albert Pujols look merely average yesterday. When Albert is only average, the Cardinals are not a very good team.

I saw that somebody from Manny's entourage said he looked awesome in private workouts at Dodger Stadium. That means as much to me as Mrs. Obama saying what an awesome job her husband is doing as President.

I went to my grandson's little league game and was asked to umpire. I had to call him out on the bases three times. The last one was rather close. He jumps up from his slide and starts running towards me on his way back to the dugout. He says in a quiet voice for only me to hear, "Hey Papa, did you see that slide?!" I'm still smiling.

Good stuff! I was hoping for a Billy Martin-inspired dirt kicking episode, but this is much better.

I can't wait to enjoy my son's little league experiences. He's a year away from being old enough but is already a much better hitter than the vast majority of the kids. Our neighbors are well trained to toss all the baseballs back over the fence every morning.

We watch local games on weekends sometimes. Fielding is a little rough still but I'm hoping he turns into a force on the hot corner.

I just taught my 9 year old daughter how to slide properly. We spent a good 30 minutes one night in my front yard learning how to slide and pop back up. I left a few bare patches in the lawn.

Now, she slides every chance she gets in her games. She is the only one who does on her team. Last night she slid hard into 2nd, so I asked her if she liked to slide. With a big grin she said 'Oh yeah!".

Not a surprise at all he'd be voted KING by his peers!

Brian Fuentes has the most flaming windup/release in baseball.

He looks like right handed people look when they try to throw left handed!

...and yes, i lost money on the game tonight. :D

While trying to watch Bend'em get his first few hits...I thought the extreme homers who call the CHIW games would grow on me over time.

They didn't.

How unprofessional they sound...like a couple fans rooting for their team.

Fans don't cut it in broadcasting. They aren't bad...but it just sounds pathetic hearing "STRETCH" or "THE BAD GUYS" or "GET A HIT PAUL", or some other stupid drivel they spout during games. Eliminate that, or at least limit it a bit, and they'd be more tolerable.

It was worse in the past, Lance. Harrelson's partners would chime in and be just as much of a homer as he is.

At least now with Steve Stone, there is semblance of balance, and sometimes, some interesting unbiased commentary.

I was listening to Milo Hamilton doing radio for the Astros on my XM last night. I have heard good things about him but he is every bit as annoying as Harrelson. Maybe worse, at least when the Sox are not playing well, Harrelson becomes quiet, Hamilton whines.

If I want to hear someone be a homer, nobody does it better as a color guy than Ron Santo.

Santo is hilarious without trying to be. Sometimes the opposing team will be up, you'll hear the crack of the bat over the radio, and then hear Santo scream, "Oh no!!"

If looking for a glib broadcaster, Santo is not your man. But he does give you the feel of visiting Wrigley Field and sitting next to one of the long suffering Cubs fans.

I think Vin Scully is the only announcer that doesen't have a partner. No dead air and misses little. The guy is ageless.

For a team that has fun without detracting from the game, I like the Orsillo/Remy combo in Boston. They love what they do and it shows. Remy has almost a cult following.

Loved Harry Caray, liked Skip Caray, I can do without Chip Caray.

The list goes on and on, but I think most baseball's fans favorite is the one they grew up with. We can never go back to being a kid and hearing that beautiful voice came out of the radio telling us how our team was doing.

You are on the money with Scully Dan - he is without a doubt the best there is. He is so well prepared with anecdotes about every player who steps in the box or toes the rubber - that when you tune in you will get a nice little backstory on every player, relevant info at every junction and a play by play that actually reflects and adds to what you are seeing.

Tuning into late nite Dodger games alone is worth the price of the MLb package.

I also agree that the voices of your baseball youth will never be forgotten. I can still recall the sublime no nonsence work of the late Herb Score - who was the longtime voice of the Indians.

And when I moved to NY in '86, I was able to enjoy listening to Phil Rizzuto wax poetic about the Yanks, Mantle and Whitey and his wife Cora when you could still see the Yanks for free every night on WPIX.

My college nights were filled with catching Yankee games on an old TV in my dorm, moving the rabbit ears around to tune in the signal - fun stuff.

The beauty of the baseball broadcast-when done well- is that it is the perfect background "music" for a nice summer day or road trip.
