Alright, I touched on Beckham in another thread. However, I took another look at his minor league stats. Here’s my minor league statistician “scouting” report FOR THIS YEAR (and no I have never seen him play, nor will I…unless by accident):
*Most of his minor league stats have been compiled against tee-ball pitchers (A or AA)
*Currently 22 years old
*More recently, his strikeout rate in AA and AAA has been pretty good.
*Very little stolen base potential
*Zero walks in 28 AAA at bats
*Batting avg has looked good on the surface, but that can be a direct result of hitting against mostly tee-ball pitchers
*Appears to be more of a doubles hitter. Only 7 homeruns in 233 at bats against tee-ball pitchers. Should develop a bit more power than that in the next 2-3 years.
How does this translate to FAAB bidding on Friday night?
Good thing about Beckham is that we get a couple of games to evaluate him (if he plays everyday from now till Sunday). If I was weak at MI, RIGHT NOW ON THURSDAY, I’d place a decent bid on him. But, remember, good hitters in the minors typically get a small taste of the majors and then are either sent down or not used. Insert pics of laporta, gamel, etc…Also, will he play everyday is another question I currently have. I though Carlos Gomez would, but I got burnt on him.
FOR THIS YEAR, I have Jerry Harryston Jr graded out much higher than Beckham. If you didn’t bid on Harryston, you need to ask yourself, why you are bidding on Beckham.
My projections (IF Beckham plays everyday) for 2009:
6-7 homeruns
1-2 stolen bases
.265-.275 batting avg
runs and rbi’s are dependent on where he hits in the lineup
In any event, I can see some owners going into the 200’s or even 300’s plus on Beckham. I can also see an owner or two acquiring him for less than $50. As always,
Good luck and REVVVVVVVVVV UP the FAAB engines!!

I think the White Sox are rushing Beckham too much and won't be surprised at all if he struggles and ends up back in AAA in a month.
It also will be interesting to see where Beckham bats in the lineup. I'm guessing he bats 8th or ninth to start out.
Will the White Sox give him everyday playing time to start out...maybe??? You never know with Ozzie Guillen as a coach.

Haven't seen him play in the minors, but did see several of his college games (Go Dawgs!).
He is as ready as any college player I have ever seen. My analogy (always deadly as the worst thing a manager can do is label a player "the next Clemente" or something) or who he reminds me of a bit is Cal Ripken. Certainly not as big, but at 6'0" and 175 he is good sized. Hit every year of college ball and his power will develop I think as he hit 28 homeruns in 275 senior year AB for Georgia and has 23 doubles in 229 minor league AB's.
Too soon? Probably by a season. Expect the ups and downs. His manager is not exactly Mr. Patient, either, but if the ChiSox want to trade him to the Braves, I would welcome that as he would slide very nicely into Chipper's role soon.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

You're looking at an old media guide Wayne. He's listed at 190 now and looks like he can still put on a few more pounds. In time, he could develop into a good power-hitter.

I don't normally comment in these types of threads, and I won't give my opinion until Sunday night (although some of you have already seen it elsewhere......you do send out the magazines don't you Greg)
BUT a few facts amongst the manure are always good
Beckham
AFL - 18 games .394 BA with 3 HR; 0/1 SB; 10 of his 26 hits were for extra bases
2009 AA/AAA - 44 games .322 BA with 4 HR; and 2/2 SB; 27 of his 57 hits were for extra bases.

I read in the Chicago papers a couple weeks ago that the Sox put Beckham at 3B to get some experience. With the Sox lack of production at 2B and 3B, that was an obvious sign he was coming up soon. I picked him up cheap in the Chicago auction for $4 two weeks ago.
Now, we'll see if he can hit.

Where will Beckham be eligible at position wise? Don't see it listed on his player link.

Two cents to add...
Birmingham's home ballpark is one of the toughest homer parks in the entire minor leagues; Beckham had 1 HR there in 60 AB's vs. 3 in 87 AB's on the road. Ultra-small sample size caveats apply, but but he also had 5 more doubles on the road in those extra 27 at-bats, so it's fair to say he hit for more power on the road than at home.
Charlotte is a great home run park, but Beckham had only 9 AB's there and 28 overall, so 0 HR is not really telling at all, no more or less so than the six doubles in 28 AB's.
U.S. Cellular, on the other hand, is one of (if not THE) best home run parks not just in the AL but all of MLB. So while he'll be facing tougher pitcher in a weak part of the Sox lineup, he will be getting half his at-bats in a very favorable environment.
Spend those two cents freely.

Beckham will not be quite as large, but has good size for a shortstop (i.e. third base may end up his home for good).

why is it with these athletes that there is some timetaple they " should" or "should not" be up. age is a factor. guys that come right out of high school are just plain younger than the college guys. but this guy is 22. what i would look at is: is he going to play- yes. the other thing that gets factored in ( i am looking at you milwaukee brewers the home of " draft all dh's even though we play in the nl")is can he field his position. the sox feel he can. the thing no one knows- and know one will know- is can he hit major league pitching. you won't know that by 1-2-5-10 years in the minors. then- and it happens to everyone at some point- what happens when he slumps. the mental side comes in. baseball is a tough game mentally. hit .250 and you suck. hit .300 and you are a hitter. in 500 ab's that is 25 hits. lots of luck in there also. tough tough game to play- and the mental side at the major league level is the hard part. can you adjust. can you deal with the pressure. the white sox are in full sales mode. they lacked 2 starters, a center fielder , a 3rd basemen, and a second basemen to start the year- and they still do. they need some " hype". what have they got to lose? let him play and find out if he has it mentally and physically. fields is a guy- qb in college, great athlete, no reason to believe that he could not play at major league level. but he can't adjust. he looks completely lost. he wasn't brought up too early- he just can't handle it at this point. happens to lots of guys.

All I know is that he is probably worth $1 more than whatever you have left in FAAB Gekko - no matter how hard you try to drive his price down

if he's 0-12 or 1-12 entering the FAAB deadline, i won't be surprised if he's not even picked up in some leagues. kid is overmatched at this level, this year. folks, you don't want to WASTE a lot of your precious FAAB on this kind of production do you?

Beckham has brought the "Bend it like Beckham" soccer attitude to the White Sox.
In both games he has started, the Sox have scored nil.
