No matter what, every year at this time, somebody is left off the All-Star game roster that should have been there. :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I won't miss ARod or Manny at the game.

Milton Bradley has ATTEMPTED zero stolen bases this year. All that attitude and lazy too.

Joe Mauer had 11 home runs in May, three in June.

Mauer is hitting. 442 at home.

It has been six years since the Oakland A's have sent a positional player to the All-Star Game.

The last positional player for the A's to go to the All Star Game was Ramon Hernandez.

The Yanks and the BoSox have had a lock on most of the AL All-Star spots so you almost have to have a Ruthian breakthrough to make it. Toss in an Ichiro, a Vladdy and there are just not that many spots.

A-Rod 3B Five of the last six years

Jeter SS Five of the last six years

NYY or BoSox 1B six of the last six years

Ichiro OF five of the last six years

Vladdy OF five of the last six years

Pedroia 2B last two years

Also, Oakland has been a winning team with a bunch of pretty average ballplayers. Who should have made the All-Star team over the last six years? Eric Chavez, Mark Ellis, Bobby Crosby, Nick Swisher, Mark Kotsay, Jason Kendall, Bobby Kielty, Travis Buck, Jack Cust? A lot of turnover in the Oakland team, especially in the OF, at Catcher, and 1B. The players have moved on, but not proven much better (Kendall, Swisher). They did have Dye in 2004 (not his best year) and Holliday this year (not his best year), but other than that?

Why look at all these examples of random players to try and figure park effects? You can do it very easily using by using data in the Bill James Handbook.

Playing half their games in the coliseum decreased player home runs by 7.5% and batting average by .0075 points. I don't think hitting 28 home runs instead of 30 or .285 instead of .292 is really making the difference here. Still, you measure that against an easier ballpark and you are talking about a difference of 4 homers and .015 in batting average between similar players.

In any event, economics and parks play as much of a role in who gets voted in as actual ability does. Didn't Josh Hamilton just get voted in? Was it the .263 batting average or the six home runs that really swayed the voters?

here is a listing of starting pitchers in my league that had at least one start in the last 30 days. from my quick count, it looks like ~41% are rookies (and i even included 30 year old Burns and 34 year old Uehara to help pad your #'s). I'm not sure how you can play in this league every year and not know that the % is NO WHERE NEAR 95%!!!

Thanks for finally giving some evidence to support a claim. It feels good to do something new, doesn't it? Yes, you're right. Hopefully my post will teach the kiddies out there about the dangers of sample size. Probably my mistake is due to completely discarding the names of players I know, i.e. there's Eric Milton...he sucks...next. And then spending most of my time researching the guys I've never heard of, leading me to believe there have been more of them.

i just hope some red sox fan starts filming jeter around second base on all the double plays the rest of the year. i say it will take about 2 weeks to find a time where he isn't even close to touching second with the ball in his hands.

On National tv a couple of weeks ago, FOX miked up the 2nd base umpire.

In that game, Scott Podsednik attempted to steal second base. He would have been safe, but his momentum carried him off the bag and he was called out. He stood up and asked the umpire, "You're going to call that??"

The umpire replied, "What do you want me to do, Scotty, ignore it?"

It is what we ask of any umpire.

Do not ignore the area calls, we want their foot on the bag.

We don't care if the ball beats the runner, if tagging the player after his foot is on the bag, call him safe.

Umpires shouldn't be half-assed. Foster has gotten himself in two or three jams the last two weeks for doing a half-assed job. While his crew chief, Hirshbeck, has protected him, I am hoping other superiors are taking notice of his poor job as of late.

Jeter and every player will do whatever the umpires let them get away with.
