Two or three weeks ago, Nick Johnson and Aubrey Huff were considered gone from Baltimore and Washington. Surely, a team with more money would be taking these guys off their hands.
But something has happened to the teams that have money. Maybe it's the economy, maybe it's less people going through the gates. Whatever it is, the teams with money seemed to have wised up.
Why should they pay an aging Huff his 8 million salary for underproducing? Should they pay Johnson's 5.5 million and wait for his pane of glass body to be a pain in the ass body on their payroll?
Lets turn our attention to the two teams with the most money to spend. The Red Sox chose Adam LaRoche to be their insurance policy in case Mike Lowell's hip can't make it down the stretch. It's not enough.
The Yankees drove a dagger through Red Sox Nation when they signed Mark Teixeira. Turning the tables, the Yankees playing Swisher at 1b, while the Red Sox playing Teixeira most likely would have the Red Sox in first place. The Red Sox have to bolster themselves offensively. Their hand has been forced and LaRoche, Johnson, and Huff are like Kia's in a Corvette showroom. The Red Sox need a Victor Martinez or Adrian Gonlalez. Ownership knows both players can be had. It's a matter of giving away the right prospects and using cash to appease Cleveland or San Diego. Gonzalez, in particular, would be a great player for the Red Sox. Ellsbury, Drew, and Ortiz have provided little left handed pop for the Sox this year. Gonzalez has a great Fenway swing and with major league hitters again surrounding him in a lineup, his numbers could go Gonzo.
The C.C. and A.J. signings are deals that will haunt the Yankees in future years, but they are getting bang for their buck this year and the Teixeira signing puts them ahead of the Red Sox offensively.
The Yankees won the free agent battle. The Red Sox, with arguably the best management in baseball have four days to even the score. And there it is. The Red Sox have now made the deal to put themselves on par with the Yankees offense. Without giving up Buchholz or Bard. A great deal.
Now, I'm wondering if the Yankees will counterpunch with a good starter or another closer that they can use from the bullpen.
Good stuff.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

No sense keeping LaRoche's 7 million dollar contract, taking Kotchman in return was probably the most the Braves (or anybody) was offering.

Peavy to the White Sox for Richard, Poreda and two others is interesting.
He must have changed his mind about staying in San Diego over Chicago.

Tek is really banged up. V-Mart will be behind the plate a few times a week. Kotchman will not get much PT but should come is as a defensive sub when VMart is at 1st.

Maybe they flipped Krotchman to Washington (since they traded Johnson to Florida) and haven't reported it yet?

I just hope he doesn't become disgruntled this season on the bench.

I know that some gm's simply will not deal with JP Ricciardi. I would guess that Ricciardi and the Jays would have loved to get the package of players that the White Sox gave to the Padres for Peavy.
Williams has stated that he has bugged Kevin Towers and the Padres since last July in trying to obtain Peavy.
Maybe Williams manlove was the overriding factor for the White Sox giving up great prospects to get Peavy.
Maybe Williams didn't want to deal with Ricciardi.
Meanwhile, Toronto ownership has to be saying, 'Why didn't get that type of deal for Halladay?' If it is because it's another case of another team not wanting to deal with Ricciardi, Toronto ownership really should be thinking about firing him.

[/QUOTE]i agree dude has to go. first it was ryan for a mega contract.. nope that didnt work. then it was wells... nope again. then it was rios... wrong. hey lets get burnett... nope.. brutal until he was smelling free agency.
what has he done right there? im sure that there has to be something.. but im also sure that he's had other bonehead moves (beside millar at dh) that im forgetting.
as a red sox fan.. i want him to stay up north. as a baseball fan i dont understand how he or the cincy gm can have jobs. i just cant grasp how getting rolen upgrades that team. is it for next season? so maybe thats a good move for riccardi?

Chance favors the prepared mind.
