Feedback on Fantasy Sports Magazine (Dec.)

Post by Philly Phantom » Mon Dec 28, 2009 6:27 am

So here are the pros and cons of the first Fantasy Sports Magazine as I see it. Please feel free to add your thoughts on what you liked and didn't like.

Pros

1. Being able to get a baseball magazine before Christmas! I don't take much of a break after the season so having some holiday reading was great.

2. Undervalued/Overvalued - I hope there are more of these in the upcoming mags.

3. I thought the AFL review was a nice touch. You often don't see that in other magazines but I thought it fit well here because this mag is coming out so early and is actually close to the AFL.

4. Hints and Tips from the Moneymakers - I thought it was interesting to hear their thoughts on strategy though some were definitely more helpful than others.

5. Strategy Articles on both auction and straight draft format. I thought these were informative and had some good pointers. I liked how you had well regarded NFBC participants write these articles.

Cons

1. Money Makers Article - I really didn't find it interesting to learn that participant A finished 13th and 39th in the Diamond Challenge and finished the Internet Challenge in 7th. This seemed like filler.

2. Lindy Article - I really liked the writeup and the personal touch of learning about his background but I would have liked to see an extension of the article where we were able to see his draft. I think that would have been interesting to seeing instead of just putting the pieces together based on his comments.

3. More post mock analysis - I would have really enjoyed seeing how each team felt after the mock. You had some of this but I thought a comment from each participant would have been helpful. What was their goal going in and were they able to successfully implement that idea.

4. NFBC Article on pg. 45 - I know you need to advertise but I thought this article was a little long and also seemed like filler.

Overall, I thought this was a wonderful way to start the projection season. I give the mag a B+. Thanks to all who worked on it!
Looking forward to my first NFBC season in 2010.

Philly, I agree with all your points. I would add a few small things:

Additional Pros:

1. Yahoo on the high quality paper stock, you can't overestimate how this now makes the NFBC feel world class vs. the old paper stock

2. Great to see Mock 15 team drafts. 99% of competitors only have 12 team drafts

Things to look at:

1. I 110% agree with Philly that it is great to see top 10 prospects and AFL but it would be even better with more on prospects and the AFL! Tommmy Hanson was just one reason why people should be hearing about the AFL more. How could the writer not have more to comment on Grant Desme?

2. Each sections (1b, 2b etc...) all start with a pretty standard sure bets, etc... but then there isn't a summary chart of the 2010 projections and rankings. Check out how Sporting News does it. You go right into the profiles then there is a 2009 summary at the end. Feels odd.

3. # of Profiles. I am hopeing that the # of 600 was because you were working hard to get out fast. Many competitors are doing 700 to 850.

4. I don't see any AL/NL specific league breakout or draft values? I am not into this format but there are a lot of people that are

5. 1st half/2nd half stat break outs would be great

Again, overall a HUGE IMPROVEMENT and very exciting to see people that I regularly compete with in Print!!!!

We always had a graph of the past champions' draft picks in that article and we should have done that this time, too. A lot of folks see those winning drafts and go "damn, I can draft that good!!" But it's the in-season management PLUS the draft that forms a winning $100,000 team, right?

Here is Lindy's winning draft, just so you know:

Lindy drafted 4th in LV 8. Here is his draft:

1. Albert Pujols

2. Matt Kemp

3. Alex Rios

4. Troy Tulowitzki

5. Chad Billingsley

6. Torii Hunter

7. Kerry Wood

8. Derrek Lee

9. Josh Johnson

10. Alex Gordon

11. Justin Verlander

12. Clayton Kershaw

13. Huston Street

14. Denard Span

15. Mike Napoli

16. Pat Burrell

17. Alexi Casilla

18. Billy Butler

19. Jonathan Sanchez

20. Jordan Zimmerman

21. Clint Barmes

22. Ian Snell

23. Clay Buchholz

24. Rafael Soriano

25. Carlos Villanueva

26. Andy LaRoche

27. Rod Barajas

28. Travis Buck

29. Miguel Batista

30. Brian Schneider

Spyhunter Chris, the Fanball.com Annual is due to hit newsstands in about three weeks and has 196 pages and I think 850 player profiles. Check out that issue if you didn't think we reviewed enough players.

AL and NL dollar values are tough to do in November, but will be coming soon.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked the new look.

Greg,

I think if you could add the K/9 and BB/9 would be a great touch for the pitchers.
