Greinke and the Royals
Zack Greinke was the best pitcher in baseball last year. I know that a case can be made for Lincecum and other pitchers, but, in my mind, small as it might be, Greinke was the best pitcher in baseball.
Unfortunatly, Greinke's biggest nemesis watches him from the owners box.
When Greinke looks around the field at his teammates on opening day, he may see:
Billy Butler at 1b
(nobody wants to see Billy Butler at 1b)
Chris Getz at 2b
( who?)
Josh Fields at 3b
(Takes his strikeouts to the field with him... and he strikes out a lot)
Yuni Betancourt at shortstop
(Possibly the worst defensive shortstop in baseball....I didn't say Major League Baseball)
An outfield of Guillen, DeJesus, and Podsednik (DeJesus can still catch the ball, Guillen can still throw the ball, Podsednik can... uh... steal bases
Jason Kendall catching (He's old, when you're an old catcher, it's automatic that you know how to handle a staff)
With Kendall, Betancourt, Getz, and Podsednik, Dayton Moore (the guy in the owners box), may have come up with the worst middle of the field, both offensively and defensively in baseball memory.
It is conceivable that Greinke can pitch as well as last year and end up with 12/13 wins. Certainly not worthy of another Cy Young.
Fantasy-wise, Greinke takes a hit as well, in a recent slo-draft, I picked Greinke at 4-4 and STILL had reservations about taking him. His peripherals should be great, again, but how long can a guy be great with incapable players surrounding him?
As a Royals fan (you inglorious bastards), I would call up the ticket office and ask if every fifth day season tickets are available.

i dont see how 4-5 wins should lessen his draft slot so much. if he is the best sp in baseball(other than seabass) there is now way he should have gone as late as 4.4. nice snag doughy. give me grienke in the 3rd and i will draft him every time. i am all about value and he screams value!!! but what do i know the last 2 years my sleepers(not that greinke is a sleeper) were conner jackson and hermida. i took grienke the othernight @ 2.9..... so i am not whistling dixie!!!

OK....so you grab Greinke in late 2, early 3....who are you finding later that will make up for those wins and not cripple your offense?

As a Royals fan (you inglorious bastards), I would call up the ticket office and ask if every fifth day season tickets are available. Why isnt Alex Gordon not playing 3rd base as he is a good fielder.Callaspo had a pretty good season hitting 300 in 576 at bats i cant see him losing the 2nd base job these two are much better than Getz and Fields.
An infield of Butler, Gordon,Callaspo, and Bettancourt seem much better. Now if getz could play short than that would help.Im also a Grienke fan and this infield doesnt change a thing about drafting him too me.I just took him at 3rd round pick 1 in the Childs league.

Eddie, true, it could be Callaspo and Gordon. Rumors are that Moore is trying to peddle Callaspo. I would guess the Royals get back a bag of beans in that deal.
Gordon and Fields will be switching off with 3b and dh duties, so it could very well be Gordon on the field, we don't know.
The problem still remains. Greinke is ticketed for less wins, no matter how well he pitches. A choice has to be made whether we want a three category pitcher or a four category pitcher.
It's a tough decision, especially for players that believe in Greinke's abilities.
Since the football playoffs started and the regular season just got over, I'll use a comparison with Steven Jackson. Jackson stands shoulders above his teammates, as does Greinke, but how long can they play up to their standards surrounded by inadequcies?
Greinke is not simply a second, third, or even fourth round choice. He is a guy, who if drafted, changes a draft strategy, no matter where drafted.

Greinke's ratios are better than your typical 3rd/4th round guy so you hopefully make up for the lost 5 wins in ratios so it turns out to be a wash.
Then maybe you get lucky with wins and don't lose out there.
Or you use his ratios as a foundation to roster a lesser pitcher from a "better team" in an attempt to chase wins and hope the ratios balance each other out.

F-ing hilarious!! now the royals ink another OF in Rick Ankiel. What do they have about 5 or 6 average at best OF's there now?
how does their GM still have a job? And after moves like this on a regular basis how do they have ANY fans??!!!
i thought i was pissed about the moves the sox made this offseason, but the royals moves have been so bad im ready to throw up.

Look at it from Ankiel's perspective though,
He immediately becomes one of the best hitters on a team, and probably one of the best pitchers.
He can't get that any place else.
