NFBC Rookie Invitational Satellite League- League is Full!!!
Hello everyone - if you are reading this welcome to the sign-up thread for a unique Sat league for this season. I pitched Greg on the idea of letting me run a Rookie Invitational this season - and he has graciously given me the green light to take sign-ups for this experimental league.
The concept is this - take 10 NFBC Rookies (to qualify as a Rookie - you can never have played in the Main Event or any of the Premier Events.) and put them together in a league with a couple competitive, yet helpful, NFBC veterans and let them battle it out for a spot in next year's Main Event.
Along the way, rookie participants will be able to interact with their veteran counterparts weekly via "chats" (following each weeks FAAB results) as well as daily in a thread in a League Forum which will hopefully lead to a season-long discussion about what it takes to compete and succeed in the NFBC's unique 15 team format.
This league will run just like any other NFBC league with one exception. While we will not be changing the IP minimums, in the interest of "training" new players to play in the NFBC we will require each owner to leave the draft with at least 6 Starting Pitchers. You can draft them in any rounds you choose and once the season starts you will be free to manage your team however you like.
The date for this draft is set for the weekend of March 13/14 - the exact day and time will be determined at a later date by the participants.
If you are a rookie who is interested sign-up below with your real name in the body of your response. Once we have the league filled Greg and/or Tom will let you know how to officially register.
Any veterans who may have interest - please PM me so I can discuss your participation. I will need at least a couple dedicated guys who can take turns joining me for the weekly chats and who have a desire to do something like this. This could be a fun league for any veteran who will not be playing in the Main Event this season, for whatever reason. The interaction will hopefully help feed your fantasy hunger all season long.

I joined the NFBC family in 2008 with a pair of $125 Satellite drafts. I was improbably successful in my first venture - winning one league and finishing 3rd in the other (to Bobby Jurney by the way). This led to a trip to last year’s Main Event and the excitement of participating in the premier fantasy event in the country. I finished 125th in the Main last year and 3rd in my league, so I had a decent year. I knew that I could have done better though. I learned that if I was ever going to beat the best – I had to learn from my mistakes and grow as a player.
The idea for this league came from my own experiences as a “newbie” here and a desire to add something extra to the league experience. There is a great spirit of competition and camaraderie between long-time participants in the NFBC. However, in individual leagues, this isn’t always the case for new players.
If you are thinking about playing in a NFBC league for the first time – don’t be fooled. There is a learning curve involved. The new Friday substitution rule is bringing an entirely new wrinkle to the game this year that many haven’t even begun to consider yet. You can be sure that the best players here likely already are developing strategies for this new rule.
Hopefully we can have a fun time competing and learn a little along the way.

Ryan....this is a pretty cool idea.
I probably could have used a league like this last year, my first.
How about a Sophomore Invitational?

Glenn - I have 4 spots for vets - and I like you only played in the Main once. So I have as much to learn as the "Rookies".

Jim Foxx - aka Double XX is the first rookie owner to sign up. I already drafted once this year with Jim in a slow draft - so I guess he wants another piece of me. Welcome aboard Jim - and thanks for getting the ball rolling.

I had a great time in that slow draft with everyone and I love this idea. Why not give it a shot.
I would love to see SACK or Oaktown or some other CDM DC vets in this, a good group of guys with lots O experience and info to share.

Okay - we've had some nice PM's from people about this league and we've gotten our first commitment from a Veteran player.
Rookies, trust me, this league just got a WHOLE lot more interesting with this player's involvement.
He's one of the most respected voices on our boards and in the industry and will lend his knowledge and expertise to our weekly chats and discussions. I need to speak with him personally before I unveil his name but I feel very fortunate to have his help with this league. Stay tuned .....

There are plenty of other great players who prefer to stay out of the limelight as well.

By "best" I'm referring to consistently high performance of course....not how often or how loud you talk. While I would consider myself lucky to have any of these players involved in this project- the reality is that they are all already spread pretty thin during the season.
As I said before -this makes a great league for a veteran who has previuosly competed in the ME - but won't be this year for whatever reason.A desire to talk strategy, etc. Is a plus.
The veteran who has signed on did so in part because he WASN'T playing in the Main Event this year (yes a clue) and felt it would allow him to be more open and candid with his advice and opinions.
And while I would love to have another veteran or two jump in - we could go with 13 "rookies" if need be.
So while I appreciate your enthusiasm - you have to understand that the mission of this league likely doesn't make sense for an owner competing in the overall - where you need to keep some cards close to the vest in season.
That said - if we are able to generate some interesting discussions along the way - I'm sure you'll find plenty of the best players dropping in to add their two cents. Opinion is something never in short supply here.

However, I felt that handling the weekly FAAB is a big part of the challenge. It also provides us a logical time every week (after FAAB gets processed) to get the league together and talk about what went right/wrong for the week.

Okay - I am happy to announce the addition of Mike Ladd as one of the veterans who will be playing with us this year in the Rookie Invitational. Mike has played in the Main Event three times, as well as many Satellite drafts. For anyone who has ventured over to the Mastersball.com message boards, you may know him as Viper. If you have ever posted a question over there, chances are you got a reply from Mike.
Like myself Mike's not playing in the Main Event this season, so I personally invited him to join this league. I know he will bring to the table the desire and ability to talk strategy and answer your questions along the way. He's also going to be trying hard to beat you all - since he's still searching for his first NFBC league title!
Welcome aboard Mike!

One more question, what is the entry fee? I didn't see it in your earlier messages but I might have missed it.
NFBC Rookie Invitational Satellite League- League is Full!!!
It's a $125 Winner Take All League - so $1300 or a Free Entry to next year's Main Event for the winner.
$200 for second place. Once the league is filled then Greg/Tom will set up a registration link for participants to register officially.
Go to the first post on the thread for other info - when you are ready to join, list your real name in this thread saying so.
