Slow Draft Etiquette

Post by KJ Duke » Mon Feb 22, 2010 3:17 pm

Slow drafts require a spirit of cooperation among the drafters. Anyone who doesn't have that spirit, or doesnt want to communicate with others, shouldn't be involved. You cannot finish a 45-rd slow draft in a reasonable time frame without it.

If 1-2 players are not holding up their end of the bargain, a draft still can finish in a reasonable amount of time, but the other 13-14 players will be frustrated and feel that they (and their time) are being taken advantage of. Which IS the case, since the draft could not finish if everyone drafted like the 1-2 that don't really want to cooperate. Not saying that was the situation here, just framing the discussion.

The solution is for everyone to understand expectations going in for that particular draft. Think of it as a 1-2 week social experience - and if you don't want to commit to that, don't. If even one player wants/expects a much faster or much slower draft, it can ruin the experience.

I think there should be two general types of drafts:

1) Slow Drafts, for players who agree to communication.

2) Slowwwwwwwww Drafts, for players who don't want to be bothered or asked to pick in a timely manner.

Sign-up for the one that fits your needs and no one will feel taken advantage of or alternatively harassed, whichever the case.

Thirty three cents per month over the last 20 years to keep an unlisted number...PRICELESS!!!

Can't find me on "reverse white pages" lookups..and no annoying phone solicitation. When the phone rings...it's family/friends 99.9% of the time.

Side note...45 picks x 15 teams @ 12 hours each = 8100 hours = 337 and a half days!!!

Bobby though I'm sympathetic to what you're saying, I believe you've misinterpreted the reason the 12-hour time frame was put into place for slow drats. It was not put in place so that everyone could actually take 12 hours per pick if they so choose. It was put in place to cover the overnight sleeping hours.

I completely agree with Nelson's point that if you enter a slow draft, you should do so with a flexible schedule. It's inconsiderate to the other drafters to keep them waiting hours on end.

The best slow draft I've ever been a part of was the one Shawn referred to where those who registered were expected to help make this specific slow draft move at a more rapid pace than typical. Contact info was given out, everyone stayed in touch and kept up to date on draft status, and therefore this draft was interesting, informative, and complete within a reasonable time frame. No specific pick was rushed (thus the name slow draft) but people were expected to get their picks in.

I've noticed that slow drafts are much better, more enjoyable, and move at a much better pace if experienced drafters are involved. They seem to be more understanding of each other's needs to make a pick. It takes an addict to know an addict ;)

Will I take my 12 hours? Not if I can help it. If things play out right, I never take more than 5 minutes to make a pick because I can time the turns. I will say that I consider it a courtesy to let the league know when I'll be available or not. That way when I'm not going to be around, they don't have to sit and wait for the immortal words...."NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!"

What do you say to time zones? Any idea how many time zones Hawaii is from the mainland?

Slow drafts are just that....slow. The very nature allows people with differing schedules, access, plans, lives to stay involved in the contest. Slow drafts by their nature are convenient to me. [/QB][/quote]

I don't need to deal with it. I already said that Slow drafts are not my cup of tea when you have Christopher Columbus (madcow sez) "exploring" every time it's his pick.

I've done two slow drafts the last two years.

Had the same problem with no access to a cell phone and no computer contact. I won't do another one. Geeko blasted me this year because I wasn't fast enough to pick. Than blasted me for being on auto. Which brings up a point about the ADP's. I wouldn't count on them with so many auto draft's that have probably happened during slow drafts.

I might add that I actually do think it was overboard to google the guy and call his house. It's one thing to call a number left by a league owner, another to take it further by becoming a private-eye.

I was the person who called Bobby's house. I left a telephone message, was very polite, and simply said the clock had started and he had twelve hours to make the pick.

I have already sent Bobby an apology and told him it will not happen again. In light of the reaction from the board, I acknowledge that I made a mistake. Still learning slow draft etiquette.

Yesterday, we, as a group, had tried to get everyone's contact information. We did not have anything for Bobby. Earlier today, he told us that he likely would be at work from approximately 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. EST. Since his pick likely would come due right at the end of his shift, and because he mentioned he could not be contacted at work, I googled him and found his home number. I was just trying to give him a heads up...I didn't realize that a telephone message would be so upsetting to him and his wife. The message was left at around 7:15 p.m. EST, about the same time as solicitors call houses.

People who have spoken with me in drafts or through the message board know I am a jovial, straight shooting guy who is the first to call myself out for something which may be viewed as inappropriate. That is what I am doing here.

My name is Kevin Park, and I am an attorney in Phoenix, AZ. If you think I deserve it, feel free to berate me for what I did.

Finally, it figures Mark Srebro comes out and wants me treated like a pariah. Given his constant harassment to just about everybody on this board, I find his reaction richly ironic. Pot calling the kettle black, huh Gekko.

Again, my apologies to Bobby and his wife. Also, I wish to apologize to Greg and Tom for any unnecessary consternation I caused with my action. I very much appreciate and enjoy NFBC and NFFC and the efforts of those gentlemen.

b) Auto drafting is not using MDC's list, but rather exactly what you would have picked had you been logged on. (so I don't see the big deal re: ADP's)

c) ADP's make you weak. Ignore them and draft the way you enjoy...you'll only wind up keeping roughly 1/3rd of your drafted team anyway...may as well enjoy the draft!

I am obviously too impatient for slow drafts. As you aptly stated, live and learn.

The only one that could pick up would be a family member of mine? So it was obvious you intended to speak with a family member to get my contact information or let them know I was up in the draft. If that is not harassment, I don't know what it is.

We all receive emails of the picks that are made, there should be no reason to inform me I had 12 hours to make my pick. I was well aware of the time frame.

I already accepted your apology in private, but don't make it sound like my wife and I over-reacted to the situation.

Either way, the issue is behind us and apology accepted.

Greg may want to seriously rethink how slow drafts work based on this thread. I'm in one right now. It's my first experience with NFBC, and from my point of view it's been going well so far (in the 7th round right now). That said, if I had read this thread before I signed up, I probably would have skipped it. I've made my most of my picks quickly, putting myself on auto when I had a good idea of who I wanted and whether they'd be available. But when I signed up, I did so assuming that if I wanted 12 hours for a pick I had it. The idea that there are going to be 14 pissed off guys who may berate me if I'm out all day without internet access (as I will be on Thursday and Friday this week) isnt very appealing, and is going to be a good way to make new players have an unpleasant initial NFBC experience. If there are expectations about providing contact information (which I've done), making rapid picks, etc. those should be communicated to people before they register. The best solution would probably be to have two types of slow drafts, as a number of people have said.

Also, this thread probably would have been more useful if it simple stated the stuff that all experienced slow drafters should know, but isn't obvious to beginners. For example:

1. If you're willing to provide contact info to your leaguemates, do.

2. If your only avoiding auto pick because you're afraid your 2nd pick will come up, get someone who drafts before your next pick to agree to wait until you return and turn auto off.

3. Do not leave yourself logged in to the draft room if you aren't around to make a pick within a few minutes.

4. Do not talk about players who haven't been picked yet.

I did one of the early slow drafts this year. Although I first participated in the NFBC in 2005, it was only my 2nd one. I frequently left the computer on when I was away. I did not realize that it would make the other drafters think that I was there and thought many others would do the same. So I want to apologize to my leaguemates, after the fact. Most of my picks were pretty quick however.

I did the KJ Duke league last year and KJ called me numerous times on my cell when I was away in Atlantic City. I think something like that is the way to go for the slow drafts. Maybe give 1 leaguemate a contact # and hope that speeds things up. If you are out of contact for 12 consecutive hours on a normal basis, others will not be happy, even in a slow draft format.

Lots of crying on this thread. Life is tough and complicated ever since slow drafts were introduced...

For what it's worth, I couldn't rat Kevin out either. I was afraid his father would hunt me down and kill me. And, yes, according to my wife, he was very polite on the phone.

Thanks for the post...seems reasonable
